Effects of Modified Handling on the Physiological Stress of Trawled-and-Discarded Yellowfin Bream (Acanthopagrus australis)

2015 PLoS ONE
Modified handling is often claimed to reduce (sub-)lethal impacts among organisms caughtand-released in fisheries. Improving welfare of discarded fish warrants investigation, when their survival is of both economic and ecological importance. In this study, juvenile yellowfin bream (Acanthopagrus australis) were trawled in an Australian penaeid fishery and then discarded after on-board sorting in either dry or water-filled (modified) trays and with delays in starting sorting of either 2 or 15
more » ... s. Blood plasma cortisol, glucose and potassium were sampled immediately from some yellowfin bream, while others were placed into cages (with controls) and sampled after five days. Irrespective of their on-board handling, all trawled fish incurred a relatively high acute stress response (i.e. an increase in Mean ± SE cortisol from a baseline of <4 to 122.0 ± 14.9 ng/mL) that was mostly attributed to the trawling process, and exacerbated by variation in key parameters (low salinity, changes in water temperature and the presence of jellyfish Catostylus mosaicus in catches). When C. mosaicus was present, the potassium concentrations of fish sampled immediately after sorting were significantly elevated, possibly due to nematocyst contact and subsequent inhibition of ion pumps or cytolysis. Stress also increased during handling in response to warmer air temperatures and longer exposure. While most fish had substantially recovered by 120 hours after discarding, deploying selective trawls (to reduce jellyfish) for short periods and then quickly sorting catches in water would benefit discard welfare.

Sensitive far-IR survey spectroscopy: BLISS for SPICA

2008 Millimeter and Submillimeter Detectors and Instrumentation for Astronomy IV
We present a concept for BLISS, a sensitive far-IR-submillimeter spectrograph for SPICA. SPICA is a JAXA-led mission featuring a 3.5-meter telescope actively cooled to below 5K, envisioned for launch in 2017. The lowbackground platform is especially compelling for moderate-resolution survey spectroscopy, for which BLISS is designed. The BLISS / SPICA combination will offer line sensitivities below 10 −20 W m −2 in modest integrations, enabling rapid survey spectroscopy of galaxies out to

The far-IR fine-structure and molecular transitions which BLISS / SPICA will measure are immune to dust extinction, and will unambiguously reveal these galaxies' redshifts, stellar and AGN contents, gas properties, and heavy-element abundances. Taken together, such spectra will reveal the history of galaxies from 1 GY after the Big Bang to the present day. BLISS is comprised of five sub-bands, each with two R ∼ 700 grating spectrometer modules. The modules are configured with polarizing and dichroic splitters to provide complete instantaneous spectral coverage in two sky positions. To approach background-limited performance, BLISS detectors must have sensitivities at or below 5 × 10 −20 W Hz −1/2 , and the format is 10 arrays of several hundred pixels each. It is anticipated that these requirements can be met on SPICA's timescale with leg-isolated superconducting (TES) bolometers cooled with a 50 mK magnetic refrigerator.

Open reduction and fixation of displaced lateral clavicle fractures using the Minimally Invasive Acromioclavicular Joint Reconstruction (MINAR®) technique: a case series review

2014 Shoulder & Elbow
Lateral end of clavicle fractures can be a challenge, with a 20% to 30% non-union rate if treated nonoperatively. Several operative options exist, each having their own merits and some having potential disadvantages. The Minimally Invasive Acromioclavicular Joint Reconstruction (MINAR Õ ) (Storz, Tutlingen, Germany) set uses an Orthocord (Depuy Synthes Mitek, Leeds, UK) suture and two Flip Tacks (Storz) via a transclavicular-coracoid approach to reconstruct the coracoclavicular ligaments.
more » ... s: Referrals were made to two senior surgeons at separate institutions regarding Robinson Type 3 fractures of the lateral end of the clavicle. All patients were treated with MINAR implant via a minimally invasive approach. Two-year follow-up was obtained using the Oxford Shoulder Score (OSS) and the Quick DASH (Disability of the Arm Shoulder and Hand) score. Results: Sixteen cases of acute fractures of the lateral end of the clavicle were included in this series. At final follow-up, the mean OSS was 44.75 (range 35 to 48) and the median Quick DASH score was 2.3 (range 0 to 35.9). Fifteen patients achieved bony union (one asymptomatic non-union) and there were no complications or re-operations. Conclusions: The MINAR is reproducible and safe when treating lateral end of clavicle fractures. We consider that, over the short-to mid-term, it achieves results equivalent to those for other implants.

2020 Journal of Hospital Medicine
Intravenous (IV) magnesium is used as an adjunct therapy in management of status asthmaticus with a goal of reducing intubation rate. A recent review suggests that IV magnesium use in status asthmaticus reduces admission rates. This is contrary to the observation of practicing emergency room physicians. The goal of this study was to assess trends in IV magnesium use for status asthmaticus in US children's hospitals over 8 years through a retrospective analysis of children younger than 18 years

Outcomes were IV magnesium use, inpatient and intensive care unit admission rate, geometric mean length of stay, and 7-day all-cause readmission rate. IV magnesium use for asthma hospitalization more than doubled over 8 years (17% vs. 36%; P < .001). Yearly trends were not significantly associated with hospital or intensive care unit admission rate or 7-day all-cause readmissions, although length of stay was reduced (P < .001).
