We present the case of a 69 year old woman with dropped head syndrome due to INEM, who had cervical myelopathy. The first operation anterior and posterior fusion of three vertebral bodies failed and thus, a second operation posterior long fusion was necessary for the treatment of INEM.

Morphological changes of the arteries in the ovaries of fillies and mares were studied histologically. The major histological features were intimal thickening due to fibromuscular hyperplasia and medial fibroelastotic changes resulting in narrowing of the vascular lumen. Only rarely were changes of the vessels found in the cortical regions except for those in the regressed and cicatrized corpora lutea. These findings suggest that the hemodynamic effects during the presence of a functional corpus luteum may contribute to or be responsible for the vascular lesions in the ovary.

Wave effect in gravitational lensing by a cosmic string

The wave effect in the gravitational lensing phenomenon by a straight cosmic string is investigated. The interference pattern is expressed in terms of a simple formula. We demonstrate that modulations of the interfered wave amplitude can be a unique signature of the wave effect. We briefly mention a possible chance of detecting the wave effect in future gravitational wave observatories.

Microspectrometry is the most definitive technique for obtaining both ultraviolet (UV) and visible light absorption spectra from a very limited area, and this technique allows the determination of lignin distribution throughout an individual cell wall. It is generally accepted that hardwood lignin .is composed mainly of guaiacyl and syringyl moieties. more » ... aiacyl and syringyllignins in vessel and fibre secondary walls differs between earlywood and latewood. The proportion of guaiacyl units in the lignin in the vessel secondary wall is high in earlywood, especially in the initial zone of an annual ring (first formed earlywood); it is lower in latewood. In contrast , the proportion of syringyl units in the lignin in the vessel secondary wall is quite low in earlywood, but becomes appreciable in latewood. The content of syringyl units in the lignin in the fibre secondary wall is high in earlywood, becomes lower in latewood , and again increases in the terminal zone of an annual ring (last formed latewood). Guaiacyllignin is present in appreciable amounts in the terminal zone.

Chromothripsis is the massive but highly localized chromosomal rearrangement in response to a one-step catastrophic event, rather than an accumulation of a series of subsequent and random alterations. Chromothripsis occurs commonly in various human cancers and is thought to be associated with increased malignancy and carcinogenesis. more » ... ted whether chromothripsis could be artificially induced by ionizing radiation. We first elicited DNA double-strand breaks in an oral squamous cell carcinoma cell line HOC313-P and its highly metastatic subline HOC313-LM, using Single Particle Irradiation system to Cell (SPICE), a focused vertical microbeam system designed to irradiate a spot within the nuclei of adhesive cells, and then established irradiated monoclonal sublines from them, respectively. SNP array analysis detected a number of chromosomal copy number alterations (CNAs) in these sublines, and one HOC313-LM-derived monoclonal subline irradiated with 200 protons by the microbeam displayed multiple CNAs involved locally in chromosome 7. Multicolor FISH showed a complex translocation of chromosome 7 involving chromosomes 11 and 12. Furthermore, whole genome sequencing analysis revealed multiple de novo complex chromosomal rearrangements localized in chromosomes 2, 5, 7, and 20, resembling chromothripsis. These findings suggested that localized ionizing irradiation within the nucleus may induce chromothripsis-like complex chromosomal alterations via local DNA damage in the nucleus. Oncotarget 10183

Ca 2 /calmodulin-dependent protein kinases (CaMKs) are important intracellular mediators in the mediation of stimulusŝ ecretion coupling and excitation^contraction coupling in a wide variety of cell types. We attempted to identify and characterize the functional roles of CaMK in mediating pancreatic enzyme secretion. more » ... CaMKs were measured by a radioenzyme assay (REA) using autocamtide II, peptide Q and myosin P-light chain as substrates. Although CaMKII and CaMKIV use autocamtide II as a substrate, peptide Q is more efficiently phosphorylated by CaMKIV than by CaMKII. Intact acini were stimulated with cholecystokinin (CCK)-8, carbachol (CCh) and the high-affinity CCK-A receptor agonist, CCK-OPE, and the cell lysates were used for REA. CCK-8, CCh and CCK-OPE caused a concentration-dependent increase in CaMKs activities. When autocamtide II was used, maximal increases were 1.5^1.8-fold over basal (20.2 þ 2.0 pmol/min/mg protein), with peaks occurring at 20 min after cell stimulation. In separate studies that used peptide Q, CCK-8, CCh and CCK-OPE dose-dependently increased CaMKIV activities. Maximal increases were 1.5^2.4-fold over basal (30.7 þ 3.2 pmol/min/mg protein) with peaks occurring at 20 min after cell stimulation. Peak increases after cell stimulation induced by peptide Q were 1.8^2.8-fold higher than those induced by autocamtide II. CCK-8, CCh and CCK-OPE also significantly increased phosphotransferase activities of myosin light chain kinase (MLCK) substrate (basal: 4.4 þ 0.7 pmol/min/mg protein). However, maximal increases induced by MLCK substrate were less than 10% of those occurring in peptide Q. Characteristics of the phosphotransferase activity were also different between autocamtide II and peptide Q. When autocamtide II was used, elimination of medium Ca 2 in either cell lysates or intact cells resulted in a significant decrease in the activity, whereas it had no or little effect when peptide Q was used. This suggests that Ca 2 influx from the extracellular space is not fully required for CaMKIV activity and Ca 2 is not a prerequisite for phosphotransferase activity once CaMKIV is activated by either intracellular Ca 2 release or intracellular Ca 2 oscillations. The specific CaMKII inhibitor KN-62 (50 WM) had no effect on the CaMKIV activity and pancreatic enzyme secretion elicited by CCK-8, CCh and CCK-OPE. The specific MLCK inhibitor, ML-9 (10 WM), also did not inhibit CCK-8-stimulated pancreatic amylase secretion. In contrast, wide spectrum CaMK inhibitors, K-252a (1 WM) and KT5926 (3 WM), significantly inhibited CaMKIV activities and enzyme secretion evoked by secretagogues. Thus, CaMKIV appears to be an important intracellular mediator during stimulus^secretion coupling of rat pancreatic acinar cells. ß 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. Remnant Lipoprotein Levels in Fasting Serum Predict Coronary Events in Patients With Coronary Artery Disease

Background-Remnant lipoproteins are atherogenic, but assays of remnants have not been available in routine clinical laboratories because of the lack of practical and validated methods. A simple and reliable method for such an assay, using an immunochemical approach, has recently been developed. more » ... -Remnant lipoprotein levels in fasting serum were measured in 135 patients with CAD by an immunoaffinity mixed gel containing anti-apolipoprotein (apo) A-1 and anti-apoB-100 monoclonal antibodies. Patients were followed up for Յ36 months until occurrence of 1 of the following clinical coronary events: recurrent or refractory angina pectoris requiring coronary revascularization, nonfatal myocardial infarction, or cardiac death. Kaplan-Meier analysis demonstrated a significantly higher probability of developing coronary events in patients with the highest tertile of remnant levels (Ͼ5.1 mg cholesterol/dL; 75th percentile of distribution of remnant levels) than in those with the lowest tertile of remnant levels (Յ3.3 mg cholesterol/dL; 50th percentile of the distribution). Higher levels of remnants were a significant and independent predictor of developing coronary events in multivariate Cox hazard analysis including the following covariates: extent of coronary artery stenosis, age, sex, smoking, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hypercholesterolemia, low HDL cholesterol, and hypertriglyceridemia. Conclusions-Higher levels of remnant lipoproteins in fasting serum predict future coronary events in patients with CAD independently of other risk factors. Thus, measurement of fasting remnant levels, assessed by the current immunoseparation method, may be helpful in assessment of CAD risk. (Circulation. 1999;99:2858-2860.)

The carcinogenic potential of 9-(4'-aminophenyl)-9H-pyrido [3,4-b]indole (aminophenylnorharman: APNH), a newly identified heterocyclic amine, was evaluated in a rapid production model for pancreatic duct adenocarcinoma in hamsters. In experiment 1, the initiation potential of APNH was examined. Hamsters received corn oil, 30 mg/kg body weight N-nitrosobis(2-oxopropyl)amine (BOP) or APNH (totally 50 and 100 mg/kg) as initiators followed by two cycles of augmentation pressure for pancreatic duct
more » ... arcinogenesis and were sacrificed 75 to 78 days after the beginning of the experiment. Ductal hyperplasia and atypical hyperplasias developed in hamsters receiving APNH but their numbers and incidences did not differ from the corn oil case. In experiment 2, promoting potential of APNH for pancreatic duct carcinogenesis was examined. Hamsters received 30 mg/kg body weight BOP as an initiator followed by augmentation pressures and thereafter diet containing 0, 25 or 50 ppm APNH for 50 days. All hamsters were sacrificed 100 days after the beginning of the experiment. The numbers and incidences of ductal lesions, including adenocarcinomas, did not differ among the experimental groups. The results suggest, APNH may not have initiation or promotion potential for pancreatic duct carcinogenesis in hamsters. (J Toxicol Pathol 2002; 15: 7-12)
