JUTE AND TEA DISCRIMINATION THROUGH FUSION OF SAR AND OPTICAL DATA

Remote sensing approaches based on both optical and microwave region of EM spectra have been widely adapted for large scale crop monitoring and condition assessment. Visible, infrared and microwave wavelengths are sensitive to different crop characteristics, thus data from optical and radar sensors are complementary. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) responds to the large scale crop structure (size, shape and orientation of leaves, stalks, and fruits) and the dielectric properties of the crop

Research is needed to assess the saturation effects of SAR data and to investigate the synergy between the optical and SAR imagery for exploring various dimensions of crop growth which is not possible with any one of them singly with higher degree of accuracy. An attempt has been made to study the potential of SAR and optical data individually and by fusing them to separate various landcover classes. Two-date and three-date SAR data could distinguish jute and tea crop with 70-85% accuracy, while cloud free optical data (green, red and infrared bands) resulted in accuracy 80-85%. On fusing the optical and SAR single date data of May, 29 2010 using Brovey method, an accuracy of 85% was obtained. PCA and HSV with munsell based approaches resulted in similar accuracies but HSV performed the best among these. This emphasizes on the synergistic effect of SAR and optical data. Also the fused data could be used to delineate the crop condition and age by inputs like NDVI from optical and XPR (Cross polarization ratio) from SAR data. The co-and cross polarization ratios along with various indices viz. Biomass Index (BMI), Volume Scattering Index (VSI) and canopy structural index (CSI) were used to discriminate tea from jute. Due to differences in structural component of tea and jute at early season as manifested by the indices, there is clear separability as observed from the mean values. Jute Crop Discrimination and Biophysical Parameter Monitoring Using Multi-Parametric SAR Data in West Bengal, India

The article highlights the results of a study carried out to understand the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) response to the second most important fibre crop of India i.e. Jute at C and L band frequency and at multiple polarizations. Methodology has been well established to classify jute crop using 3-date multitemporal HH SAR data and is being used for national level forecast in India. Performance comparison of single polarization (HH) multi-date versus dual-polarization 2-date data from Radarsat
more &raquo; ... (both dual-pol HH/HV and quad-pol) was evaluated. Three-date HH polarization (May, 05, May 29 and June 22) data had results comparable to two-date HH/HV data with around 90% accuracy. Correlation between backscattered signals and crop height shows that L-band signal has high correlation with crop height particularly in the peak or advanced crop growth stage as compared to C-band. Also backscatter variation with percent area cover has been investigated. Both plant height and area cover show stronger dependence to cross-polarization backscatter. Biophysical parameters viz. crop height and vigour map has been generated which will aid in monitoring growth and yield potentials.

A polarimetric radar system measures the complete scattering matrix of a target in the backscattered field that includes magnitudes of linearly polarized scattering amplitudes and the copolarised and cross-polarised phase angles. Apart from backscattering intensity, the co-polarization phase difference (CPD) calculated from polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data produces important information about target physical, geometrical and dielectric properties. In the present work, the
more &raquo; ... ution of CPD in C-band polarimetric SAR data corresponding to major kharif and rabi crops (denoting the monsoon and the winter season) and other land cover features have been studied over Central State Farm, Hisar, Haryana. The probability density functions (PDF) of CPD have been compared with dominant scattering contributions from these targets as obtained from polarimetric target decompositions. The results show that crops and other land cover features show characteristic CPD distributions, which relates well with crop physical and geometrical properties. An intuition of the rate of growth and plant vigour is indicative from the temporal PDF pattern.

In the present study evaluation of L-band SAR data at different polarization combinations in linear, circular as well as hybrid polarimetric imaging modes for crop and other landuse classifications has been carried out. Full-polarimetric radar data contains all the scattering information for any arbitrary polarization state, hence data of any combination of transmit and receive polarizations can be synthesized, mathematically from full-polarimetric data. more &raquo; ... rimetric data (where the transmitter polarization is either circular or orientated at 45 • , called π/4 and the receivers are at horizontal and vertical polarizations with respect to the radar line of sight) were synthesized (simulated) from ALOS-PALSAR fullpolarimetric data of 14th December 2008 over central state farm central latitude and longitude 29 • 15 N/75 • 43 E and bounds for northwest corner is 29 • 24 N/75 • 37 E and southeast corner is 29 • 07 N/75 • 48 E in Hisar, Haryana (India) Supervised classification was conducted for crops and few other landuse classes based on ground truth measurements using maximum-likelihood distance measures derived from the complex Wishart distribution of SAR data at various polarization combinations. It has been observed that linear fullpolarimetric data showed maximum classification accuracy (92%) followed by circular-full (89%) and circular-dual polarimetric data (87%), which was followed by hybrid polarimetric data (73-75%) and then linear dual polarimetric data (63-71%). Also multidate single polarization SAR data over central state farm during rabi (winter) season was analyzed and it was observed that single date fullpolarimetric SAR data produced equally good classification result as the multi-date single polarization SAR data.

Lower Respiratory Tract Infections (LRTIs) are important causes of morbidity and mortality for all age groups both in the hospital as well as in the community. Though international guidelines are available for treating bacterial LRTI they have not been validated very much in the Indian scenario. Scarce local information is available regarding aetiological agents of LRTI and their antibiotic sensitivity pattern. Pneumocystis carinii (Jiroveci) is a common pathogen in LRTI in immuno-compromised

MATERIALS AND METHODS Two hundred adults suffering from LRTI of less than 2 weeks duration from both inpatient and outpatient departments in a Tertiary Care Hospital at Kolkata were included in the study after taking valid informed consent. Study period was one year . Sputum samples were collected as per criteria of Murray et al. 1975. After performing routine culture, diagnosis was made based on colony character and biochemical reactions. Antimicrobial sensitivity testing was then done according to CLSI guidelines.

STRATEGIES TO PROMOTE RENEWABLE ENERGY SOLUTIONS IN OFF-GRID AREAS OF INDIA

India has fifth largest power generation portfolio worldwide with power generation capacity of 329.20 GW (30 April 2017). Still, around 50% of India"s rural population has little or no access to grid-based electricity and relies on kerosene as its primary source of lighting. States with highest number of underserved population are Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Bihar, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh. Promoting renewable energy (RE) in off grid areas will not only solve electricity problem but also
more &raquo; ... climate vulnerability, increase adaptive capacity towards climate change and lead to social equity. The aim of this paper is to propose strategies to promote RE solutions in off-grid areas and recommendations to make RE in off-grid areas financially feasible and socially sustainable. Government of India (GoI) should restructure the sanctioning of subsidies and authorize private organizations for expediting the process. An independent "Technical Standards Committee" should be formed for determining technical standards, certification and accreditation of the equipments. It should also maintain "Monitoring and Evaluation System" to ensure funds are being used for the intended purpose. GoI should encourage and allocate funds for local manufacturing of Solar Home Systems (SHS) products. Standards and tariff structures should be introduced for feeding electricity into the central grid in "Draft Grid Integration Policy". Furthermore, Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) can play a key role in developing an instalment based financing scheme which reduces monthly cost of SHS to that of kerosene. Hence, efforts taken deliberately in addressing RE will help increase affordability and accessibility in off grid areas.
