Adaptive tests of homogeneity for a Poisson process
[article]
2009
arXiv
pre-print
We propose to test the homogeneity of a Poisson process observed on a finite interval. In this framework, we first provide lower bounds for the uniform separation rates in L^2 norm over classical Besov bodies and weak Besov bodies. Surprisingly, the obtained lower bounds over weak Besov bodies coincide with the minimax estimation rates over such classes. Then we construct non asymptotic and nonparametric testing procedures that are adaptive in the sense that they achieve, up to a possible

... thmic factor, the optimal uniform separation rates over various Besov bodies simultaneously. These procedures are based on model selection and thresholding methods. We finally complete our theoretical study with a Monte Carlo evaluation of the power of our tests under various alternatives.
Physics-Based Swarm Intelligence for Disaster Relief Communications

This study explores how a swarm of aerial mobile vehicles can provide network connectivity and meet the stringent requirements of public protection and disaster relief operations. In this context, we design a physics-based controlled mobility strategy, which we name the extended Virtual Force Protocol (VFPe), allowing self-propelled nodes, and in particular here unmanned aerial vehicles, to fly autonomously and cooperatively. In this way, ground devices scattered on the operation site may

We further investigate through simulations the behavior of the VFPe protocol, notably focusing on the way node location information is disseminated into the network as well as on the impact of the number of exploration nodes on the overall network performance.
An Integrated Aerial Telecommunications Network that Supports Emergency Traffic
[article]
2012
arXiv
pre-print
This paper outlines how an aerial telecommunications network can optimally meet the stringent needs of emergency relief and recovery operations. We propose a novel architecture, made of an integrated and highly dynamic multi-purpose aerial telecommunications infrastructure that can be contextually extended with fast-deploying high or low altitude platforms. In particular, we analyze the interest and challenges of adapting core concepts from substitution networks and controlled mobility

We give an estimation of the emergency traffic supported by the lower altitude platforms in an example scenario and discuss the challenges posed by this architecture, notably in terms of disaster resilience and ability to efficiently provide sustained first responder communications.

Airborne Base Stations for Emergency and Temporary Events
[article]
2013
arXiv
pre-print
This paper introduces a rapidly deployable wireless network based on Low Altitude Platforms and portable land units to support disaster-relief activities, and to extend capacity during temporary mass events. The system integrates an amalgam of radio technologies such as LTE, WLAN and TETRA to provide heterogeneous communications in the deployment location. Cognitive radio is used for autonomous network configuration. Sensor networks monitor the environment in real-time during relief activities

Transplanted lungs and the "white plague"

Rationale: Solid organ transplant recipients, especially after lung transplantation, are at increased risk for Mycobacterium tuberculosis pulmonary tuberculosis due to lifelong immunosuppression. Patient concerns: A 41-year-old woman underwent a second bilateral lung transplantation that was complicated by fatal pulmonary tuberculosis. Diagnoses: Histological examination of a lung biopsy performed 6 weeks after retransplantation revealed a caseating granuloma and necrosis. Acid-fast bacilli

... identified as rifampicin-susceptible M. tuberculosis by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR), confirmed by culture 2 weeks later. Interventions: Our investigation led us to highly suspect that the transplanted lungs were the source of M. tuberculosis transmission. Lessons: In order to optimize diagnosis and treatment for lung recipients with latent or active tuberculosis, regular assessment of lower respiratory samples for M. tuberculosis, particularly during the 12-month period posttransplant should be implemented. Regarding donor-derived transmission, screening donor grafts with latent tuberculosis by M. tuberculosis real-time PCR in lymphoid and adipose tissues is an option that should be considered. Abbreviations: BAL = bronchoalveolar lavage, CT = chest-computerized tomography, DNA = deoxyribonucleic acid, IGRA = interferon-g release assay, LTBI = latent tuberculosis infection, PCR = polymerase chain reaction, SOT = solid organ transplant, TST = tuberculin skin test.

Adaptive Energy Efficient Communications for Hybrid Aerial-Terrestrial Systems
[article]
2013
arXiv
pre-print
Aerial telecommunications networks based on Low Altitude Platforms (LAPs) are expected to optimally meet the urgent needs of emergency relief and recovery operations for tackling large scale natural disasters. The energy efficient operation of such networks is important given the fact that the entire network infrastructure including the battery operated ground terminals, exhibit requirements to operate under power constrained situations. In this paper, we propose and evaluate a real-time

... e transmission strategy for dynamic selection of direct and cooperative links based on the channel conditions for improved energy efficiency. We show that the cooperation between mobile terrestrial terminals on the ground could improve the energy efficiency in the uplink depending on the temporal behavior of the terrestrial and the aerial uplink channels. The simulation analysis corroborates that the adaptive transmission technique improves the overall energy efficiency of the network.
