Coping with Construals in Broad-Coverage Semantic Annotation of Adpositions
[article]
2017

pre-print
We consider the semantics of prepositions, revisiting a broad-coverage annotation scheme used for annotating all 4,250 preposition tokens in a 55,000 word corpus of English. Attempts to apply the scheme to adpositions and case markers in other languages, as well as some problematic cases in English, have led us to reconsider the assumption that a preposition's lexical contribution is equivalent to the role/relation that it mediates. Our proposal is to embrace the potential for construal in

We suggest a framework to represent both the scene role and the adposition's lexical function so they can be annotated at scale---supporting automatic, statistical processing of domain-general language---and sketch how this representation would inform a constructional analysis.

Pulmonary Vascular Sarcomas: Clinicopathologic Analysis of 14 Cases
2011
The Korean Journal of Pathology
Primary neoplasms of the great vessels (aorta, pulmonary vessels, and vena cava) are rare. The pathogenesis of these tumors is still unclear, and it has been suggested that these tumors arise from the mesenchymal cells of the muscle anlage in the bulbus cordis in cases of pulmonary artery sarcoma. 1 Most primary sarcomas of the elastic vessels such as the aorta and the pulmonary artery or vein are undifferentiated sarcomas, while leiomyosarcomas predominate in the muscular arteries and great

... ns such as the inferior vena cava. 2,3 Pulmonary vessel sarcomas are rare and show no characteristic symptoms, even though the thromboembolic events are the most severe events, and a subsequently delayed diagnosis may contribute to a fulminant prognosis. Recent advances in imaging modalities and accumulated clinical experience have made it possible to preoperatively diagnose these tumors. Most pulmonary vessel sarcomas have been reported as single case reports and there have only been a few radiologic review articles. 3, 4 Here, we review pulmonary artery and vein sarcomas with their clinicopathologic features. MATERIALS AND METHODS The data were retrospectively collected on all patients who were pathologically confirmed as having pulmonary vessel sarcomas between 1994 and 2010. The included cases were unequivocal cases in which there was evidence of a primary tumor arising within the lumen of the pulmonary vessels radiologically and/or grossly at the time of surgical specimen examination. Clinical history and follow-up data were obtained from the Korea National Statistics Office and the referring physicians. This study was approved by the Institutional Review Board of Samsung Medical Center (IRB No. 2010-09-110). The resected specimens were fixed in 10% buffered formalin and embedded in paraffin. Each case was routinely stained with hematoxylin and eosin. In order to confirm the specific differentiation of the tumors, immunohistochemistry was done using avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex methods.
Nasal Rhinoscleroma in a Nonendemic Area: A Case Report
2003
Journal of Korean medical science
Rhinoscleroma is a chronic, granulomatous infectious lesion most frequently affecting the respiratory tract mucosa. This disease is endemic to Africa, Central and South America, South Central and Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and China. We report an extremely rare disease of nasal rhinoscleroma in Korea. The patient was a 63-yr-old man, who suffered from chronic nasal obstruction and septal deviation. Characteristic histology from a nasal biopsy was proven and special stains for bacteria

... employed: periodic acid-Schiff, Warthin-Starry silver, Giemsa, and Gram stains. Isolation of Klebsiella rhinoscleromatis from a culture of nasal discharge was failed, but ultrastructural examination of numerous phagocyzed bacilli in the Mikulicz cells confirmed the diagnosis. The histiocytic nature of the Mikulicz cells was confirmed, using CD 68 and alpha-1 antitrypsin, and by the ultrastructural features of Mikulicz cells. Here, we emphasize the recognition of this rare entity in nonendemic regions, frequently leading to delayed diagnosis.
Changes in Serum Adenosine Deaminase Activity during Normal Pregnancy
2007
Journal of Korean medical science
Adenosine deaminase (ADA), an enzyme essential for the differentiation of lymphoid cells, has been used for monitoring diseases with altered immunity. The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes in serum ADA activity throughout normal pregnancy. We measured the catalytic values of serum ADA from 202 normal pregnant women using a commercial kit. Subjects were divided into four groups according to the gestational age in weeks (Gwks) (Group I: 5-9 Gwks [n=58]; Group II: 15-20 Gwks [n=

... 63]; Group III: 24-30 Gwks [n=34]; Group IV: 30-39 Gwks [n=47]). IU/L, respectively. The serum ADA activity of group III was significantly higher than the other groups (p<0.05). However, there was no significant correlation between the Gwks and the serum ADA activity. Furthermore, other parameters, such as maternal age (p=0.29), gestational age at delivery (p=0.07), delivery mode (p=0.39), and birth weight (p=0.59) had no correlation with ADA activity. Reference values of serum ADA in normal pregnancy may provide important database for making clinical decisions in pregnancies complicated by conditions where cellular immunity has been altered.

Primary Carcinoid Tumor in the External Auditory Canal
2019
Journal of Pathology and Translational Medicine
A 39-year-old man visited the department of otolaryngology due to an ongoing hearing disturbance that had lasted for 1 year. Temporal bone computed tomography revealed soft tissue density nearly obliterating the left external auditory canal (EAC). The mass was composed of sheets of round tumor cells containing moderate amounts of fine granular cytoplasm and salt and pepper chromatin. Neither mitosis nor necrosis was found. The Ki-67 proliferation index was less than 2%. Cells were positive for

... D56 and synaptophysin but negative for chromogranin, cytokeratin (CK) 20, and CK7. Based on these findings, the tumor was diagnosed as a carcinoid tumor, well differentiated neuroendocrine carcinoma, grade 1 (G1) according to current World Health Organization (WHO) classification of head and neck tumors; and a neuroendocrine tumor, G1 according to neuroendocrine neoplasm (NEN)-2018 WHO standard classification. He remained free of local recurrence and metastasis after 20 months of follow up. To date, only six cases of primary NENs in the EAC have been reported. Metastatic tumor should be included in the differential diagnoses. Because of its rarity, the prognosis and treatment have not yet been clarified.
