Behavioral research has produced little evidence on sound feature discrimination in neonates. Sensory processes underlying sound perception can be studied using the mismatch negativity (MMN) component of auditory event-related potentials (ERPs), which is not contingent on conscious perception and response. Thus, MMN is suitable for studying newborns, who are difficult to obtain behavioral responses from. The present study thus utilized spectrally rich sounds, known to elicit the most replicable
more » ... MMN in adults, to investigate newborns' preattentive analysis of sound duration and frequency changes. An attempt was also made to control for the obligatory ERP effects on the MMN. Three-partial harmonic tones were presented in Duration and in Frequency oddball conditions to 55 newborns. In the other two, Equiprobable duration and Equiprobable frequency, conditions frequency and duration deviants of the oddball paradigms were presented with equal probabilities among sounds of other durations and frequencies. MMN was elicited in 81% of newborns in Frequency oddball condition and in 78% of newborns in Duration oddball condition. No significant amplitude differences between the duration and frequency MMNs were found, but MMN latency was delayed in Duration condition. The obligatory components seemed to contribute significantly to the deviant-standard difference in Duration but not in Frequency condition. The majority of neonates appear to possess effective sound frequency and duration discrimination mechanisms. Their preattentive sound discrimination is facilitated by spectrally rich sound content. The present findings support a change-detection nature of MMN in neonates; however, sound duration-related obligatory effects need to be taken into account in infant MMN studies.

Objective. To evaluate spectral heart rate (HR) variation using short-term ECG recordings at rest and during the tilt table test.Methods. The values of spectral components of total power (TP), high-frequency power (HF), low-frequency power (LF) and LF: HF ratio were measured at rest and during the head-up tilt in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and their control subjects.Results. Compared to the control subjects, patients with TLE had lower HF () and LF : HF ratio () at rest and

Upon changing from supine to standing position TP () and LF () were attenuated in patients with TLE compared to the control subjects.Conclusion. These results suggest that spectral analysis of HR variation from ECG recordings of short duration may add value to assessment of autonomic nervous system function using autonomic cardiac tests in patients with TLE.

A large group of young children are exposed to repetitive middle ear infections but the effects of the fluctuating hearing sensations on immature central auditory system are not fully understood. The present study investigated the consequences of early childhood recurrent acute otitis media (RAOM) on involuntary auditory attention switching. Methods: By utilizing auditory event-related potentials, neural mechanisms of involuntary attention were studied in 22-26 month-old children (N = 18) who
more » ... d had an early childhood RAOM and healthy controls (N = 19). The earlier and later phase of the P3a (eP3a and lP3a) and the late negativity (LN) were measured for embedded novel sounds in the passive multi-feature paradigm with repeating standard and deviant syllable stimuli. The children with RAOM had tympanostomy tubes inserted and all the children in both study groups had to have clinically healthy ears at the time of the measurement assessed by an otolaryngologist. Results: The results showed that lP3a amplitude diminished less from frontal to central and parietal areas in the children with RAOM than the controls. This might reflect an immature control of involuntary attention switch. Furthermore, the LN latency was longer in children with RAOM than in the controls, which suggests delayed reorientation of attention in RAOM. Conclusions: The lP3a and LN responses are affected in toddlers who have had a RAOM even when their ears are healthy. This suggests detrimental long-term effects of RAOM on the neural mechanisms of involuntary attention.

Early auditory experiences are a prerequisite for speech and language acquisition. In healthy children, phoneme discrimination abilities improve for native and degrade for unfamiliar, socially irrelevant phoneme contrasts between 6 and 12 months of age as the brain tunes itself to, and specializes in the native spoken language. This process is known as perceptual narrowing, and has been found to predict normal native language acquisition. Prematurely born infants are known to be at an elevated
more » ... isk for later language problems, but it remains unclear whether these problems relate to early perceptual narrowing. To address this question, we investigated early neurophysiological phoneme discrimination abilities and later language skills in prematurely born infants and in healthy, full-term infants. Results: Our follow-up study shows for the first time that perceptual narrowing for non-native phoneme contrasts found in the healthy controls at 12 months was not observed in very prematurely born infants. An electric mismatch response of the brain indicated that whereas full-term infants gradually lost their ability to discriminate non-native phonemes from 6 to 12 months of age, prematurely born infants kept on this ability. Language performance tested at the age of 2 years showed a significant delay in the prematurely born group. Moreover, those infants who did not become specialized in native phonemes at the age of one year, performed worse in the communicative language test (MacArthur Communicative Development Inventories) at the age of two years. Thus, decline in sensitivity to non-native phonemes served as a predictor for further language development. Conclusion: Our data suggest that detrimental effects of prematurity on language skills are based on the low degree of specialization to native language early in development. Moreover, delayed or atypical perceptual narrowing was associated with slower language acquisition. The results hence suggest that language problems related to prematurity may partially originate already from this early tuning stage of language acquisition.
