Pseudoxanthoma Elasticum

Marcus Wiemer, Wolfram Müller, Matthias Heintzen, Dieter Horstkotte
2003 Circulation
A 72-year-old blind woman with pseudoxanthoma elasticum had typical angina pectoris for 6 weeks. She was admitted to our emergency room with signs of anterior myocardial ischemia on ECG. On physical examination there was a remarkable wrinkling of the skin at her neck and elbows. Coronary angiography showed a significant stenosis of the left anterior descending artery (LAD) (Figure 1 ). Because of the eccentric configuration, an atherectomy was carried out, with good primary results ( Figure 2
more » ... Histological examination of the coronary artery specimen revealed an extensive elastolysis and fragmentation of the lamina elastica interna with microcalcifications between intima and media (Figures 3 and 4) . These morphological features are characteristic of a pseudoxanthoma elasticum. After atherectomy, there were no recurrent episodes of chest pain, and coronary angiography at 6-month follow-up showed a widely patent LAD. Figure 1. Coronary arteriogram showing high-grade stenosis of the LAD. Figure 2. Coronary angiogram after atherectomy of the LAD stenosis.

Memory Allocation Tracing with VampirTrace [chapter]

Matthias Jurenz, Ronny Brendel, Andreas Knüpfer, Matthias Müller, Wolfgang E. Nagel
2007 Lecture Notes in Computer Science
The paper presents methods for instrumentation and measurement of applications' memory allocation behavior over time. It provides some background about possible performance problems related to memory allocation as well as to memory allocator libraries. Then, different methods for data acquisition and representation are discussed. Finally, memory allocation tracing integrated in VampirTrace is demonstrated with a real-world HPC example application from aerodynamical simulation and optimization.

Discussion and Conclusions [chapter]

Matthias Otto Müller
2013 Lecture notes in Energy
Area 3 was used for investigation of the classification results. The results are shown in Table 2 . The table shows that clustering of VV data gave the best results with an error rate of 7.2%. The least good results were obtained for crosspolarization with an error rate of 12.2%. ABSTRACT Results from analysis of data obtained in the Snow and Ice experiment within the European Multi-sensor Airborne Campaign (EMAC'95) [2] are presented in this paper. The study area is located in Norway, 66 o N,
more » ... 4 o E. Fully polarimetric C-and L-band SAR data from EMISAR, a airborne instrument operated by the Danish Centre for Remote Sensing, combined with ERS SAR, airborne photos and field data were analyzed in order to determine the capabilities for snow parameter estimation in mountainous areas. The backscatter statistics of EMISAR C-band data from two areas partly covered with wet snow was studied. There was a difference in mean values between the two areas of up to 4.4 dB for snow and up to 1.3 dB for bare ground. For the purpose of classification, this indicates that local class statistics has to be applied. A classification test on a small area of Kmeans clustering showed that the best results was obtained for VV polarization with an error rate of 7.2%. All error rates were between 7.2 and 12.2%. The C-band polarization responses derived from the snowcover corresponds to smooth surface scattering. The extent of the wet snowcover observed by ERS SAR correspond to EMISAR observation.

On Reachable Assignments in Cycles and Cliques [article]

Luis Müller, Matthias Bentert
2020 arXiv   pre-print
The efficient and fair distribution of indivisible resources among agents is a common problem in the field of Multi-Agent-Systems. We consider a graph-based version of this problem called Reachable Assignments, introduced by Gourves, Lesca, and Wilczynski [AAAI, 2017]. The input for this problem consists of a set of agents, a set of objects, the agent's preferences over the objects, a graph with the agents as vertices and edges encoding which agents can trade resources with each other, and an
more » ... itial and a target distribution of the objects, where each agent owns exactly one object in each distribution. The question is then whether the target distribution is reachable via a sequence of rational trades. A trade is rational when the two participating agents are neighbors in the graph and both obtain an object they prefer over the object they previously held. We show that Reachable Assignments is NP-hard even when restricting the input graph to be a clique and develop an O(n^3)-time algorithm for the case where the input graph is a cycle with n vertices.

Purpose: High doses of ionizing radiation in radiotherapy can elicit undesirable side effects to the skin. Proton minibeam radiotherapy (pMBRT) may circumvent such limitations due to tissue-sparing effects observed at the macro scale. Here, we mapped DNA damage dynamics in a 3D tissue context at the sub-cellular level. Methods: Epidermis models were irradiated with planar proton minibeams of 66 µm, 408 µm and 920 µm widths and inter-beam-distances of 2.5 mm at an average dose of 2 Gy using the
more » ... canning-ion-microscope SNAKE in Garching, GER. γ-H2AX + 53BP1 and cleaved-caspase-3 immunostaining revealed dsDNA damage and cell death, respectively, in time courses from 0.5 to 72 h after irradiation. Results: Focused 66 µm pMBRT induced sharply localized severe DNA damage (pan-γ-H2AX) in cells at the dose peaks, while damage in the dose valleys was similar to sham control. pMBRT with 408 µm and 920 µm minibeams induced DSB foci in all cells. At 72 h after irradiation, DNA damage had reached sham levels, indicating successful DNA repair. Increased frequencies of active-caspase-3 and pan-γ-H2AX-positive cells revealed incipient cell death at late time points. Conclusions: The spatially confined distribution of DNA damage appears to underlie the tissue-sparing effect after focused pMBRT. Thus, pMBRT may be the method of choice in radiotherapy to reduce side effects to the skin.

Physical Activity For Health And Longevity

Selina Khoo, Andre Matthias Müller
2013 Zenodo
The aging process is commonly associated with declines in health, cognitive function and well-being. However, lifestyle factors like diet, alcohol consumption, smoking and physical activity were repeatedly highlighted as predictors of a healthy aging process. However, recent research has shown that physical activity is the strongest predictor of health in older adults. Recent studies have confirmed the strong effect of physical activity on cardiovascular, metabolic, musculoskeletal and mental

Despite the overwhelming evidence of the positive effects of physical activity older adults around the globe tend to be inactive. An effective way to increase the physical activity levels in older adults is physician consultation, and this should be implemented widely.

Sabotage in teams

Matthias Kräkel, Daniel Müller
2012 Economics Letters
We show that a team may favor self-sabotage to influence the principal's contract decision. Sabotage increases a team member's bonus and total team effort. If these benefits outweigh the reduction in the success probability, sabotaging the team is rational.
