Autonomous Urban Localization and Navigation with Limited Information [article]

Jordan Chipka, Mark Campbell
2018 arXiv   pre-print
Urban environments offer a challenging scenario for autonomous driving. Globally localizing information, such as a GPS signal, can be unreliable due to signal shadowing and multipath errors. Detailed a priori maps of the environment with sufficient information for autonomous navigation typically require driving the area multiple times to collect large amounts of data, substantial post-processing on that data to obtain the map, and then maintaining updates on the map as the environment changes.
more » ... his paper addresses the issue of autonomous driving in an urban environment by investigating algorithms and an architecture to enable fully functional autonomous driving with limited information. An algorithm to autonomously navigate urban roadways with little to no reliance on an a priori map or GPS is developed. Localization is performed with an extended Kalman filter with odometry, compass, and sparse landmark measurement updates. Navigation is accomplished by a compass-based navigation control law. Key results from Monte Carlo studies show success rates of urban navigation under different environmental conditions. Experiments validate the simulated results and demonstrate that, for given test conditions, an expected range can be found for a given success rate.

Anomalous Orbital-Energy Changes Observed during Spacecraft Flybys of Earth

2008 Physical Review Letters
We report and characterize anomalous orbital-energy changes observed during six Earth flybys by the Galileo, NEAR, Cassini, Rosetta, and MESSENGER spacecraft. These anomalous energy changes are consistent with an empirical prediction formula which is proportional to the total orbital energy per unit mass and which involves the incoming and outgoing geocentric latitudes of the asymptotic spacecraft velocity vectors. We use this formula to predict a potentially detectable flyby velocity increase of less than 1 mm=s for a second Rosetta flyby on

Validity of the Visual Trajectories Questionnaire for Pain

Kate M. Dunn, Paul Campbell, Kelvin P. Jordan
2017 Journal of Pain
Highlights  There is growing clinical/research interest in longitudinal patient pain trajectories  We tested the validity of a self-report trajectories question in a back pain population  We compared self-report trajectories to trajectories derived using monthly measurements  We report acceptable validity of a new self-report measure of trajectories Abstract Researchers have identified trajectories of pain derived using statistical techniques on longitudinal data. These trajectories have

Our aim was to investigate the validity of a self-report Visual Trajectories Questionnaire-Pain for pain. Analysis included participants from two prospective cohorts of people seeking primary health care for back pain (n=622). A question was developed asking people to classify their pain experience into one of a number of trajectories using visual and word descriptions. Overall 98% of participants completed the question, criterion validity was established by comparing self-report trajectories and trajectories derived using longitudinal latent class analysis, and construct validity was established by comparing responses to the questionnaire against an existing model of back pain stages. As expected variables such as pain intensity and widespreadness, other symptoms and psychological distress showed an increasing trend of severity across trajectory categories in line with the hypothesised model. In conclusion, the self-report single item Visual Trajectories Questionnaire is acceptable to patients and supported by evidence of face, criterion and construct validity. Further research is needed to investigate the clinical usefulness of the question.

The Neurovascular Basis of Postictal Amnesia [article]

Long-lasting confusion and memory difficulties during the postictal state remain a major unmet problem in epilepsy that lacks pathophysiological explanation and treatment. Previously, we demonstrated that the postictal period is marked by a long-lasting stroke-like event in both animal models and humans with epilepsy (Farrell et al., 2016). Here, we assessed potential mechanisms by which this vascular event leads to memory impairment by studying the hippocampus of rodent seizure models. While

Prevention of postictal stroke-like events by cyclooxygenase inhibition rescued memory impairment and supports a necessary role of hypoperfusion/hypoxia in postictal amnesia. These results provide an objective pathophysiological criterion for defining the postictal state and identifies a strategy and potential drug candidates for treating it.
