Permeability Reduction and Electrochemical Impedance of Fractured Rock Grouted by Microbial-Induced Calcite Precipitation

The poor impermeability of fractured rock induced by excavation and construction is improved through the application of microbial-induced calcite precipitation (MICP), but it is difficult to monitor and evaluate the permeability reduction under a confining pressure and fracture aperture. For this, the grouting ratio, permeability, and electrochemical impedance of fractured rock with MICP grouting were experimented with, considering the effects of fracture aperture and confining pressure. The
more &raquo; ... ivalent circuit model of grouting-fractured rock is presented, and the corresponding ratio of the electrical resistivity and cross-sectional area of the grouted fracture ( ρ / S ) is indicated by an electrochemical impedance spectroscope (EIS). The relationships of the permeability coefficient, the ρ / S , and the grouting ratio are analysed. The experimental results show that the Darcy permeability coefficient of fractured rock with MICP grouting is reduced by an order of magnitude of 3 to 4. As fracture aperture ranged from 1.28 to 2.56 mm and grouting rate was 0.003 ml/s, the Darcy permeability coefficient decreased with an increase in confining pressure. The grouting ratio and fracture aperture also decreased with a reduction in ρ / S . The results also showed that the permeability reduction of MICP correspondingly increased in these conditions. What is more, the Darcy permeability coefficient of fractured rock grouted by MICP and its permeability reduction may be well predicted by confining pressure and ρ / S . This study provides a new EIS method for predicting the reduction in permeability of MICP grouting-fractured rock and further enriches the application of MICP and EIS techniques in impermeable rock engineering.

The WIMP dark matter (DM) hypothesis now is in an awkward position, owing to the stronger and stronger exclusion from DM direct detection. In this article we design a mechanism to evade this constraint.The idea is simple. DM has a companion, and they are both charged under the DM protecting symmetry G; they admit the trilinear coupling DM-DM-companion, so the latter provides a portal to the standard model (SM) via, for instance, the coupling to Higgs doublet.Then, DM semi-annihilates into the

The idea can be realized for ZN symmetric models with N >2.We stress that this mechanism has the characteristics of co-annihilation, and as a matter of fact its effect becomes necessary near or above the TeV region. Graphs have become increasingly popular in modeling structures and interactions in a wide variety of problems during the last decade. Graph-based clustering and semi-supervised classification techniques have shown impressive performance. This paper proposes a graph learning framework to preserve both the local and global structure of data. Specifically, our method uses the self-expressiveness of samples to capture the global structure and adaptive neighbor approach to respect the local

Furthermore, most existing graph-based methods conduct clustering and semi-supervised classification on the graph learned from the original data matrix, which doesn't have explicit cluster structure, thus they might not achieve the optimal performance. By considering rank constraint, the achieved graph will have exactly c connected components if there are c clusters or classes. As a byproduct of this, graph learning and label inference are jointly and iteratively implemented in a principled way. Theoretically, we show that our model is equivalent to a combination of kernel k-means and k-means methods under certain condition. Extensive experiments on clustering and semi-supervised classification demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms other state-of-the-art methods.

A Fast Factorization-based Approach to Robust PCA [article]

Robust principal component analysis (RPCA) has been widely used for recovering low-rank matrices in many data mining and machine learning problems. It separates a data matrix into a low-rank part and a sparse part. The convex approach has been well studied in the literature. However, state-of-the-art algorithms for the convex approach usually have relatively high complexity due to the need of solving (partial) singular value decompositions of large matrices. A non-convex approach, AltProj, has
more &raquo; ... lso been proposed with lighter complexity and better scalability. Given the true rank r of the underlying low rank matrix, AltProj has a complexity of O(r^2dn), where d× n is the size of data matrix. In this paper, we propose a novel factorization-based model of RPCA, which has a complexity of O(kdn), where k is an upper bound of the true rank. Our method does not need the precise value of the true rank. From extensive experiments, we observe that AltProj can work only when r is precisely known in advance; however, when the needed rank parameter r is specified to a value different from the true rank, AltProj cannot fully separate the two parts while our method succeeds. Even when both work, our method is about 4 times faster than AltProj. Our method can be used as a light-weight, scalable tool for RPCA in the absence of the precise value of the true rank.

In a magnetic system, the spin orbit coupling can combine with the exchange interaction to generate an anisotropic exchange interaction that favors a chiral arrangement of the magnetization. This is known as the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). Contrary to the Heisenberg exchange interaction, which leads to collinear alignment of lattice spins, the form of DMI is therefore very often to cant the spins by a small angle. If DMI is strong enough to compete with the Heisenberg exchange
more &raquo; ... action and the magnetic anisotropy, it can stabilize chiral domain wall structure such as skyrmion. When a conduction electron passes through a chiral domain wall, the spin of the conduction electron will experience a fictitious magnetic field (Berry curvature) in real space, which deflects the conduction electrons perpendicular to the current direction. Therefore, it will cause an additional contribution to the observed Hall signal that is termed topological Hall effect (THE). The THE has attracted much attention since it is a promising tool for probing magnetic skyrmions. Recent extensive experiments have focused on the the THE in the ferromagnetic/non-ferromagnetic metal heterojunctions due to the inherent tunability of magnetic interactions in two dimensions. We firstly review the THE in ferromagnetic multilayers, in which the domain wall energy with interfacial DMI can be written as σ = 4 √ AK − πD, where Dis the effective DMI energy constant, A the exchange constant, K the anisotropy constant. For the most favorable chirality, it lowers the energy. The limit of this situation is when σ goes to zero, which defines the critical DMI energy constant Dc = 4 √ AK/π. Therefore, the domain wall energy would be negative and the chiral domain walls should proliferate if D > Dc, and the methods that can modulate D and Dc to reduce σ have been explored. We have also reviewed the THE in MnGa/heavy metal bilayers. The largest THE signals have been found based on the MnGa films with smallest Dc, which correspondingly results in the smallest σ. The large topological portion of the Hall signal from the total Hall signal has been extracted in the whole temperature range from 5 to 300 K and the magnitude of fictitious magnetic field has been determined.

Effects of different lipid sources on growth performance, body composition and lipid metabolism of bullfrog Lithobates catesbeiana

23 Fish oil is the most important lipid source, but its limited supply and high cost has forced the feed 24 industry to investigate alternative lipid sources. The goal of this study was therefore to investigate 25 effects of different lipid sources on growth performance, feed digestibility, body composition and lipid 26 metabolism of bullfrog Lithobates catesbeiana. Bullfrogs were fed five diets containing 5.2% of either 27 fish oil (FO), poultry fat (PF), pork lard (PL), soybean oil (SO) or
more &raquo; ... m oil (PO) for 8 weeks. Growth 28 and feed utilization were significantly (P<0.05) affected by different lipid sources. Weight gain and 29 feed intake of bullfrogs fed diets with FO, SO and PO showed no significant difference. Body 30 composition, feed conversion ratio and protein efficiency ratio of bullfrog were not affected by lipid 31 sources. Apparent digestibility coefficients (ADC) of diets and test lipid ingredients were significantly 32 (P<0.05) different among all treatments; the highest ADC for lipid was observed in FO and SO, and the 33 lowest value was found in PF. Fatty acid profiles of muscle reflected the fatty acid composition of 34 dietary lipid source. The activities of hepatic enzymes related to lipid metabolism were significantly 35 affected (P<0.05) by lipid sources; the PF and PL groups had lower activities, compared to other 36 groups. In conclusion, this study shows that fish oil can be totally replaced by SO or PO in bullfrog 37 diets for a period of 8 weeks without negatively affecting growth performance. These alternative lipid 38 sources have no effect on the body composition of bullfrog, while the fatty acid composition of muscle 39 could be modified by lipid sources. Moreover, lipid sources could affect hepatic lipid metabolism of 40 bullfrog. 41

Pattern matching of streaming time series with lower latency under limited computing resource comes to a critical problem, especially as the growth of Industry 4.0 and Industry Internet of Things. However, against traditional single pattern matching model, a pattern may contain multiple subpatterns representing different physical meanings in the real world. Hence, we formulate a new problem, called "consecutive subpatterns matching", which allows users to specify a pattern containing several
more &raquo; ... secutive subpatterns with various specified thresholds. We propose a novel representation Equal-Length Block (ELB) together with two efficient implementations, which work very well under all Lp-Norms without false dismissals. Extensive experiments are performed on synthetic and real-world datasets to illustrate that our approach outperforms the brute-force method and MSM, a multi-step filter mechanism over the multi-scaled representation by orders of magnitude.
