We present for the first time an experimental demonstration on the energy allocation of commodity Wi-Fi signals in a programmable and inexpensive way. To that end, we design an electronically-programmable phase-binary coding metasurface, working at the 2.4GHz Wi-Fi frequency band, to manipulate dynamically and arbitrarily the spatial distribution of commodity Wi-Fi signals. Moreover, highly oriented line structures used to guide the channel growth have been fabricated under optimal conditions and could be utilized as templates to form wrinkled membranes, nanowires, etc. We conclude that electrochemical anodization should be a very promising technique for the fabrication of various nanoscale structures leading to potential applications in optics, solar systems and micro/nano electronics.

Dynamics of catalytic tubular microjet engines: Dependence on geometry and chemical environment

Strain-engineered tubular microjet engines with various geometric dimensions hold interesting autonomous motions in an aqueous fuel solution when propelled by catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide to oxygen and water. The catalytically-generated oxygen bubbles expelled from microtubular cavities propel the microjet step by step in discrete increments. We focus on the dynamics of our tubular microjets in one step and build up a body deformation model to elucidate the interaction between
more » ... bular microjets and the bubbles they produce. The average microjet velocity is calculated analytically based on our model and the obtained results demonstrate that the velocity of the microjet increases linearly with the concentration of hydrogen peroxide. The geometric dimensions of the microjet, such as length and radius, also influence its dynamic characteristics significantly. A close consistency between experimental and calculated results is achieved despite a small deviation due to the existence of an approximation in the model. The results presented in this work improve our understanding regarding catalytic motions of tubular microjets and demonstrate the controllability of the microjet which may have potential applications in drug delivery and biology. † Electronic supplementary information (ESI) available: I. In contrast to blood, which has mechanisms to maintain a homeostatic internal environment, urine is more likely to reflect changes in the body. As urine accumulates all types of changes, identifying the precise cause of changes in the urine proteome is challenging and crucial in biomarker discovery. To reduce the effects of both genetic and environmental factors on the urinary proteome, this study used a rat model of adriamycin-induced nephropathy resembling human focal segmental
more » ... sis (FSGS) development. Urine samples were collected at before adriamycin administration and day3, 7, 11, 15 and 23 after. Urinary proteins were profiled by liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Of 23 changed proteins with disease development, 20 have human orthologs, and 13 proteins were identified as stable in normal human urine, meaning that changes in these proteins are more likely to reflect disease. Fifteen of the identified proteins have not been established to function in FSGS development. Seven proteins were selected for verification in ten more rats as markers closely associated with disease severity by western blot. We identified proteins changed in different stages of FSGS in rat models, which may aid in biomarker development and the understanding of FSGS pathogenesis.

Spreading on the free surface of a complex fluid is ubiquitous in nature and industry, owing to the wide existence of complex fluids. Here we report on a fingering instability that develops during Marangoni spreading on a deep layer of polymer solution. In particular, the wavelength depends on molecular weight and concentration of the polymer solution. We use the Transmission Lattice Method to characterize the finger height at the micron scale. more » ... ng viscoelastic and shear thinning effects, to suggest a more generalized law than the spreading of Newtonian fluids. We give physical explanation on the origin of the fingering instability as due to normal stresses at high shear rate generating high contact angle and deformation at the leading edge, and so selects the wavelength of the fingering instability. Understanding the spreading mechanism has particular implication in airway drug delivery, and surface coating with patterns.
