Toxicity of the organophosphate insecticide sumithion to embryo and larvae of zebrafish
2020
Toxicology Reports
Sumithion, a synthetic organophosphate, is widely used as an agricultural insecticide and for control of tiger bug (Cicindela spp.) in larval rearing for aquaculture. An experiment was conducted to examine the effects of sumithion on embryological and larval development of zebrafish Danio rerio. Fertilized egg (n = 100) and larvae (n = 100) were exposed to six concentrations of sumithion (0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.8 and 1.6 mg L-1) in three replicates. LC50 values for embryos and larvae were

... d by probit analysis. The 24 h LC50 value of sumithion for embryo was 0.235 (0.079-0.428) mgL-1. Increasing sumithion concentrations decreased hatching success and increased embryonic mortality. In embryos, sumithion induced several malformations including immature yolk sac, dark yolk sac, yolk sac bud, broken eggshell and notochord, unhatched eggs. Larval LC50 values at 24, 48 and 72 h of various doses of sumithion exposure were 0.620 (0.436-0.963), 0.475 (0.302-0.801) and 0.341 (0.177-0.617) mgL-1, respectively. Various physical deformities, including edema, notochord deformity, yolk sac damage, body arcuation, lordosis and black pigmentation on the yolk sac were evident in response to different concentrations of sumithion. The results of the current study indicate that sumithion exerts developmental toxicity to zebrafish embryos and larvae. It is expected that current findings will increase sensitivity about the toxic effect of sumithion in early development, as well the possibility of similar actions induced by other insecticides and pesticides.
Sensorineural hearing loss in tubotympanic variety of chronic suppurative otitis media
2020
Bangladesh Journal of Otorhinolaryngology
Objectives: To determine whether chronic suppurative otitis media(CSOM) can cause Sensorineural hearing loss(SNHL) and to note its degree and its relation to duration of disease. Methods: This was a cross sectional study which was carried out in the departments of Otolaryngology and Head-Neck Surgery of Dhaka Medical College Hospital during the period of April'2012 to March'2013. A total number of 76 patients having unilateral CSOM were included in this study age ranging from 6 to 59 years

... exclusion of other possible causes of SNHL such as meningitis, head injury, previous ear surgery and chronic noise exposure. The use of unilateral CSOM cases provided a contralateral ear to serve as a control. Bone conduction threshold elevation between diseased and control ear was considered as the indicator of inner ear damage. Results: In this series, CSOM was seen to be associated with sensorineural hearing loss. Significant threshold elevation was observed in relation to disease duration. Here bone conduction measurement in all frequencies (500Hz,1000Hz,2000Hz and 4000Hz) in diseased and uninvolved contralateral side showed elevation of bone conduction in diseased side and this elevation was significantly higher (p<0.001). The average bone conduction loss at 4kHz was higher than the average at the speech frequency range. Conclusion: This study suggests that CSOM can cause significant bone conduction threshold elevation and it should be considered when managing this problem. Early detection and prompt treatment may limit this potential handicap. Bangladesh J Otorhinolaryngol; April 2016; 22(1): 26-30
Investigating Causal Relations of Economic Variables: Capital, GDP, Labour and Population in Sweden 1870-2000
2015
Dhaka University Journal of Science
The main objective of this paper was to study the causal relationships of the economic variables GDP, labour, capital and population in Sweden during the time period 1870 to 2000. In this paper the theory of unit root tests, vector auto regressive (VAR) model and Granger-Causality test were ased to find the causality of the variables. Augmented Dickey Fuller test was also used as unit root test. By applying all these tests and methods, the causal relationship among the economic variables has been established.

Bilateral Langerhans Cells Histiocytosis in the Temporal Bone: A case report
2020
Bangladesh Journal of Otorhinolaryngology
Langerhans cells histiocytosis (LCH) or histiocytosis-X is a rare group diseases that includes three overlapping diseases of Hand-Schuller-Christian disease (HSC), Letterer-Siwe disease (LS)and Eosinophilic granuloma(EG). It results from clonal proliferation of histiocytes having similar morphology and immunophenotype to Langerhans cells in skin and mucosa Though head and neck manifestation is common, isolated simultaneous bilateral temporal bone Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis is an extremely

... e presentation. Having same otological menifestations, high resolution CT scan is advocated for early identification and differentiation of LCH from other common conditions such as mastoidits, otitis externa ,chronic suppurative otitis media. Diagnosis of LCH is confirmed by biopsy and immunohistochemical staining of S-100 protein and or CD1a antigen. Chemotherapy is main mode of treatment. The prognosis is worse when presenting age of children is younger than 2 years. Bangladesh J Otorhinolaryngol; April 2020; 26(1): 68-72

English
Alangium salvifolium wang is a medicinal plant of the Alanginaceae family which was used as a traditional medicine to cure or prevent a variety of ailments. The aim of the study was to investigate and compare the phytochemical profiles, antioxidant and anticholinesterase effects of ethanol (EASR), dichloromethane (DASR), chloroform (CASR) and aqueous (AASR) extracts of A. salvifolium root. Phytochemical screening was done by using qualitative methods whereas total phenol content (TPC), total

... vonoid content (TFC) and total flavonol content (TFlC) were determined by Folin-Ciocalteau reagent, aluminium trichloride and sodium acetate solution methods, respectively. Antioxidant activities were assessed by DPPH radical scavenging, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and total antioxidant content (TAC) assay. Ellman's assay was applied to investigate acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) enzyme inhibitory effect. Preliminary phytochemical screening revealed the presence of valuable phytochemicals with significantly (P*<0.05, P**<0.01, P***<0.001) different content of TPC, TFC and TFlC. CASR, among the extracts, had shown the highest TPC (492.38±22.34 mg/g gallic acid), followed by TFC (276.25±17.23 mg/g quercetin) and TFlC (332.92±7.07 mg/g quercetin). Moreover, maximum antioxidant potential, including DPPH radical scavenging (IC 50 : 11.26±1.29 µg/ml), FRAP (EC 50 : 26.64±2.17 µg/ml) and TAC (639.55±10.51 mg/g ascorbic acid) was found in the CASR. Donepezil, a standard drug, showed maximum inhibitory effect of AChE (IC 50 : 7.94±1.12 µg/ml) and BChE (IC 50 :12.58±2.15 µg/ml). CASR followed by DASR had potent inhibitory effects while AASR had mild and EASR practically had no inhibitory effects of the enzymes. The present study has demonstrated that the root extracts of the A. salvifolium have moderate to potent antioxidant and enzyme inhibitory effects.
