SUSTAINABLE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION ELEMENTS IN GREEN HIGHWAY

Sustainable development principles have been implemented in various sectors including construction. Proper development and operation of infrastructure projects such highways can contribute significantly to the mission of sustainable development. Previous studies shown that most of conventional highways are unsustainable in many ways. Highways are facing severe challenge such as deteriorating condition, congestion, energy supply, and shortfall of funding for maintenance and capacity expansion to

However at the same time, they consume huge amount of natural minerals and energy and generate waste and emission which contributing to climate changes and global warming. Therefore, sustainable design, construction, operation and maintenance have become priority these day. The aim of this paper is to determine critical elements for sustainable design and construction based on ranking of the priority level of the weighted value of each criteria. The questionnaires survey were developed and distributed to related respondents in order to obtain the agreement level for the element. The data was analysed using SPSS with factor analysis method. Result from the analysis shown the criteria, weightage and score for main criteria for sustainable design and construction activities for green highway.

Assessing Building Vulnerability to Tsunami Hazard in Padang

It may be necessary to carry out a study about risk analysis of building vulnerability to tsunami hazard in order to identify and develop potential tsunami risk in a coastal community. more &raquo; ... building vulnerability to tsunami hazard in Padang. Risk level is determined by relative vulnerabilty index score of each building to a tsunami. The buildings were classified in five classes (very low risk, low, medium, high and very high). The method used to analize pattern of various types of building and tsunami inundation is by applying formulas in the field and simulating an earthquake with TUNAMI N3 Imamura method respectively. Clearly, the relative vulnerability index ranges of the building samples in Parupuk Tabing are from 3 to 5 (medium, high and very high risk). This study shows that risk components for building protection are around 30 to 40%, whereas water inundation is 33.33%, followed by building vulnerability of 22.67-33.67%. It can be estimated that, the condition can be very vulnerable, if the level of water is more than 2 m around a building and the vulnerability of water is around 33%. The results of this study contribute to the development of risk management strategies in designing of building and construction standards as well as plan for vertical evacuation and land use zones in order to mitigate the impact of tsunami disaster in coastal communities of Padang.

Neural Network Model for Design Constructability Assessment

This paper presents an artificial neural network (ANN) technique of analysis for the assessment of design constructability. The multilayer back-propagation neural network model consists of 12 and 1 output variable. The input variables are the level of applications of constructability factors, which are sub-factors of the most important design phase constructability principles while the output variable is the level of design constructability. The development of the model goes through five main
more &raquo; ... ages: identifying the design phase constructability principles, identifying the degree of importance of the constructability principles, formulating a framework for measuring the level of application of constructability principles and design constructability, collecting historical project data, and applying ANN to assess design constructability. Each stage of the model development is described. Historical project data sets related to beam construction have been collected from various contractors that have at least several years of experience in building construction. A total of 78 data sets were used to test and train the network. The determination of the optimum number of hidden nodes, hidden layers, initial weights of the links connecting the nodes, and the number of epochs for training the networks, are normally based on trial and error. The best architecture was found to consist of 12 input nodes, 5 hidden nodes, and 1 output node. Kertas ini memaparkan satu kajian mengenai penilaian kebolehbinaan reka bentuk menggunakan kaedah rangkaian neural tiruan (ANN). Model neural timbalbalik berbilang lapis yang dihasilkan mengandungi 12 pemboleh ubah input dan 1 pemboleh ubah output. Pemboleh ubah input terdiri dari tahap gunapakai faktor-faktor kebolehbinaan iaitu merupakan subfaktor prinsip-prinsip terpenting kebolehbinaan fasa reka bentuk manakala pemboleh ubah output adalah tahap kebolehbinaan reka bentuk. Pembangunan model dibuat melalui lima peringkat: mengenal pasti prinsip-prinsip kebolehbinaan fasa reka bentuk, menentukan darjah kepentingan prinsip-prinsip kebolehbinaan, menghasilkan satu kerangka untuk mengukur tahap guna pakai prinsip-prinsip kebolehbinaan dan tahap reka bentuk, mengumpul data-data projek terdahulu, dan mengguna pakai kaedah ANN untuk menilai kebolehbinaan reka bentuk. Setiap peringkat pembentukan model adalah diterangkan. Graphical abstract Abstract The selection of a suitable contractor for a construction project is one of the most important decisions a client can make for the development of the project. Prequalification is a procedure to examine and gauge the competency and skills of contractors to successfully complete a project if it is given to them. However, the evaluation employed for some prequalification is still ambiguous or highly subjective. This study aims to investigate the shortcoming of the
more &raquo; ... t prequalification evaluation for contractor selection. The methodology of the study is based on a comprehensive literature review and expert survey whereby the criticality of data, obtained from the literature was analysed using expert in the field. Among the prequalification criteria, the current evaluation that employed for management capability is highly ambiguous. Two important shortcomings of current prequalification models regarding the evaluation of management capability were identified. First, the models are not comprehensive since all the variables related to the management capability are not included. Secondly, the models focused almost exclusively on time and cost performance as outcome variables, which may not be enough to evaluate the management capability of contractors. Better evaluation methods have to be developed to assess the management capability prequalification as it has a major impact on time and cost performance of contractors. Therefor future study must be conducted to develop a model that evaluates the management capability of contractors based on the relative variables for the purpose of improving current prequalification selection.

Environment Variables on IT Adoption: A Case of Nigerian Construction Organizations

Pirm's external environment combines many attributes and plays a vital role in IT adoption. Technological innovations are adopted as organizational reactions to change and for influencing the business environment. This study examined the effect of external environment on IT adoption in construction organizations. Specifically, the study empirically explores the external variables, assessed their effects and determined how they can optimally be combined to enable IT acceptance. The data
more &raquo; ... was analysed using structural equation modelling analytical approach. Results of the analysis revealed that external environment strongly influence firm's IT adoption with a path coefficient of 0.70 and a z-value of 10.5. Furthermore, a confirmatory factor analysis conducted confirmed competitive pressure, government support and market uncertainty as the most significant variables of firm's external environment in relation to IT implementation with a standardized parameter estimates of 0.75, 0.51 and -0.41 respectively. Precisely, competitive pressure and government support were strongly and positively related to IT adoption while market uncertainty exhibited a strong but negative relationship. It was recommended that managers of construction organizations should, strategically, overcome the pressures they exert from their competitors for improved market share and general organizational performance. Furthermore, government should strive to provide adequate IT infrastructures and enablers within its responsibilities such as adequate electricity, incentives and clear IT policy.

CAUSES OF VARIATION ORDER IN BUILDING AND CIVIL ENGINEERING PROJECTSIN NIGERIA

Variation does not only affect labour productivity but also leads to the dispute, time and cost overrun. Consequently, it affects projects performance. It is, therefore, imperative for construction professionals to eliminate unnecessary additional cost from a project so as to optimize the client's benefit against input resources. This paper identifies and examines the most significant causes that contribute to the variation orders. Also, Nigerian construction industry is used as a case study.
more &raquo; ... riation orders causing factors were assessed. Questionnaires were administered to clients, consultants and contractors to elicit information regarding variation causing factors. These factors were analyzed using frequency aggregation, mean score method and subsequently ranked according to their severity. The result revealed three most significant causes of variation which are: 'Change of plan" with the highest frequency of 58% then followed by "Conflicting contract documents (50%). The next most frequent causing factors were the "substitution of materials" and "change in design" each with frequency of 43%. The least causing factor of variation was the "error and omission in design" with the frequency of 10%. Also differing site condition, new government regulation, weather condition were identified as other cause of variation with the frequency of 27%, 29% and 10% respectively. It has also shown that most critical source of variation order is the client due to change of plan then followed by consultant due to conflicting contract document.

The methodology was intended to bring out accurate results and provide useful sources for the induction of emerging insights relating to the problem identified, which is how the current cost planning used for
more &raquo; ... projects helps in terms of cost control from pre-contract until the demolition of the building. At the end of this research, a proposed cradle to grave cost planning method was produced. To achieve the aims and objectives of this research, both quantitative and qualitative methods were applied. A quantitative research method in the form of a questionnaire survey was conducted to investigate which method is mostly used in preparing cost planning for IBS both from contractors' and consultants' point of view. The next stage of data collection was involved in-depth qualitative investigation using face-to face interviews meant to get in-depth views of each cost planning method's advantages and barriers and what does it need to include to produce an effective cost planning for IBS elements. To complete the triangulation approach, expert group participations and validation were conducted to contribute essential thoughts in producing a comprehensive cradle to grave cost planning method, as well as validating the findings from the research. This method offers alternatives of cost planning and control over the project, and suitable for either IBS or conventional method.

An Integrated Carbon Accounting and Mitigation Framework for Greening the Industry

Greenhouse gases (GHG) emission from industry is one of the potent contributors to the global warming. In industry, the source of carbon emissions related to an industry premise can be categorized into two major types, i.e., direct carbon emission source related to the on-site carbon emission, for instance the emission due to fuel combustion within the premises itself and indirect carbon emission source that is related to the carbon emission at external premises, due to the resource consumption

For instance, electricity, fuel consumption, water consumption, solid waste and waste water will lead to the carbon emission at the power plant, due to the power generation requirement to treat and handle these resource and waste. Therefore, all these five main criteria, i.e., electricity, fuel consumption, water consumption, solid waste and waste water will be selected as carbon performance indicators (CPI). In this study, an integrated carbon accounting and mitigation (INCAM) framework is developed and may serve twofold purposes, tracking of emission in onsite specific area and identify potential emissions reduction strategy in a holistic manner. The systematic steps to develop INCAM includes (1) Define carbon accounting centre (CAC) (2) Establish carbon emission indicators (CEI) for each CAC and CPI (3) Identify the hot spot for each CAC (4) Propose emission reduction strategies and rank emission mitigation measures according to cost effectiveness. INCAM provides relevant information that makes carbon profiling visible to various levels of an organization, enabling industry to plan, make decisions and take effective action to reduce emission towards greening the industry.

Since the effect of global warming and climate changes are becoming serious issues nowadays, most countries are trying to develop their own green highway rating system in order to implement the sustainable practices on their highway.Several studies have discussed the issues relating to the sustainable rating system, but no major study has been conducted to examine the green highway rating system in depth.Material and pavement technology are two most important parameters in the green highway

This study presents an extensive review to identify and establish the material and pavement technology elements that are most appropriate to be considered in developing the green highway rating systems.The relevant literatures have been reviewed to assist in identifying the elements of material and pavement technology. These elements in existing green highway rating systems are tabulated and ranked to show the importance level of each element. Understanding the comparison between these elements in existing green highway rating systems would help in identifying and overcoming the scarcity of the elements. Subsequently, the complete highway rating system can be developed as a performance measure or baseline reference that suit different environment and weather. The result shows that themost appropriate elements in material and pavement technology in highway development are recycled materials and regional materials.These elements could optimize the sustainable designs, encourage the usage of recycled materials, and minimize the transportation that help in reducing pollution and energy consumption.

A B S T R A C T According to the sustainability principles, building should have zero-embodied energy in order to minimize the amount of carbon. In previous practices, construction materials have been composed with non-recyclable materials and after demolition of buildings the debris were put on different landfills. Nowadays, most of the material manufacturers have shifted their concerns to produce materials by using renewable resources, and also gained opportunity in utilizing wasted streams.
more &raquo; ... he proposed biomaterials have been produced using natural fibers which reinforce biodegradable polymeric, in which naturally occurring aliphatic thermoplastic polyesters are produced by microbes via bacterial fermentation in carbon-rich environments. The composite material produced exhibits comparable properties to structural grade wood and is rapidly biodegradable in specific anaerobic conditions, at the end of its useful life. Using anaerobic digester sludge from local wastewater treatment plants as the biodegradation medium, the material decomposes into biogas that consists mostly of inert gases and, of particular interest, methane, which can be captured and used either as a biofuel or as a closed-loop carbon source. This paper documents bio-based composite material development, durability issues, anaerobic biodegradation, and potential industrial applications.

The objective of this article is to establish the attributes (factors) of building vulnerability towards tsunami hazard, particularly for areas in Padang, Indonesia, as well as those areas with the same characteristics. Within this framework, this study informs the progress towards a more systematic approach to factor development for a Relative Vulnerability Index (RVI) score for assessing the building vulnerability towards tsunami hazard. The RVI score is used to predict tsunami risk zones on
more &raquo; ... uilding vulnerability. The analysis was conducted to develop the factors that influence the building vulnerability. Developing factors of the building vulnerability to tsunami hazard is a key aspect for assessing the RVI, as their result may misguide local decision-makers to act adequately concerning the local risk if they are based on an inappropriate set of factors. These factors were classified under three distinct groups: 1) internal factors; 2) external factors and 3) water inundation factor. The selection of factors are based on the building and the location characteristics. Therefore, the factors that may influence the risk were listed. Based on the kinds of literature and opinion of practitioners/experts, several imperative factors that affect the risk were identified and studied. The factors were tabulated and were sorted from highest to lowest numbers. Based on the tabulation of these factors, the summary of analysis results for internal factors are: construction material; the number of stories; foundation type; date of the building; preservation condition; ground floor hydrodynamic; shape and orientation of the building. Furthermore, based on the tabulation results for external data factors and tsunami inundation factor, the external factors are: movable object; building row; height of concrete fence; natural barrier; distance from the coastline; distance from the river; obstacle islands and gap between building attributes and water inundation factor is tsunami inundation depth.
