A New GAN-based End-to-End TTS Training Algorithm [article]

End-to-end, autoregressive model-based TTS has shown significant performance improvements over the conventional one. However, the autoregressive module training is affected by the exposure bias, or the mismatch between the different distributions of real and predicted data. While real data is available in training, but in testing, only predicted data is available to feed the autoregressive module. more » ... the exposure bias. We propose to use Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) along with the key idea of Professor Forcing in training. A discriminator in GAN is jointly trained to equalize the difference between real and predicted data. In AB subjective listening test, the results show that the new approach is preferred over the standard transfer learning with a CMOS improvement of 0.1. Sentence level intelligibility tests show significant improvement in a pathological test set. The GAN-trained new model is also more stable than the baseline to produce better alignments for the Tacotron output.

High-tech giants and start-ups are investing in drone technologies to provide urban air delivery service, which is expected to solve the last-mile problem and mitigate road traffic congestion. However, air delivery service will not scale up without proper traffic management for drones in dense urban environment. Currently, a range of Concepts of Operations (ConOps) for unmanned aircraft system traffic management (UTM) are being proposed and evaluated by researchers, operators, and regulators.
more » ... ong these, the tube-based (or corridor-based) ConOps has emerged in operations in some regions of the world for drone deliveries and is expected to continue serving certain scenarios that with dense and complex airspace and requires centralized control in the future. Towards the tube-based ConOps, we develop a route network planning method to design routes (tubes) in a complex urban environment in this paper. In this method, we propose a priority structure to decouple the network planning problem, which is NP-hard, into single-path planning problems. We also introduce a novel space cost function to enable the design of dense and aligned routes in a network. The proposed method is tested on various scenarios and compared with other state-of-the-art methods. Results show that our method can generate near-optimal route networks with significant computational time-savings.

It is well-known that exploiting label correlations is crucially important to multi-label learning. Most of the existing approaches take label correlations as prior knowledge, which may not correctly characterize the real relationships among labels. Based on this assumption, we first propose a novel method to learn the label correlations via sparse reconstruction in the label space. Then, by seamlessly integrating the learned label correlations into model training, we propose a novel multi-label learning approach that aims to explicitly account for the correlated predictions of labels while training the desired model simultaneously. Extensive experimental results show that our approach outperforms the state-of-the-art counterparts.

SiC/Ti6Al4V coatings were applied on carbon/carbon composites to improve the surface wettability of water. SiC interlayers were preprepared by pack cementation to bond both the carbon/carbon composites and the Ti6Al4V, and then the Ti6Al4V coatings were applied by magnetron sputtering technique. The morphology and crystalline of the SiC/Ti6Al4V coatings were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The SiC/Ti6Al4V coatings covered the carbon/carbon composites uniformly with spherical morphology. The coatings improved the surface wettability of carbon/carbon composites with the contact angle of water decreasing from 85.7 ± 4.1° to 26.5 ± 0.1°.

In this paper, objective Bayesian analysis for the Student-t linear regression model with unknown degrees of freedom is studied. The reference priors under all the possible group orderings for the parameters in the model are derived. The posterior propriety under each reference prior is validated by considering a larger class of priors. Simulation studies are carried out to investigate the frequentist properties of Bayesian estimators based on the reference priors. Finally, the Bayesian approach is applied to two real data sets.

Transformation-optical Fan-beam Synthesis

Gradient-index dielectric lenses are generated based on the coordinate transformation by compressing the homogeneous air spaces quasi-conformally towards and outwards the primary source. more » ... over a broad frequency range with their main lobes possessing the narrow beamwidth in one dimension and the wide beamwidth in the other, while having the great ability of the wide angular scanning. Finally, we propose to construct such four types of fan-beam lenses through multiple-layered dielectrics with non-uniformed perforations and experimentally demonstrate their excellent performances in the fan-beam synthesis. With simultaneously high gain and wide azimuth coverage, fan-beam radiator has been widely adopted in various applications among different disciplines 1 . It demonstrates highly efficiency for the bone scan in the medical imaging 2 , yields a significant link-budget advantage for the indoor wireless communication 3 , and also presents superior qualities for the height-finding as well as the obstacle detection in the radar system 4-6 . The truncated parabolic reflector (TPR) has been so far the most commonly used device to produce the fan-beams 7 . Due to the inequality of the radiating aperture, the primary spherical waves from the focus are collimated differently. The narrower beam-width is achieved in the dimension where the reflector has the intact radiating aperture and the wider beam-width is obtained in the other dimension. The dielectric lens, at the same time, has also been proved to be a promising candidate to synthesize the fan-beams. Different from the three-dimensional (3D) construction of the TPR, most of the lens designs only adopt two-dimensional (2D) structures, such as the cylindrical Luneburg lenses 8-10 , and the up-to-date meta-surface lenses 11-14 , serving in the parallel plate waveguides or on the grounded metamaterial surfaces. These demonstrations successfully fulfill the functionality as fan-beam generators to collimate the radiation in the lens locating plane and maintain the beam pattern nearly unchanged in others, possessing the merits of low profile and convenience in the conformal design. However, such 2D proposals of the thin sheets also constrain their application at the same time due to the structural limitation of small perception windows connecting the outside in the direction of the main beam. Therefore, the practical utilization of the dielectric lenses compared with the ubiquitous TPRs in the radar antenna system for the fan-beam applications is still limited. Transformation optics 15-17 , as a promising strategy to control the electromagnetic fields since 2006, has been widely adopted to build up the new antenna system 18-24 . These proposals, either based on the 2D coordinate transformation to synthesize the flat lenses, or creating the 3D construction of the transformational media by rotating the 2D permittivity map around its symmetry axis 25 , have demonstrated the great efficiency to collimate the cylindrical wave from a primary line source or the spherical wave from an isotropic point source. Although 2D lenses should be considered as the valid candidate for fan-beam lenses, the existing literatures have scarcely mentioned the synthesis of fan-beams using the transformation optics, with most of the 2D designs focusing on the perfect generation of the directive radiations, and the 3D set-ups aiming for the sharp pencil-beams. Transformation optics, having much wider applications in the wave control, should be powerful for different kinds of beam-forming and function as a very useful tool for the design of fan-beams. Based on these considerations, we demonstrate the transformational constructions of the 2D and the 3D lenses for the fan-beam generation in this paper. The homogeneous air spaces are compressed quasi-conformally based on the 2D coordinate transformation to come up with two kinds of the gradient-index dielectric lenses having the plano-concave profile and flat profile.
