Facile Synthesis of Propranolol and Novel Derivatives

Propranolol is one of the first medications of the beta-blocker used for antihypertensive drugs. This study reports the facile route for the synthesis of propranolol and its novel derivatives. Herein, propranolol synthesis proceeded from 1-naphthol and isopropylamine under mild and less toxic conditions. Novel propranolol derivatives were designed by reactions of propranolol with benzoyl chloride, pyridinium chlorochromate, and n-butyl bromide through esterification, oxidation reduction, and
more &raquo; ... ylation, respectively. The isolation and purity of compounds were conducted using column chromatography and thin-layer chromatography. Mass spectrometry and 1H-NMR spectroscopy were applied to identify new compounds structure. Propranolol derivatives from 2-chlorobenzoyl chloride (compound 3), 2-fluorobenzoyl chloride (compound 5), and especially acetic anhydride (compound 6) manifested high yields and significantly increased water solubility. Six semisynthetic propranolol derivatives promise to improve antioxidative and biological activities.

Partial Surface Modification of Low Generation Polyamidoamine Dendrimers: Gaining Insight into their Potential for Improved Carboplatin Delivery

Carboplatin (CAR) is a second generation platinum-based compound emerging as one of the most widely used anticancer drugs to treat a variety of tumors. In an attempt to address its dose-limiting toxicity and fast renal clearance, several delivery systems (DDSs) have been developed for CAR. However, unsuitable size range and low loading capacity may limit their potential applications. In this study, PAMAM G3.0 dendrimer was prepared and partially surface modified with methoxypolyethylene glycol
more &raquo; ... mPEG) for the delivery of CAR. The CAR/PAMAM G3.0@mPEG was successfully obtained with a desirable size range and high entrapment efficiency, improving the limitations of previous CAR-loaded DDSs. Cytocompatibility of PAMAM G3.0@mPEG was also examined, indicating that the system could be safely used. Notably, an in vitro release test and cell viability assays against HeLa, A549, and MCF7 cell lines indicated that CAR/PAMAM G3.0@mPEG could provide a sustained release of CAR while fully retaining its bioactivity to suppress the proliferation of cancer cells. These obtained results provide insights into the potential of PAMAM G3.0@mPEG dendrimer as an efficient delivery system for the delivery of a drug that has strong side effects and fast renal clearance like CAR, which could be a promising approach for cancer treatment.

A Weak Allele of FASCIATED EAR 2 (FEA2) Increases Maize Kernel Row Number (KRN) and Yield in Elite Maize Hybrids

Meristems are central to plant growth and development, yet evidence of directly manipulating this control to improve crop yield is scarce. Kernel row number (KRN) is an important agronomic trait that can directly affect maize (Zea mays L.) yield. However, this trait is difficult to select by phenotyping, since it is highly variable in the mixed genetic backgrounds in early selfing generations. This study sought to improve this trait by marker-assisted backcrossing (MABC) of a weak allele of
more &raquo; ... IATED EAR 2 that is known to affect inflorescence meristem size, but the effect of which on yield is unclear. All of the four introgressed tropical elite inbreds of different heterotic groups, which are homozygous for the fea2-1328 allele, had 2–5 more KRNs compared to their respective recurrent parents. Furthermore, one hybrid made from crosses between two introgressed parents also had KRN increases that resulted in up to 28% yield increase compared to the original hybrid across multiple yield trials. The novel negative effects of the pericentromeric fea2 and/or its linkage drag effect on plant height, seed weight, and ear length, which could prevent line improvement, were revealed in several genetic backgrounds. Integration of conventional phenotypic selection to overcome these undesirable effects was discussed. This is the first work to demonstrate the possibility to increase yield of maize varieties using a mutation in a meristem size regulator. The crossing, selection strategies, and recombinant lines in this work can be applied to other elite maize hybrids and provide a potentially straightforward, non-transgenic way to improve the yield of an existing variety by 8–28%.

Analyzing texts from social media encounters many challenges due to their unique characteristics of shortness, massiveness, and dynamic. Short texts do not provide enough context information, causing the failure of the traditional statistical models. Furthermore, many applications often face with massive and dynamic short texts, causing various computational challenges to the current batch learning algorithms. This paper presents a novel framework, namely Bag of Biterms Modeling (BBM), for
more &raquo; ... ing massive, dynamic, and short text collections. BBM comprises of two main ingredients: (1) the concept of Bag of Biterms (BoB) for representing documents, and (2) a simple way to help statistical models to include BoB. Our framework can be easily deployed for a large class of probabilistic models, and we demonstrate its usefulness with two well-known models: Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) and Hierarchical Dirichlet Process (HDP). By exploiting both terms (words) and biterms (pairs of words), the major advantages of BBM are: (1) it enhances the length of the documents and makes the context more coherent by emphasizing the word connotation and co-occurrence via Bag of Biterms, (2) it inherits inference and learning algorithms from the primitive to make it straightforward to design online and streaming algorithms for short texts. Extensive experiments suggest that BBM outperforms several state-of-the-art models. We also point out that the BoB representation performs better than the traditional representations (e.g, Bag of Words, tf-idf) even for normal texts.
