The EIREX series have the following goals: a) to help students get a view of the Information Retrieval process as they would find it in a real-world scenario, either industrial or academic; b) to make students realize the importance of laboratory experiments in Computer Science and have them initiated in their execution and analysis; c) to create a public repository of resources to teach Information Retrieval courses; d) to seek the collaboration and active participation of other Universities in this endeavor. This overview paper summarizes the results of the EIREX 2011 track, focusing on the creation of the test collection and the analysis to assess its reliability.

Sustainable Technologies for Older Adults

2021 Sustainability
The exponential evolution of technology and the growth of the elderly population are two phenomena that will inevitably interact with increasing frequency in the future. This paper analyses scientific literature as a means of furthering progress in sustainable technology for senior living. We carried out a bibliometric analysis of papers published in this area and compiled by the Web of Science (WOS) and Scopus, examining the main participants and advances in the field from 2000 to the first

The study describes some interesting research projects addressing three different aspects of older adults' daily lives—health, daily activities and wellbeing—and policies to promote healthy aging and improve the sustainability of the healthcare system. It also looks at lines of research into transversal characteristics of technology. Our analysis showed that publications mentioning sustainability technologies for older adults have been growing progressively since the 2000s, but that the big increase in the number of research works in this area took place during the period 2016–2021. These more recent works show a tendency to study those factors that improve healthy aging, ensure the social inclusion of the elderly through technology and prolong the time in which they can live independent lives thanks to smart environments. Current research gaps in the literature are also discussed.

Knowledge management in biomedical libraries: A semantic web approach

Damaris Fuentes-Lorenzo, Jorge Morato, Juan Miguel Gómez
2009 Information Systems Frontiers
In recent years, technological advances in highthroughput techniques and efficient data gathering methods, coupled with a world-wide effort in computational biology, have resulted in an enormous amount of life science data available in repositories devoted to biomedical literature. These repositories lack the ability to attain an effective and accurate search. Using semantic technologies as the key for interoperation enables searching and processing of biomedical literature in a more efficient

This paper presents design principles for easy-to-use biomedical semantic applications by means of ontology-based annotations and faceted search. The proposed approach is backed with a usable prototype that shows the breakthroughs of adding these principles to a biomedical digital library where identifying and searching information are critical aspects for non-semantic Web experts.

The importance that DCMI abstract model is acquiring as a metadata model scheme reference has motivated the work of the present analysis. This research has as an objective to make easy its understanding and contribute, from our experience in the use of UML model language revision proposals that improve the notation and representation of some concepts included in the resource model that is included in DCAM. Finally, the model in UML is included, incorporating the recommendations on notation and

Lexical simplification is the task of replacing a word in a given context by an easier-to-understand synonym. Although a number of lexical simplification approaches have been developed in recent years, most of them have been applied to English, with recent work taking advantage of parallel monolingual datasets for training. Here we present LexSiS, a lexical simplification system for Spanish that does not require a parallel corpus, but instead relies on freely available resources, such as an

In experiments with human informants, we have verified that LexSiS performs better than a hard-to-beat baseline based on synonym frequency. TITLE AND ABSTRACT IN SPANISH ¿Puede ser el Español más simple?
