Deep Learning with Open Data for Desert Road Mapping

2020 Remote Sensing
The availability of free and open data from Earth observation programmes such as Copernicus, and from collaborative projects such as Open Street Map (OSM), enables low cost artificial intelligence (AI) based monitoring applications. This creates opportunities, particularly in developing countries with scarce economic resources, for large–scale monitoring in remote regions. A significant portion of Earth's surface comprises desert dune fields, where shifting sand affects infrastructure and
more » ... s movement. A robust, cost–effective and scalable methodology is proposed for road detection and monitoring in regions covered by desert sand. The technique uses Copernicus Sentinel–1 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite data as an input to a deep learning model based on the U–Net architecture for image segmentation. OSM data is used for model training. The method comprises two steps: The first involves processing time series of Sentinel–1 SAR interferometric wide swath (IW) acquisitions in the same geometry to produce multitemporal backscatter and coherence averages. These are divided into patches and matched with masks of OSM roads to form the training data, the quantity of which is increased through data augmentation. The second step includes the U–Net deep learning workflow. The methodology has been applied to three different dune fields in Africa and Asia. A performance evaluation through the calculation of the Jaccard similarity coefficient was carried out for each area, and ranges from 84% to 89% for the best available input. The rank distance, calculated from the completeness and correctness percentages, was also calculated and ranged from 75% to 80%. Over all areas there are more missed detections than false positives. In some cases, this was due to mixed infrastructure in the same resolution cell of the input SAR data. Drift sand and dune migration covering infrastructure is a concern in many desert regions, and broken segments in the resulting road detections are sometimes due to sand burial. The results also show that, in most cases, the Sentinel–1 vertical transmit–vertical receive (VV) backscatter averages alone constitute the best input to the U–Net model. The detection and monitoring of roads in desert areas are key concerns, particularly given a growing population increasingly on the move.

Avulsion fractures of the iliac crest in the adolescent are rare injuries poorly described in literature. The rarity of this injury along with the late ossification of the growth plate of the iliac crest can lead to misdiagnosis and improper treatment. In presence of high clinical suspicion and negative x-ray findings, second level imaging is advisable. Case reports and some case series report on successful outcome of both surgical and non-surgical treatment. We present the case of a fifteen
more » ... r old female athlete who sustained an avulsion fracture of the iliac crest during a running race. The patient was treated conservatively and returned to previous sport activities after four months from injury. Mechanism of injury, diagnostic options and treatment opportunities are also described.

The aim of this study is to assess whether and how PICO format is described to frame research questions in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) looking at effectiveness of rehabilitation interventions. A methodological study was conducted. RCTs in the rehabilitation field, published between July 1st, 2019 and December 31st, 2019 were included. The framing of the primary research question (RQ) from each trial was evaluated. Ninety-seven RCTs were included in the analysis. The most frequent
more » ... of the primary RQ was as an "objective" statement (55%) and in 33% of the articles this was stated as an "objective" together with a "hypothesis" description. All PICO elements were present in 55% of RQ, but only 49% have used the statement suggested by Cochrane. The results showed that the most frequent framing of primary RQ was "objective" using all PICO elements, but few articles followed the statement suggested by Cochrane to describe them. our findings suggest that a specific item about the "research question" and the rationale that drove to the proposed design following the form suggested by Cochrane is included in the RCTRACK checklist.

DYT1 mutation is characterized by focal to generalized dystonia and incomplete penetrance. To explore the complex perturbations in the different neu-ral networks and the mutual interactions among them, we studied symptomatic and asymptomatic DTY1 mutation carriers by resting-state functional MRI. Methods: A total of 7 symptomatic DYT1, 10 asymp-tomatic DYT1, and 26 healthy controls were consid-ered. Resting-state functional MRI (Oxford Centre for Functional MRI of the Brain) [FMRIB] Software
more » ... rary) (FSL) MELODIC, dual regression, (as a toolbox of FSL, with Nets is referred to "networks") (FSLNets) (http:// fsl.fmrib.ox.ac.uk/fsl/fslwiki/FSLNets) was performed on 9 resting-state neural networks. Results: DYT1 mutation signature (symptomatic DYT1 and asymptomatic DYT1) was characterized by increased connectivity in the dorsal attention network and in the left fronto-parietal network. Functional corre-lates of symptomatic DYT1 patients (symptomatic DYT1 vs healthy controls) showed increased connec-tivity in the sensorimotor network. Discussion: This study argues that DYT1 dystonia is a network disorder, with crucial nodes in sensorymotor integration of posterior parietal structures. A better characterization of cortical networks involved in dysto-nia is crucial for possible neurophysiological therapeu-tic interventions. BACKGROUND: It is known that obesity is associated with a chronic inflammatory state, but few studies have evaluated visceral fat (VF) content and its role in individuals with Crohn's disease (CD). OBJETIVE: To compare the nutritional status, body composition and proportion of VF between CD individuals and healthy volunteers. METHODS: Cross-sectional study that enrolled individuals with Crohn's disease and healthy controls. The stratification according to nutritional status was carried out by
more » ... ans of BMI. The percentage of body fat percentage (%BF) and VF were estimated by means of DEXA. VF proportion was evaluated by means of the VF/BMI and VF/%BF ratios. RESULTS: A total of 78 individuals were included. The control group was comprised of 28 healthy subjects aged 35.39±10 years old (60.7% women); mean BMI=23.94±3.34 kg/m2; mean VF=511.82±448.68 g; mean CRP=0.81±1.78 ng/mL. The CD group was comprised of 50 patients; 11 (22%) were underweight (BMI=18.20±1.97 kg/ m2; %BF=24.46±10.01; VF=217.18±218.95 g; CRP=4.12±4.84 ng/mL); 18 (36%) presented normal weight (BMI=22.43±1.48 kg/m2; %BF=30.92±6.63; VF=542.00±425.47 g and CRP=4.40±1.78 ng/mL); 21 (42%) were overweight or obese (BMI=29.48±3.78 kg/m2; %BF=39.91±7.33; VF=1525.23±672.7 g and CRP=1.33±2.06 ng/mL). The VF/BMI ratio was higher in the CD group when compared to controls (32.41±24.63 vs 20.01±16.23 g per BMI point; P=0.02). Likewise, the VF/%BF was also higher in the CD group (35.21±23.33 vs 15.60±12.55 g per percentage point; P<0.001). CONCLUSION: Among individuals with Crohn's disease, BMI presents a direct correlation with visceral fat content. These results indicate the presence of an adiposopathy in Crohn's disease subjects, which is evidenced by a higher visceral fat.

Data-intensive science communities are progressively adopting FAIR practices that enhance the visibility of scientific breakthroughs and enable reuse. At the core of this movement, research objects contain and describe scientific information and resources in a way compliant with the FAIR principles and sustain the development of key infrastructure and tools. This paper provides an account of the challenges, experiences and solutions involved in the adoption of FAIR around research objects over
more » ... everal Earth Science disciplines. During this journey, our work has been comprehensive, with outcomes including: an extended research object model adapted to the needs of earth scientists; the provisioning of digital object identifiers (DOI) to enable persistent identification and to give due credit to authors; the generation of content-based, semantically rich, research object metadata through natural language processing, enhancing visibility and reuse through recommendation systems and third-party search engines; and various types of checklists that provide a compact representation of research object quality as a key enabler of scientific reuse. All these results have been integrated in ROHub, a platform that provides research object management functionality to a wealth of applications and interfaces across different scientific communities. To monitor and quantify the community uptake of research objects, we have defined indicators and obtained measures via ROHub that are also discussed herein.
