Toxicidad aguda de una formulación comercial de glifosato sobre Poecilla reticulata (pisces:poecilidae) en condiciones de laboratorio

La mortalidad fue evaluada<br />a las 24, 48, 72 y 96 horas encontrándose que esta aumentó con la<br />concentración del herbicida y con el tiempo transcurrido. También se<br />observaron alteraciones en el patrón de nado de los peces estudiados El<br />valor de la concentración letal 50 del glifosato sobre P. reticulata a las<br />96 horas de aplicados los tratamientos fue de 3.14 mg/L, lo que sugiere<br />un impacto ecológico en ecosistemas naturales y un uso potencial de esta<br />especie de pez como biondicador de contaminación para este herbicida<br />en ensayos de toxicidad aguda.</p>

Surgical instrument grounding for robot-assisted interventions

We present the first experimental framework for segmenting instruments in surgical scenes guided by natural language descriptions. Previous approaches rely exclusively on visual cues, thus ignoring the fine-grained nature of the problem. We exploit the rich domain knowledge of function by introducing structured descriptions. Our method, the Language-Guided Instrument (LGI) Segmentation network, merges three levels of information to compute the probability of an object candidate belonging to
more » ... surgical instrument category: context information (the image's features), local information (the candidate's features) and language information (a sentence per class), in which we include the differentiating details of each instrument type. We perform a comprehensive experimental evaluation over the standard benchmarks for the task and we show that LGI enhances the performance of different backbone instance segmentation methods, obtaining a significant improvement over the state-of-the-art. To the best of our knowledge, we propose the first experimental framework for jointly applying vision and language to a high-impact global healthcare problem.

Time difference of arrival (TDOA) positioning methods have experienced growing importance over the last few years due to their multiple applications in local positioning systems (LPSs). more » ... ed. A confidence interval, which is defined in this paper as a sphere, is defined to use positioning algorithms with four different nodes. It is proven that the separation between solutions in the four-beacon TDOA problem allows the transformation of the problem into an analogous one in which more receivers are implied due to the geometric properties of the intersection of hyperboloids. The achievement of the distance between solutions needs the application of genetic algorithms in order to find an optimized sensor distribution. Results show that positioning algorithms can be used 96.7% of the time with total security in cases where vehicles travel at less than 25 m/s.

Cell Fate Potential of NG2 Progenitors

Determining the origin of different glial subtypes is crucial to understand glial heterogeneity, and to enhance our knowledge of glial and progenitor cell behavior in embryos and adults. NG2-glia are homogenously distributed in a grid-like manner in both, gray and white matter of the adult brain. While some NG2-glia in the CNS are responsible for the generation of mature oligodendrocytes (OPCs), most of them do not differentiate and they can proliferate outside of adult neurogenic niches. more » ... NG2-glia constitute a heterogeneous population containing different subpopulations with distinct functions. We hypothesized that their diversity emerges from specific progenitors during development, as occurs with other glial cell subtypes. To specifically target NG2-pallial progenitors and to define the NG2-glia lineage, as well as the NG2-progenitor potential, we designed two new StarTrack strategies using the NG2 promoter. These approaches label NG2 expressing progenitor cells, permitting the cell fates of these NG2 progenitors to be tracked in vivo. StarTrack labelled cells producing different neural phenotypes in different regions depending on the age targeted, and the strategy selected. This specific genetic targeting of neural progenitors in vivo has provided new data on the heterogeneous pool of NG2 progenitors at both embryonic and postnatal ages.

Investigating the Role of Insight, Decision-Making and Mentalizing in Functional Outcome in Schizophrenia: A Cross-Sectional Study

Recovery has become a priority in schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs). This study aimed to investigate predictors of objective—general functioning and disability—and subjective—quality of life (QoL)—measures of functional outcomes in SSD. Methods: Sample: n = 77 SSD outpatients (age 18–64, IQ > 70) participating in a randomised controlled trial. Baseline data were used to build three multivariable linear regression models on: (i) general functioning—General Assessment of Functioning (GAF);
more » ... ii) disability—the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule (WHODAS-2.0); and (iii) QoL—Satisfaction Life Domains Scale (SLDS). Results: Young age and being employed (R2 change = 0.211; p = 0.001), late adolescence premorbid adjustment (R2 change = 0.049; p = 0.0050), negative symptoms and disorganization (R2 change = 0.087; p = 0.025) and Theory of Mind (R2 change = 0.066, p = 0.053) predicted general functioning. Previous suicidal behaviour (R2 change = 0.068; p = 0.023) and negative and depressive symptoms (R2 change = 0.167; p = 0.001) were linked with disability. Previous suicidal behaviour (R2 change = 0.070, p = 0.026), depressive symptoms (R2 change = 0.157; p < 0.001) and illness recognition (R2 change = 0.046, p = 0.044) predicted QoL. Conclusions: Negative, disorganization and depressive symptoms, older age, unemployment, poor premorbid adjustment, previous suicide attempts and illness awareness appear to underlie a poor global functional outcome in SSD. Achieving recovery in SSD appears to require both symptomatic remission (e.g., through antipsychotics) and measures to improve mastery and relieve low mood.

In memoriam: Odette Terol Levy Se fue una compañera, pero sobre todo una amiga. Una de esas personas que dibujan un encuentro diferente y que te ilusiona con la experiencia de vivir. Odette se ha ido siendo coherente con el valor más importante en su vida, la libertad. Libertad para poder elegir la vida que quiso vivir, pero también para elegir su muerte, tras mucho tiempo de lucha impetuosa con su enfermedad. Pero para vivir libre hay que ser valiente, creer en uno mismo y alejarse, a veces,
more » ... convencionalismos. Así era Odette, además de curiosa e inquieta por conocer, en lo personal y en lo profesional. En su ámbito profesional trató a víctimas y a agresores, en contexto clínico y forense. Sin prejuicios, sin usurpar la labor de juez, tratando al violento y a su víctima, ante todo, como seres humanos. Y es que Odette hacía Psicología en aquellos campos donde los protocolos, a veces, no llegan, donde la estadística se queda sin muestra. Ecléctica en sus herramientas, contaba con esa seguridad que te dan los años de experiencia profesional y el reciclaje constante. Acostumbrada a trabajar con la exigencia y rigurosidad que demanda el contexto forense norteamericano, donde desarrolló la mayor parte de su carrera profesional. Sin embargo, le gustaba decir que hacía psicología desde el estómago. Así era ella, sencilla, transparente y desinhibida, algo que según decía te da la edad. Muchos de nosotros, psicólogos con experiencia, y otros muchos, noveles en el campo de la psicología jurídica y forense, hemos podido enriquecernos con esas sesiones clínicas donde desmenuzaba, sin censuras, contando tanto sus errores como sus aciertos, muchos de los casos complicados a los que se había enfrentado. En espacios más íntimos, con unas pizzas, música country y la compañía de sus animales, incluso se atrevía a elaborar perfiles criminales de casos mediáticos, todo un lujo para los que lo pudimos disfrutar. En su práctica clínica, sus pacientes también lloran su pérdida. Se ha ido la persona que les ayudó a crecer, vencer sus temores, superar sus dificultades y creer en sus fortalezas. Eso sí, antes de marcharse se preocupó por encontrarles otra alternativa terapéutica. También sus animales, aunque huérfanos, reciben ahora el cariño y el cuidado de sus familiares y amigos. Y es que así era ella, responsable con sus compromisos y preocupada por el bienestar de los demás. . . Una persona vinculada con lo humano. Se ha ido una sabia de la psicología, no solo por conocimientos sino por habilidades que surgían de una personalidad generosa, humilde y paciente, alejada del egocentrismo y la competitividad, a veces, tan presentes en nuestra profesión. Por eso, más que con distinciones honoríficas o reconocimientos públicos que podamos recoger en este obituario se ha ido con la admiración de todos los que tuvimos la suerte de conocerla y, sobre todo, con ese trocito de corazón que nos robó.

Viral vector use is wide-spread in the field of gene therapy, with new clinical trials starting every year for different human pathologies and a growing number of agents being approved by regulatory agencies. more » ... rafish (Danio rerio) as an in vivo model for adenoviral vectors. We describe how E1/E3-deleted adenoviral vectors achieve efficient transduction when they are administered to zebrafish embryos via intracranial injection. In addition, helper-dependent (high-capacity) adenoviral vectors allow sustained transgene expression in this organism. Taking into account the wide repertoire of genetically modified zebrafish lines, the ethical aspects, and the affordability of this model, we conclude that zebrafish could be an efficient alternative for the early-stage preclinical evaluation of adenoviral vectors.

Gentamicin Formation in Micromonospora purpurea: Stimulatory Effect of Ammonium

The effect of ammoniumon the fermentative production of gentamicin in Micromonospora purpurea has been studied using a chemically defined medium. Ammoniumchloride concentrations ranging from 20 to 1 50 mMresulted in a proportional stimulation of growth and antibiotic formation. The use of other ammonium salts exerted a similar effect. Amongthe products of ammonium assimilation, glutamate and glutamine were able to exert the stimulatory effect. In addition, both amino acids reproduced the
more » ... tion in resting cell systems of this microorganism and this result was not modified by the presence of chloramphenicol, eliminating a possible inductive action as the cause of this effect. The use of a glutamine synthetase inhibitor prevented antibiotic formation. This inhibition was reverted only by glutamine, suggesting that this amino acid was responsible of ammonium stimulation. Glutamine stimulation seems to be due to its ability to produce 2-deoxystreptamine and glucosamine, intermediates of the gentamicin biosynthetic pathway.

Mitochondria are essential organelles present in the vast majority of eukaryotic cells. Their central function is to produce cellular energy through the OXPHOS system, and functional alterations provoke so-called mitochondrial OXPHOS diseases. It is estimated that several hundred mitochondrial proteins have unknown functions. Very recently, C6orf203 was described to participate in mitochondrial transcription under induced mitochondrial DNA depletion stress conditions. Here, we describe another
more » ... ole for C6orf203, specifically in OXPHOS biogenesis under regular culture conditions. HEK293T C6orf203-Knockout (KO) cells generated by CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing showed both reduced grow in galactose, as a carbon source, and in their oxygen consumption capability, strongly suggesting an OXPHOS dysfunction. C6orf203-KO also provoked a depletion of OXPHOS proteins and decreased the activity of the mitochondrial respiratory chain complexes. C6orf203 was present in high molecular weight complexes compatible with mitoribosomes, and in vivo labelling of de novo mitochondrial proteins synthesis revealed that C6orf203-KO severely but not completely affected the translation of mitochondrial mRNAs. Taken together, we describe herein a new function for C6orf203, making it a potential OXPHOS disease-related candidate.

Resumen La enfermedad diverticular yeyunal es una condición clínica muy poco frecuente y habitualmente asintomática. Las complicaciones asociadas aparecen en menos del 30% de los pacientes y pueden manifestarse como inflamación de los divertículos, obstrucción intestinal, hemorragia digestiva, malabsorción intestinal, formación de abscesos intraabdominales y perforación. La clínica de los pacientes es muchas veces inespecífica, requiriendo un alto grado de sospecha para llegar al diagnóstico.

Resección intestinal. Abstract Jejunal diverticular disease is a very uncommon pathology often asymptomatic. Associated complications appear in less than 30% of patients and they can present as diverticulitis, refractary inflammation, obstruction, hemorrhage, perforation or intraabdominal abscess formation. Clinical manifestations are usually unspecific and high suspicion index is required to reach the diagnosis. Treatment of complications includes volume replacement, transfusions, antibiotic therapy, percutaneous drainage or surgical intervention. We present a retrospective observational study of the cases treated in our hospital between 2007 and 2016.
