A Stable FDTD Subgridding Scheme with SBP-SAT for Transient Electromagnetic Analysis [article]

We proposed a provably stable FDTD subgridding method for accurate and efficient transient electromagnetic analysis. In the proposed method, several field components are properly added to the boundaries of Yee's grid to make sure that the discrete operators meet the summation-by-parts (SBP) property. Then, by incorporating the simultaneous approximation terms (SATs) into the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method, the proposed FDTD subgridding method mimics the energy estimate of the
more &raquo; ... uous Maxwell's equations at the semi-discrete level to guarantee its stability. Further, to couple multiple mesh blocks with different mesh sizes, the interpolation matrices are also derived. The proposed FDTD subgridding method is accurate, efficient, easy to implement and be integrated into the existing FDTD codes with only simple modifications. At last, three numerical examples with fine structures are carried out to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Cloning, Expression, and Tobacco Overexpression Analyses of a PISTILLATA/GLOBOSA-like (OfGLO1) Gene from Osmanthus fragrans

GLOBOSA (GLO), a B-class MADS-box gene, is involved in floral organ determination but has rarely been studied in Osmanthus fragrans, which is a very popular ornamental tree species in China. Here, the full-length cDNA of a homologous GLO1 gene (named OfGLO1) was cloned from a flower bud of O. fragrans using the RACE technique. The OfGLO1 has a 645 bp open reading frame, encoding 214 amino acids. Similar to other PI/GLO proteins, OfGLO1 has two conserved domains, MADS MEF2-like and K-box, and a
more &raquo; ... 6-amino-acid PI motif in the C terminal region. Our phylogeny analysis classified OfGLO1 as a PI-type member of the B-class MADS-box gene family. The qRT-PCR assay showed that the expression of OfGLO1 in O. fragrans was continuously upregulated from the tight bud stage to the full flowering stage but barely expressed in the pistils, sepals, and non-floral organs, such as root, leaf, and stem. The genetic effect of OfGLO1 was assayed by ectopic expression in tobacco plants. Compared with the wild-type, OfGLO1 transformants showed reduced plant size, earlier flowering, shorter stamens, and lower seed setting rates. Furthermore, some stamens were changed into petal-like structures. These findings indicate that OfGLO1 plays an important role in the regulation of flower development. This study improved our understanding of class B gene function in woody plants.

The combination antiretroviral therapeutic (cART) regime effectively suppresses human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) replication and prevents progression to acquired immunodeficiency diseases. However, cART is not a cure, and viral rebound will occur immediately after treatment is interrupted largely due to the long-term presence of an HIV reservoir that is composed of latently infected target cells that maintain a quiescent state or persistently produce infectious viruses. CD4 T cells that
more &raquo; ... in B-cell follicles within lymphoid tissues, called follicular helper T cells (TFH), have been identified as a major HIV reservoir. Due to their specialized anatomical structure, HIV-specific CD8 T cells are largely insulated from this TFH reservoir. It is increasingly clear that the elimination of TFH reservoirs is a key step toward a functional cure for HIV infection. Recently, several studies have suggested that a fraction of HIV-specific CD8 T cells can differentiate into a CXCR5-expressing subset, which are able to migrate into B-cell follicles and inhibit viral replication. In this review, we discuss the differentiation and functions of this newly identified CD8 T-cell subset and propose potential strategies for purging TFH HIV reservoirs by utilizing this unique population.

This work aims to discuss a predator-prey system with distributed delay. Various conditions are presented to ensure the existence and global asymptotic stability of positive periodic solution of the involved model. The method is based on coincidence degree theory and the idea of Lyapunov function. At last, simulation results are presented to show the correctness of theoretical findings.

A composite nanoresonant structure is developed for sensitivity enhancement in biorecognition reactions by coupling between the localized resonance and the propagating surface plasmon polariton waves. Power Efficient Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation Algorithm in OFDMA-PONs

We propose two dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) algorithms by considering three dimensions, i.e., time slot, subcarrier, and bit allocation, to minimize the transmitting power of optical network units (ONUs) in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing access passive optical networks (OFDMA-PONs). In the first proposed algorithm, we make use of the three-dimensional DBA algorithm from wireless OFDM, modify it according to the characteristics of the fiber channel, and apply it to upstream
more &raquo; ... ss in OFDMA-PONs to reduce the transmitting power of ONUs. In order to further minimize the total transmitting power, we propose the second algorithm by allocating the subcarrier and bit in the same procedure. The complexity of the two proposed algorithms was evaluated by polynomial time. From simulation results, the transmitting power of ONUs under a certain bit error rate is reduced by ∼30% and ∼50% using the first and the second proposed algorithms, respectively, compared with the traditional two-dimensional DBA algorithm in OFDMA-PONs. The mechanism of age-related decline in the angiogenic potential of the myocardium is not yet fully understood. Our previous report revealed that the aging of cardiac microvascular endothelial cells (CMECs) led to changes in their expression of receptor Trk isoforms: among the three isoforms (TrkB-FL, TrkB-T1 and TrkB-T2), only the truncated TrkB-T1 isoform continued to be expressed in aged CMECs, which led to decreased migration of CMECs in aging hearts. Here, we first demonstrated that aged CMECs utilize BDNF-TrkB-T1 signalling to recruit Willin as a downstream effector to further activate the Hippo pathway, which then promotes migration. These findings suggest that the aging process shifts the phenotype of aged CMECs that express TrkB-T1 receptors by transducing BDNF signals via the BDNF-TrkB-T1-Willin-Hippo pathway and that this change might be an important mechanism and therapeutic target of the dysfunctional cardiac angiogenesis observed in aged hearts.

ER81 Expression in Breast Cancers and Hyperplasia

ER81 is a transcription factor that may contribute to breast cancer; however, little known about the role of ER81 in breast carcinogenesis. To investigate the role of ER81 in breast carcinogenesis, we examined ER81 expression in IDC, DCIS, ADH, HUT, and normal breast tissues by immunohistochemical staining. We found that ER81 overexpression was detected in 25.7% (9/35) of HUT, 41.2% (7/17) of ADH, 54.5% (12/22) of DCIS, and 63.0% (51/81) of IDC. In 20 of breast cancer tissues combined with
more &raquo; ... ADH, and HUT, ER81 expression was found in 14/20 (70%) IDC. In these 14 cases all cases were ER81 positive expression in DCIS, 13 of 14 cases were positively expressed of ER81 in ADH and 8 of 14 were positive for ER81 in HUT components. A statistical significance was found between NBT and HUT () and HUT and ADH (). Clinical-pathological features analysis of breast cancer revealed that ER81 expression was significantly associated with Her2 amplification and was negatively associated with ER and PR expression. Our results demonstrated that ER81 overexpression was present in the early stage of breast development that suggested that ER81 overexpression may play an important role in breast carcinogenesis.
