Fiber-format dual-comb coherent Raman spectrometer

We demonstrate a fiber-format system for dual-comb coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering spectroscopy. The system is based on two ytterbium fiber (Yb) femtosecond lasers at repetition frequencies of 94 MHz, a Yb amplifier, and a photonic crystal fiber for spectral broadening and generation of pulses with a central wavelength of 1040 nm and durations in the sub-20-fs regime. We observed Raman spectra of acetonitrile and ethyl acetate with spectral coverage from 100 to 1300 cm −1 , resolution of
more &raquo; ... cm −1 , and a signal-to-noise ratio of around 100, when averaging over 10 acquisitions. The design is suitable for implementing portable dual-comb coherent Raman spectrometers.

Localization and integration of thylakoid protein translocase subunit cpTatC

Thylakoid membranes have a unique complement of proteins, most of which are synthesized in the cytosol, imported into the stroma, and translocated into thylakoid membranes by specific thylakoid translocases. Known thylakoid translocases contain a core multi-spanning, membrane-integrated subunit which is also nuclear-encoded and imported into chloroplasts before being integrated into thylakoid membranes. Thylakoid translocases play a central role in determining the composition of thylakoids, yet
more &raquo; ... the manner by which the core translocase subunits are integrated into the membrane is not known. We used biochemical and genetic approaches to investigate integration of the core subunit of the chloroplast Tat translocase, cpTatC, into thylakoid membranes. In vitro import assays show that cpTatC correctly localizes to thylakoids if imported into intact chloroplasts, but it does not integrate into isolated thylakoids. In vitro transit peptide processing and chimeric precursor import experiments suggest that cpTatC possesses a stroma-targeting transit peptide. Import time course and chase assays confirmed that cpTatC targets to thylakoids via a stromal intermediate, suggesting that it might integrate through one of the known thylakoid translocation pathways. However, chemical inhibitors to the cpSecA-cpSecY and cpTat pathways did not impede cpTatC localization to thylakoids when used in import assays. Analysis of membranes isolated from Arabidopsis thaliana mutants lacking cpSecY or Alb3 showed that neither is necessary for cpTatC membrane integration or assembly into the cpTat receptor complex. These data suggest the existence of another translocase, possibly one dedicated to the integration of chloroplast translocases.

On the density scaling of pVT data and transport properties for molecular and ionic liquids

In this work, a general equation of state (EOS) recently derived by Grzybowski et al. [Phys. Rev. E 83, 041505 (2011)] is applied to 51 molecular and ionic liquids in order to perform density scaling of pVT data employing the scaling exponent γ EOS . It is found that the scaling is excellent in most cases examined. γ EOS values range from 6.1 for ammonia to 13.3 for the ionic liquid [C 4 C 1 im] [BF 4 ]. These γ EOS values are compared with results recently reported by , J. Chem. Phys. 134,
more &raquo; ... 07 (2011)] for the scaling exponent γ obtained for several different transport properties, namely, the viscosity, self-diffusion coefficient, and electrical conductivity. For the majority of the compounds examined, γ EOS > γ , but for hexane, heptane, octane, cyclopentane, cyclohexane, CCl 4 , dimethyl carbonate, m-xylene, and decalin, γ EOS < γ . In addition, we find that the γ EOS values are very much higher than those of γ for alcohols, pentaerythritol esters, and ionic liquids. For viscosities and the self-diffusion coefficient-temperature ratio, we have tested the relation linking EOS and dynamic scaling parameters, proposed by Paluch et al. [J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 1, 987-992 (2010)] and Grzybowski et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 133, 161101 (2010); Phys. Rev. E 82, 013501 (2010) ], that is, γ = (γ EOS /φ) + γ G , where φ is the stretching parameter of the modified Avramov relation for the density scaling of a transport property, and γ G is the Grüneisen constant. This relationship is based on data for structural relaxation times near the glass transition temperature for seven molecular liquids, including glass formers, and a single ionic liquid. For all the compounds examined in our much larger database the ratio (γ EOS /φ) is actually higher than γ , with the only exceptions of propylene carbonate and 1-methylnaphthalene. Therefore, it seems the relation proposed by Paluch et al. applies only in certain cases, and is really not generally applicable to liquid transport properties such as viscosities, self-diffusion coefficients or electrical conductivities when examined over broad ranges of temperature and pressure.

Associations of the lactase persistence allele and lactose intake with body composition among multiethnic children

Childhood obesity is a worldwide health concern with a multifaceted and sometimes confounding etiology. Dairy products have been implicated as both proand anti-obesogenic, perhaps due to the confounding relationship between dairy, lactose consumption, and potential genetic predisposition. We aimed to understand how lactase persistence influenced obesity-related traits by observing the relationships among lactose consumption, a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) near the lactase (LCT) gene and
more &raquo; ... body composition parameters in a sample of multiethnic children (n = 296, 7-12 years old). We hypothesized that individuals with the lactase persistence (LP) allele of the LCT SNP (rs4988235) would exhibit a greater degree of adiposity and that this relationship would be mediated by lactose consumption. Body composition variables were measured using dual X-ray absorptiometry and a registered dietitian assessed dietary intake of lactose. Statistical models were adjusted for sex, age, pubertal stage, ethnic group, genetic admixture, socio-economic status, and total energy intake. Our findings indicate a positive, significant association between the LP allele and body mass index (p = 0.034), fat mass index (FMI) (p = 0.043), and waist circumference (p = 0.008), with associations being stronger in males than in females. Our results also reveal that lactose consumption is positively and nearly significantly associated with FMI.

Background-The clinical benefit of cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) for patients with moderate-to-severely symptomatic heart failure, left ventricular systolic dysfunction, and ventricular conduction delay is established. However, some patients do not demonstrate clinical improvement following CRT. It is unclear whether systematic optimization of the programmed atrioventricular (AV) delay improves the rate of clinical response. Methods-SMART-AV is a randomized, multicenter,
more &raquo; ... , three-armed trial that will investigate the effects of optimizing AV delay timing in heart failure patients receiving CRT + defibrillator (CRT-D) therapy. A minimum of 950 patients will be randomized in a 1:1:1 ratio using randomly permuted blocks within each center programmed to either DDD or DDDR with a lower rate of 60. The study will include echocardiographic measurements of volumes and function [e.g., left ventricular end-systolic volume (LVESV)], biochemical measurements of plasma biomarker profiles, and functional measurements (e.g., 6-minute hall walk) in CRT-D patients who are enrolled and randomized to fixed AV delay (i.e., 120 ms), AV delay determined by electrogram-based SmartDelay, or an AV delay determined by echocardiography (i.e., mitral inflow). Patients will be evaluated prior to initiation of CRT, 3 and 6 months post-implant. The primary endpoint is the relative change in LVESV at 6 months between the groups. Patient enrollment commenced in May 2008 and the study is registered at clinicaltrials.gov. Conclusion-SMART-AV is a randomized, clinical trial designed to evaluate three different methods of AV delay optimization to determine whether systematic AV optimization is beneficial for patients receiving CRT for 6 months post-implant.
