Nuclei of the human raphe
2012
Okajimas Folia Anatomica Japonica
Researches on the raphe nuclei has been reported in experimental animals since the early 1900s 5) . However, in the human brainstem, such group nuclei have not yet been studied precisely. We made serial sections of the human brainstem and cerebellum to present precise findings of the raphe group nuclei. Material and Methods We used the brain stem and cerebellum from a 63-yearold Japanese female cadaver. The cause of death had no direct or indirect connection with the central or peripheral

... s system, and no gross pathological alterations were observed. We injected 12% formaldehyde solution into the femoral artery prior to removing the whole brain the next day. After further fixation in 3.7% formaldehyde solution for one week, we cut the brainstem and cerebellum as one block, and immersed the block into secondary chromic acid fixative 6) for two weeks at room temperature. Then we renewed the fixative to continue the immersion another week at 37°C in an incubator. The block was washed using a pipette washer with siphon mechanism, and was dehydrated in a series of graded alcohol and followed by embedding in celloidine (nitrocellulose). The celloidine block was sliced at 40 μm thickness to make complete serial transverse sections. Then we stained every 5th section alternatively with Kultschitzky and K-B methods. Details of the staining methods have been given in previous reports 6) . Results According to our careful observations of the serial brainstem sections, the following groups of raphe nuclei can be recognized: (1) nucleus linealis oralis, (2) nucleus linealis intermedius, (3) nucleus raphe medialis, (4) nucleus supratrochlealis (or nucleus raphe dorsalis), (5) nucleus raphe pontis, (6) nucleus centralis superior medialis, (7) nucleus centralis superior dorsalis, (8) nucleus raphe magnus, (9) nucleus raphe pallidus, (10) nucleus raphe obscurus intraraphalis, and (11) nucleus raphe obscurus extraraphalis. Locations of the Nuclei and Neuronal Findings Precise nuclear locations and their neuronal findings are described below. Summary: Along the raphe of the brain stem, a series of small neuronal groups can be observed in the medulla oblongata, the pons and the mesencephalon. The neurons located in and adjacent to the raphe are considered to produce mainly serotonin (5-HT). The groups of nuclei containing 5-HT were first reported in experimental animals in the early 1960s 1) . The presence of such nuclei, however, has not yet been brought to light in the human brainstem except the few atlases 2,3) , although in several neuroanatomy textbooks 4) , extrapolated data are shown in the form of drawings as if they were the data from the human brain. The aim of this study is to present microscopic photos of such raphe nuclei made from serial sections of the human brainstem, and to clarify the differences between findings in human and textbook drawings from animal data.

Rheumatoid Arthritis Accompanying Diffuse Panbronchiolitis
2021
Internal medicine (Tokyo. 1992)
A 58-year-old woman with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) visited our hospital complaining of a persistent cough and sputum for the past year. She had a high cold hemagglutinin titer and chronic sinusitis. Chest computed tomography revealed bilateral diffuse centrilobular nodules, bronchiectasis, and bronchial wall thickening. A surgical lung biopsy was performed that confirmed diffuse panbronchiolitis (DPB) because of the lymphocytic and plasmacytic infiltrates in the respiratory bronchioles. Her

Characterization of pulsed discharge plasma at atmospheric pressure
2007
Surface & Coatings Technology
Experiments are performed to improve a pulsed corona discharge system for methane destruction at atmospheric pressure. The corona discharge is energized by 6-12 µs wide voltage pulses (0.3-7 kV) at a repetition frequency of 1.050 kHz. The characteristic of methane destruction is observed by a mass spectrometer. We have found that methane destruction depends on the parameters such as: pulse width, input pulse voltage, repetition frequency, discharge current and discharge time. The effects of

Development of a mouse nerve-transfer model for brachial plexus injury
2019
Biomedical research
Nerve transfer involves the use of a portion of a healthy nerve to repair an injured nerve, and the process has been used to alleviate traumatic brachial plexus injuries in humans. Study of the neural mechanisms that occur during nerve transfer, however, requires the establishment of reliable experimental models. In this study, we developed an ulnar-musculocutaneous nerve-transfer model wherein the biceps muscle of a mouse was re-innervated using a donor ulnar nerve. Similar muscle action

... ials were detected in both the end-to-end suture of the transected nerve (correctrepair) group and the ulnar-musculocutaneous nerve-transfer group. Also, re-innervated acetylcholine receptor (AChR) clusters and muscle spindles were observed in both procedures. There were fewer re-innervated AChR clusters in the nerve transfer group than in the correct repair group at 4 weeks, but the numbers were equal at 24 weeks following surgery. Thus, our ulnar-musculocutaneous nerve-transfer model allowed physiological and morphological evaluation for re-innervation process in mice and revealed the delay of this process during nerve transfer procedure. This model will provide great opportunities to study regeneration, re-innervation, and functional recovery induced via nerve transfer procedures.
Isolation of a new polyether antibiotic, lonomycin
1976
Journal of antibiotics (Tokyo. 1968)
A new polyether antibiotic, lonomycin, was isolated from the culture of Streptomyces ribosidificus strain TM-481. The antibiotic obtained as a sodium salt is a colorless prism having a molecular formula of C44H75O14Na(M.W. 850), m.p. 188.189°C, and has no absorption maxima in the ultraviolet region. The infrared and NMR spectra of the antibiotic suggest the presence of a carboxyl and four methoxyl groups. Lonomycin shows antimicrobial activity against gram-positive bacteria.

Morphometric Comparison of Human Nerve Cells: Pyramidal Motor System
2005
Okajimas Folia Anatomica Japonica
We compared morphological and morphometric data on various motor neurons in the human pyramidal system using the modified Klü ver-Barrera staining method with extremely minimized shrinkage ratio and an imageanalyzer. We classified motor neurons in the human pyramidal system into three groups according to the measurement data. This report may be of interest to better understand the process of nerve conduction in the human pyramidal system.
