Manual Therapy for Hip Osteoarthritis: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Hip osteoarthritis (HOA) is one of the major causes of disability in seniors and is costly to society. Manual therapy is one therapeutic approach to treating HOA. To assess the effect of manual therapy compared to the placebo or wait-list/no treatment or a minimal intervention control for HOA at post-treatment and short-, intermediate- and long-term follow-ups. more &raquo; ... MBASE, the Cochrane Library, CINAHL, ISI web of knowledge, and Chinese databases from the inception to October 2014 without language restrictions. References of systematic reviews and other related reviews, files in our department, and conference proceedings as grey literature were also screened by hand. RCTs compared manual therapy to the placebo, wait-list/no treatment or a minimal intervention control with an appropriate and precise description of randomization. Two reviewers independently conducted the search results identification, data extraction, and methodological quality assessment. We calculated the risk difference (RD) for dichotomous data and the mean difference (MD) or standardized mean difference (SMD) for continuous data in a fixed or random effect model. The primary outcomes were self-reported pain in the past week and physical function. The secondary outcomes were the quality of life, global perceived effect, patients' satisfaction, cost, and adverse events. Six studies involving 515 HOA patients were included. Five of the 6 studies ranked as high quality in the methodological assessment. Immediately post-treatment, there was low-quality evidence that manual therapy could not statistically significantly relieve pain (SMD: -0.07 [95%CI -0.38 to 0.24]); for physical function, a moderate quality of evidence showed that manual therapy could not improve the physical function significantly (SMD: 0.14 [95%CI -0.08 to 0.37]). We still found low-quality evidence that manual therapy did not benefit the patients in the global perceived effect (RD: 0.12 [95%CI -0.12 to 0.36]), and in terms of quality of life. In addition, the risks of patients in the manual therapy group was 0.13 times higher than that in the controls (RD: 0.13 [95%CI -0.05 to 0.31]) in the low-quality evidence studies. We could not find any evidence that manual therapy benefits the patients at short-, intermediate- or long-term follow-up. There were no studies reporting patients' satisfaction or cost. The limitations of this systematic review include the paucity of literature and inevitable heterogeneity between included studies. This review did not suggest there was enough evidence for manual therapy for the management of HOA. However, we are not confident in making such a conclusion due to the limitations listed above.

The discovery of borospherenes unveiled the capacity of boron to form fullerene-like cage structures. While fullerenes are known to entrap metal atoms to form endohedral metallofullerenes, few metal atoms have been observed to be part of the fullerene cages. Here we report the observation of a class of remarkable metallo-borospherenes, where metal atoms are integral parts of the cage surface. We have produced La3B18- and Tb3B18- and probed their structures and bonding using photoelectron
more &raquo; ... scopy and theoretical calculations. Global minimum searches revealed that the most stable structures of Ln3B18- are hollow cages with D3h symmetry. The B18-framework in the Ln3B18- cages can be viewed as consisting of two triangular B6 motifs connected by three B2 units, forming three shared B10 rings which are coordinated to the three Ln atoms on the cage surface. These metallo-borospherenes represent a new class of unusual geometry that has not been observed in chemistry heretofore.

Cryogenic CMOS technology (cryo-CMOS) offers a scalable solution for quantum device interface fabrication. Several previous works have studied the characterization of CMOS technology at cryogenic temperatures for various process nodes. However, CMOS characteristics for various width/length (W/L) ratios and under different bias conditions still require further research. In addition, no previous works have produced an integrated modeling process for cryo-CMOS technology. In this paper, the
more &raquo; ... of characterization of Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) 0.18 μm CMOS technology at cryogenic temperatures (varying from 300 K to 4.2 K) are presented. Measurements of thin- and thick-oxide NMOS and PMOS devices with different W/L ratios are taken under four distinct bias conditions and at different temperatures. The temperature-dependent parameters are revised and an advanced CMOS model is proposed based on BSIM3v3 at the liquid nitrogen temperature (LNT). The proposed model ensures precision at the LNT and is valid for use in an industrial tape-out process. The proposed method presents a calibration approach for BSIM3v3 that is available at different temperature intervals.

Discrete phase shifters of intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) generates phase quantization error (QE) and degrades the receive performance at the receiver. To make an analysis of the performance loss caused by IRS with phase QE, based on the law of large numbers, the closed-form expressions of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) performance loss (PL), achievable rate (AR), and bit error rate (BER) are successively derived under line-of-sight (LoS) channels and Rayleigh channels. more &raquo; ... Taylor series expansion, the approximate simple closed form of PL of IRS with approximate QE is also given. The simulation results show that the performance losses of SNR and AR decrease as the number of quantization bits increase, while they gradually increase with the number of IRS phase shifter elements increase. Regardless of LoS channels or Rayleigh channels, when the number of quantization bits is larger than or equal to 3, the performance losses of SNR and AR are less than 0.23dB and 0.08bits/s/Hz, respectively, and the BER performance degradation is trivial. In particular, the performance loss difference between IRS with QE and IRS with approximate QE is negligible when the number of quantization bits is not less than 2.

The working principle of a novel power-split powertrain was introduced. And then a novel power-split HEB was tested on chassis dynamometer to valid fuel economy and emission reduction. Test results showed that, this system could improve the fuel economy by 34.9%, and improve NOx emission by 23.2%, and PM by 29.4%. Graphene has great potential for enhancing light − matter interactions in a two-dimensional regime due to surface plasmons with low loss and strong light confinement. Further utilization of graphene in nanophotonics relies on the precise control of light localization properties. Here, we demonstrate the tailoring of electromagnetic field localizations in the mid-infrared region by precisely shaping the graphene into nanostructures with different geometries. more &raquo; ... ity model and employ nanoimaging techniques to quantitatively calculate and experimentally visualize the two-dimensional electromagnetic field distributions within the nanostructures, which indicate that the electromagnetic field can be shaped into specific patterns depending on the shapes and sizes of the nanostructures. Furthermore, we show that the light localization performance can be further improved by reducing the sizes of the nanostructures, where a lateral confinement of λ 0 /180 of the incidence light can be achieved. The electromagnetic field localizations within a nanostructure with a specific geometry can also be modulated by chemical doping. Our strategies can, in principle, be generalized to other two-dimensional materials, therefore providing new degrees of freedom for designing nanophotonic components capable of tailoring two-dimensional light confinement over a broad wavelength range.

Amorphous magnesium carbonate (AMC) is an important phase in the early formation stage of magnesium carbonate. In this study, precipitation experiments were conducted to clarify the formation and transformation process of AMC in aqueous solution. Exosomal tetraspanins mediate cancer metastasis by altering host microenvironment

The metastases of malignant tumors develop through a cascade of events. The establishment of a pre-metastatic micro-environment is initiated by communication between tumors and host. Exosomes come into focus as the most potent intercellular communicators playing a pivotal role in this process. Cancer cells release exosomes into the extracellular environment prior to metastasis. Tetraspanin is a type of 4 times transmembrane proteins. It may be involved in cell motility, adhesion, morphogenesis,
more &raquo; ... as well as cell and vesicular membrane fusion. The exosomal tetraspanin network is a molecular scaffold connecting various proteins for signaling transduction. The complex of tetraspanin-integrin determines the recruiting cancer exosomes to pre-metastatic sites. Tetraspanin is a key element for the target cell selection of exosomes uptake that may lead to the reprogramming of target cells. Reprogrammed target cells assist pre-metastatic niche formation. Previous reviews have described the biogenesis, secretion and intercellular interaction of exosomes in various tumors. However, there is a lack of reviews on the topic of exosomal tetraspanin in the context of cancer. In this review, we will describe the main characteristics of exosomal tetraspanin in cancer cells. We will also discuss how the cancer exosomal tetraspanin alters extracellular environment and regulates cancer metastasis.

Lattice Thermal Conductivity in Thermoelectric Materials

With rapid development of sustainable energies and energy conversion technologies, application prospect of thermoelectric (TE) materials in power generation and cooling has received increasing attention. The requirement of improving TE materials with high figure of merit becomes much more important. How to obtain the low lattice thermal conductivity is one of the main concerns in TE materials. In this review, the influences of specific heat, phonon group velocity and relaxation time on the
more &raquo; ... ce thermal conductivity are discussed, respectively. Several typical features of TE materials with intrinsic low lattice thermal conductivity are introduced, such as strong anharmonicity, weak chemical bonds and complex primitive cells. Introducing multiscale phonon scatterings to reduce the lattice thermal conductivity of known TE materials is also presented and discussed, including but not limited to point defect scattering, dislocation scattering, boundary scattering, resonance scattering and electron-phonon scattering. In addition, some theoretical models of the minimum lattice thermal conductivity are analyzed, which has certain theoretical significance for rapid screening of TE materials with low lattice thermal conductivity. Finally, the efficient ways to obtain the low lattice thermal conductivity for TE property optimization are proposed.

Riboflavin concentration in corneal stroma after intracameral injection

To evaluate the enrichment of riboflavin in the corneal stroma after intracameral injection to research the barrier ability of the corneal endothelium to riboflavin in vivo. The right eyes of 30 New Zealand white rabbits were divided into three groups. Different concentrations riboflavin-balanced salt solutions (BSS) were injected into the anterior chamber (10 with 0.5%, 10 with 1%, and 10 with 2%). more &raquo; ... on and the riboflavin concentrations in the corneal stroma were determined using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) after removing the epithelium and endothelium. The other two rabbits in every group were observed for 24h and sacrificed. As a comparison, the riboflavin concentrations from 16 corneal stromal samples were determined using HPLC after instillation of 0.1% riboflavin-BSS solution for 30min on the corneal surface (8 without epithelium and 8 with intact epithelium). The mean riboflavin concentrations were 11.19, 18.97, 25.08, 20.18, and 1.13 µg/g for 0.5%, 1%, 2%, de-epithelialzed samples, and the transepithelial groups, respectively. The color change of the corneal stroma and the HPLC results showed that enrichment with riboflavin similar to classical de-epithelialized corneal collagen crosslinking (CXL) could be achieved by intracameral 1% riboflavin-BSS solution after 30min; the effect appeared to be continuous for at least 30min. Riboflavin can effectively penetrate the corneal stroma through the endothelium after an intracameral injection in vivo, so it could be an enhancing method that could improve the corneal riboflavin concentration in transepithelial CXL.
