The iTEC Widget Store [chapter]

David Griffiths, Kris Popat
<span title="">2015</span> <i title="Springer International Publishing"> Re-engineering the Uptake of ICT in Schools </i> &nbsp;
The iTEC project undertook the task of distributing resources and services for learning activities across a wide range of technological platforms in many different countries. Interoperability was achieved through the W3C widget specifi cation and the Apache Wookie widget server. A connector framework was developed to enable widgets to be embedded in host platforms. In order to facilitate the discovery and deployment of widgets the iTEC Widget Store was developed and evaluated. This is an open
more &raquo; ... urce app store whose functionality is separated from the widgets which it serves. It was found that the adoption of W3C widgets beyond the project was very weak, and consequently there were few widgets available for inclusion in the Widget Store. Consequently a range of authoring functionality was made available in the Widget Store, enabling users to create their own widgets from online resources or local fi les. The Widget Store was also extended to enable it to handle LTI tools, including the management of authorisation keys.

Augmenting the VLE using widget technologies

Can widget technologies revolutionize the VLE and challenge the dominant design of elearning? The authors describe an experimental implementation of the Moodle VLE using the W3C Widget specification and Google Wave Gadget API to replace existing core features. This raises four challenges; (1) By replacing most of the functionality of the VLE with simple reusable applications, the core functionality and design of the VLE is challenged; (2) by allowing these applications to be extracted and used
more &raquo; ... n personal learning environments, the hegemony of the institutional system is challenged; (3) by conducting learning activities in small discrete applications, the model of student tracking is challenged; (4) synchronous, live updating applications challenges the model of user behaviour for the VLE.

The Instant Bookplex system includes a zoomable user interface (ZUI) for navigating through a spatial representation of a document collection. This ZUI supports extended reading in the collection using semantic zooming, graphical presentation of metadata, animated transitions, and an integrated reading tool. It helps users find and re-find documents, choose good documents to read next, and navigate between documents.

Document image decoding using iterated complete path search

<span title="2000-12-21">2000</span> <i title="SPIE"> <a target="_blank" rel="noopener" href="https://fatcat.wiki/container/ttq7pbic7jboja6n4lpaxbsfuu" style="color: black;">Document Recognition and Retrieval VIII</a> </i> &nbsp;
The computation time of Document Image Decoding can be significantly reduced by employing heuristics in the search for the best decoding of a text line. By using a cheap upper bound on template match scores, up to 99.9% of the potential template matches can be avoided. In the Iterated Complete Path method, template matches are performed only along the best path found by dynamic programming on each iteration. When the best path stabilizes, the decoding is optimal and no more template matches
more &raquo; ... be performed. Computation can be further reduced in this scheme by exploiting the incremental nature of the Viterbi iterations. Because only a few trellis edge weights have changed since the last iteration, most of the backpointers do not need to be updated. We describe how to quickly identify these backpointers, without forfeiting optimality of the path. Together these improvements provide a 30x speedup over previous implementations of Document Image Decoding.

A document corpus browser for in-depth reading

Software tools, including Web browsers, e-books, electronic document formats, search engines, and digital libraries are changing the way people read, making it easier for them to find and view documents. However, while these tools provide significant help with short-term reading projects involving small numbers of documents, they provide less help with longer-term reading projects, in which a topic is to be understood in depth by reading many documents. For such projects, readers must find and
more &raquo; ... anage many documents and citations, remember what has been read, and prioritize what to read next. This paper describes three integrated software tools that facilitate in-depth reading. A first tool extracts citation information from documents. A second finds on-line documents from their citations. The last is a document corpus browser that uses a zoomable user interface to show a corpus at multiple granularities while supporting reading tasks that take days, weeks, or longer. We describe these tools and the design principles that motivated them.

Beginning with an observed document image and a model of how the image has been degraded, Document Image Decoding recognizes printed text by attempting to find a most probable path through a hypothesized Markov source. The incorporation of linguistic constraints, which are expressed by a sequential predictive probabilistic language model, can improve recognition accuracy significantly in the case of moderately to severely corrupted documents. Two methods of incorporating linguistic constraints
more &raquo; ... n the best-path search are described, analyzed and compared. The first, called the iterated complete path algorithm, involves iteratively rescoring complete paths using conditional language model probability distributions of increasing order, expanding state only as necessary with each iteration. A property of this approach is that it results in a solution that is exactly optimal with respect to the specified source, degradation, and language models; no approximation is necessary. The second approach considered is the Stack algorithm, which is often used in speech recognition and in the decoding of convolutional codes. Experimental results are presented in which text line images that have been corrupted in a known way are recognized using both the ICP and Stack algorithms. This controlled experimental setting preserves many of the essential features and challenges of real text line decoding, while highlighting the important algorithmic issues. Recently, a technique for incorporating linguistic constraints into DID was proposed and partially explored using a simulated, one-dimensional Morse-code signaling scheme having known corruption parameters. ¤ While useful in illustrating the functioning of the proposed algorithm, that treatment did not place the technique in sufficient perspective to draw conclusions about it. In this paper, we examine that technique more closely, and compare it with the Stack algorithm, which is a standard, widely used alternative. In addition, we replace the one-dimensional Morse-code setting with one involving synthetic two-dimensional text-line images. For methodological reasons, we continue to exercise tight control over the manner in which the images are produced and corrupted. Nevertheless, working on two-dimensional images of printed text improves both the realism and the relevance of the resulting comparison and analysis over the previous experimental framework.

High-dose chemotherapy and autologous stem-cell transplant (HDC/ASCT) is standard treatment of chemosensitive relapsed classical Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL), although outcomes of high-risk relapse (HRR) patients remain suboptimal. We retrospectively analyzed all HRR cHL patients treated with HDC/ASCT at our institution between 01/01/2005-12/31/2019. HRR criteria included primary refractory disease/relapse within 1 year, extranodal extension, B symptoms, requiring > 1 salvage line, or PET+ disease at

The GemBuMel and vorinostat/GemBuMel cohorts had more HRR criteria and more patients with PET+ disease at ASCT. Pre-ASCT BV, anti-PD1, PET-negative disease at ASCT, and maintenance BV increased over time. BEAM and BuMel predominated in earlier years (2005-2007), GemBuMel and BEAM in middle years (2008-2015), and vorinostat/GemBuMel and BEAM in later years (2016-2019). Median follow-up is 50 months (6-186). Outcomes improved over time, with 2-year PFS/OS rates of 58%/82% (2005-2007), 59%/83% (2008-2011), 71%/94% (2012-2015) and 86%/99% (2016-2019) (P.
