Performance Modeling and Evaluation for Information-Driven Networks [article]

Kui Wu, Yuming Jiang, Guoqiang Hu
2008 arXiv   pre-print
Information-driven networks include a large category of networking systems, where network nodes are aware of information delivered and thus can not only forward data packets but may also perform information processing. In many situations, the quality of service (QoS) in information-driven networks is provisioned with the redundancy in information. Traditional performance models generally adopt evaluation measures suitable for packet-oriented service guarantee, such as packet delay, throughput,
more » ... nd packet loss rate. These performance measures, however, do not align well with the actual need of information-driven networks. New performance measures and models for information-driven networks, despite their importance, have been mainly blank, largely because information processing is clearly application dependent and cannot be easily captured within a generic framework. To fill the vacancy, we present a new performance evaluation framework particularly tailored for information-driven networks, based on the recent development of stochastic network calculus. We analyze the QoS with respect to information delivery and study the scheduling problem with the new performance metrics. Our analytical framework can be used to calculate the network capacity in information delivery and in the meantime to help transmission scheduling for a large body of systems where QoS is stochastically guaranteed with the redundancy in information.

On the Model Transform in Stochastic Network Calculus [article]

Kui Wu, Yuming Jiang, Jie Li
2010 arXiv   pre-print
Stochastic network calculus requires special care in the search of proper stochastic traffic arrival models and stochastic service models. Tradeoff must be considered between the feasibility for the analysis of performance bounds, the usefulness of performance bounds, and the ease of their numerical calculation. In theory, transform between different traffic arrival models and transform between different service models are possible. Nevertheless, the impact of the model transform on performance

2019 Figshare
Premna fulva Craib, locally known as "Zhangu" in China, is a kind of traditional medicinal plant. A phytochemical investigation on this plant led to the isolation of a novel flavonoid glycoside along with three known analogues. The chemical structure of the new compound was determined by spectral and chemical analysis as apigenin 8-C-β-D-xylopyranoside (1). Compound 1 showed weak inhibitory activities in vitro against to four tumor cell lines (HL-60, Bcap37, SMMC7721, and P388) with IC50 values

we investigate the transmission of probe laser beam in a coupled-cavity system with polaritons by using standard input-output relation of optical fields, and proposed a theoretical schema for realizing a polariton-based photonic transistor. On account of effects of exciton-photon coupling and single-photon optomechanical coupling, a probe laser field can be either amplified or attenuated by another pump laser field when it passes through a coupled-cavity system with polaritons. The Stokes and

First-Order Bilevel Topology Optimization for Fast Mechanical Design [article]

2022 arXiv   pre-print
Topology Optimization (TO), which maximizes structural robustness under material weight constraints, is becoming an essential step for the automatic design of mechanical parts. However, existing TO algorithms use the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) that requires massive computational resources. We present a novel TO algorithm that incurs a much lower iterative cost. Unlike conventional methods that require exact inversions of large FEA system matrices at every iteration, we reformulate the
more » ... as a bilevel optimization that can be solved using a first-order algorithm and only inverts the system matrix approximately. As a result, our method incurs a low iterative cost, and users can preview the TO results interactively for fast design updates. Theoretical convergence analysis and numerical experiments are conducted to verify our effectiveness. We further discuss extensions to use high-performance preconditioners and fine-grained parallelism on the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU).

On the Difficulty of Generalizing Reinforcement Learning Framework for Combinatorial Optimization [article]

Mostafa Pashazadeh, Kui Wu
2021 arXiv   pre-print
Combinatorial optimization problems (COPs) on the graph with real-life applications are canonical challenges in Computer Science. The difficulty of finding quality labels for problem instances holds back leveraging supervised learning across combinatorial problems. Reinforcement learning (RL) algorithms have recently been adopted to solve this challenge automatically. The underlying principle of this approach is to deploy a graph neural network (GNN) for encoding both the local information of
more » ... e nodes and the graph-structured data in order to capture the current state of the environment. Then, it is followed by the actor to learn the problem-specific heuristics on its own and make an informed decision at each state for finally reaching a good solution. Recent studies on this subject mainly focus on a family of combinatorial problems on the graph, such as the travel salesman problem, where the proposed model aims to find an ordering of vertices that optimizes a given objective function. We use the security-aware phone clone allocation in the cloud as a classical quadratic assignment problem (QAP) to investigate whether or not deep RL-based model is generally applicable to solve other classes of such hard problems. Extensive empirical evaluation shows that existing RL-based model may not generalize to QAP.
