Wind emission of OB supergiants and the influence of clumping [article]

The influence of the wind to the total continuum of OB supergiants is discussed. For wind velocity distributions with \beta > 1.0, the wind can have strong influence to the total continuum emission, even at optical wavelengths. Comparing the continuum emission of clumped and unclumped winds, especially for stars with high \beta values, delivers flux differences of up to 30% with maximum in the near-IR. Continuum observations at these wavelengths are therefore an ideal tool to discriminate between clumped and unclumped winds of OB supergiants.

Complications of Microsurgery of Vestibular Schwannoma

Background. The aim of this study was to analyze complications of vestibular schwannoma (VS) microsurgery.Material and Methods. A retrospective study was performed in 333 patients with unilateral vestibular schwannoma indicated for surgical treatment between January 1997 and December 2012. Postoperative complications were assessed immediately after VS surgery as well as during outpatient followup.Results. In all 333 patients microsurgical vestibular schwannoma (Koos grade 1: 12, grade 2: 34,
more &raquo; ... de 3: 62, and grade 4: 225) removal was performed. The main neurological complication was facial nerve dysfunction. The intermediate and poor function (HB III–VI) was observed in 124 cases (45%) immediately after surgery and in 104 cases (33%) on the last followup. We encountered disordered vestibular compensation in 13%, permanent trigeminal nerve dysfunction in 1%, and transient lower cranial nerves (IX–XI) deficit in 6%. Nonneurological complications included CSF leakage in 63% (lateral/medial variant: 99/1%), headache in 9%, and intracerebral hemorrhage in 5%. We did not encounter any case of meningitis.Conclusions. Our study demonstrates that despite the benefits of advanced high-tech equipment, refined microsurgical instruments, and highly developed neuroimaging technologies, there are still various and significant complications associated with vestibular schwannomas microsurgery.

Accelerating a C++ CFD Code with OpenACC

Todays HPC systems are increasingly utilizing accelerators to lower time to solution for their users and reduce power consumption. To utilize the higher performance and energy efficiency of these accelerators, application developers need to rewrite at least parts of their codes. Taking the C++ flow solver ZFS as an example, we show that the directive-based programming model allows one to achieve good performance with reasonable effort, even for mature codes with many lines of code. Using
more &raquo; ... directives permitted us to incrementally accelerate ZFS, focusing on the parts of the program that are relevant for the problem at hand. The two new OpenACC 2.0 features, unstructured data regions and atomics, are required for this. OpenACC's interoperability with existing GPU libraries via the host_data use_device construct allowed to use CUDAaware MPI to achieve multi-GPU scalability comparable to the CPU version of ZFS. Like many other codes, the data structures of ZFS have been designed with traditional CPUs and their relatively large private caches in mind. This leads to suboptimal memory access patterns on accelerators, such as GPUs. We show how the texture cache on NVIDIA GPUs can be used to minimize the performance impact of these suboptimal patterns without writing platform specific code. For the kernel most affected by the memory access pattern, we compare the initial array of structures memory layout with a structure of arrays layout.

Performance and portability of accelerated lattice Boltzmann applications with OpenACC

An increasingly large number of HPC systems rely on heterogeneous architectures combining traditional multi-core CPUs with power efficient accelerators. Designing efficient applications for these systems has been troublesome in the past as accelerators could usually be programmed using specific programming languages threatening maintainability, portability and correctness. Several new programming environments try to tackle this problem. Among them, OpenACC offers a high-level approach based on
more &raquo; ... ompiler directive clauses to mark regions of existing C, C++ or Fortran codes to run on accelerators. This approach directly addresses code portability, leaving to compilers the support of each different accelerator, but one has to carefully assess the relative costs of portable approaches versus computing efficiency. In this paper we address precisely this issue, using as a test-bench a massively parallel Lattice Boltzmann algorithm. We first describe our multi-node implementation and optimization of the algorithm, using OpenACC and MPI. We then benchmark the code on a variety of processors, including traditional CPUs and GPUs, and make accurate performance comparisons with other GPU implementations of the same algorithm using CUDA and OpenCL. We also asses the performance impact associated to portable programming, and the actual portability and performance-portability of OpenACC-based applications across several state-of-the- art architectures.

Complex Corrosion Properties of AISI 316L Steel Prepared by 3D Printing Technology for Possible Implant Applications

This paper deals with the investigation of complex corrosion properties of 3D printed AISI 316L steel and the influence of additional heat treatment on the resulting corrosion and mechanical parameters. There was an isotonic solution used for the simulation of the human body and a diluted sulfuric acid solution for the study of intergranular corrosion damage of the tested samples. There were significant microstructural changes found for each type of heat treatment at 650 and 1050 °C, which

There were changes of corrosion potential, corrosion rate and polarization resistance found by the potentiodynamic polarization method. With regard to these results, the most appropriate heat treatment can be applied to applications with intended use in medicine.

Triplet Finder: On the Way to Triggerless Online Reconstruction with GPUs for the PANDA Experiment

PANDA is a state-of-the-art hadron physics experiment currently under construction at FAIR, Darmstadt. In order to select events for offline analysis, PANDA will use a software-based triggerless online reconstruction, performed with a data rate of 200 GB/s. To process the raw data rate of the detector in realtime, we design and implement a GPU version of the Triplet Finder, a fast and robust first-stage tracking algorithm able to reconstruct tracks with good quality, specially designed for the
more &raquo; ... traw Tube Tracker sub-detector of PANDA. We reduce the algorithmic complexity of processing many hits together by splitting them into bunches, which can be processed independently. We evaluate different ways of processing bunches, GPU dynamic parallelism being one of them. We also propose an optimized technique for associating hits with reconstructed track candidates. The evaluation of our GPU implementation demonstrates that the Triplet Finder can process almost 6 Mhits/s on a single K20X GPU, making it a promising algorithm for the online event filtering scheme of PANDA.

Early onset pauciarticular arthritis is the major risk factor for naproxen-induced pseudoporphyria in juvenile idiopathic arthritis

Pseudoporphyria (PP) is characterized by skin fragility, blistering and scarring in sun-exposed skin areas without abnormalities in porphyrin metabolism. The phenylpropionic acid derivative group of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, especially naproxen, is known to cause PP. Naproxen is currently one of the most prescribed drugs in the therapy of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). The prevalence of PP was determined in a 9-year retrospective study of children with JIA and associated

In addition, we prospectively studied the incidence of PP in 196 patients (127 girls and 69 boys) with JIA and associated diseases treated with naproxen from July 2001 to March 2002. We compared these data with those from a matched control group with JIA and associated diseases not treated with naproxen in order to identify risk factors for development of PP. The incidence of PP in the group of children taking naproxen was 11.4%. PP was particularly frequent in children with the early-onset pauciarticular subtype of JIA (mean age 4.5 years). PP was associated with signs of disease activity, such as reduced haemoglobin (<11.75 g/dl), and increased leucocyte counts (>10,400/microl) and erythocyte sedimentation rate (>26 mm/hour). Comedications, especially chloroquine intake, appeared to be additional risk factors. The mean duration of naproxen therapy before the onset of PP was 18.1 months, and most children with PP developed their lesions within the first 2 years of naproxen treatment. JIA disease activity seems to be a confounding factor for PP. In particular, patients with early-onset pauciarticular JIA patients who have significant inflammation appear to be prone to developing PP upon treatment with naproxen.

Swarm accelerometer data processing from raw accelerations to thermospheric neutral densities

The Swarm satellites were launched on November 22, 2013, and carry accelerometers and GPS receivers as part of their scientific payload. The GPS receivers do not only provide the position and time for the magnetic field measurements, but are also used for determining non-gravitational forces like drag and radiation pressure acting on the spacecraft. The accelerometers measure these forces directly, at much finer resolution than the GPS receivers, from which thermospheric neutral densities can
more &raquo; ... derived. Unfortunately, the acceleration measurements suffer from a variety of disturbances, the most prominent being slow temperature-induced bias variations and sudden bias changes. In this paper, we describe the new, improved four-stage processing that is applied for transforming the disturbed acceleration measurements into scientifically valuable thermospheric neutral densities. In the first stage, the sudden bias changes in the acceleration measurements are manually removed using a dedicated software tool. The second stage is the calibration of the accelerometer measurements against the non-gravitational accelerations derived from the GPS receiver, which includes the correction for the slow temperature-induced bias variations. The identification of validity periods for calibration and correction parameters is part of the second stage. In the third stage, the calibrated and corrected accelerations are merged with the non-gravitational accelerations derived from the observations of the GPS receiver by a weighted average in the spectral domain, where the weights depend on the frequency. The fourth stage consists of transforming the corrected and calibrated accelerations into thermospheric neutral densities. We present the first results of the processing of Swarm C acceleration measurements from June 2014 to May 2015. We started with Swarm C because its acceleration measurements contain much less disturbances than those of Swarm A and have a higher signal-to-noise ratio than those of Swarm B. The latter is caused by the higher altitude of Swarm B as well as larger noise in the acceleration measurements of Swarm B. We show the results of each processing stage, highlight the difficulties encountered, and comment on the quality of the thermospheric neutral density data set.

Novel Germline SUCLG2 Mutations in Patients With Pheochromocytoma and Paraganglioma

Pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas (PPGLs) are rare neuroendocrine tumors derived from neural crest cells that are frequently linked to mutations including those in Krebs cycle enzymes, particularly succinate dehydrogenase (SDH). Succinyl-CoA ligase (SUCL) catalyzes reversible conversion of succinyl-CoA to succinate providing the substrate for SDH. While mitochondrial diseases were documented for the mutations in SUCL subunits G1 and A2, the association of GDP/GTP-specific subunit SUCLG2

In our study, 352 patients with apparently sporadic PPGLs underwent genetic testing using a panel of 54 genes developed at the National Institutes of Health. Additionally, human pheochromocytoma (hPheo1) cells were used for gene manipulation to produce SUCLG2 knock-out (KO). Tumor tissues and hPheo1 SUCLG2 KO cells were used for further analysis focusing on mechanism of germline variants effect on mitochondrial functions. We detected eight germline SUCLG2 mutations in 15 patients which represents 4.3% of the cohort. Germline variants together with LOH led to decreased levels of SDH subunit B resulting in aberrant respiration and accumulation of succinate, well recognized oncometabolite. Manipulation of SUCLG2 in hPheo1 cells confirmed decrease in SDHB leading to faulty assembly of mitochondrial complex II and alteration of its respiration and activity. In summary, our study identified an association between SUCLG2 and PPGL. Larger scale sequencing and uncovering additional cases bearing SUCLG2 variants will further clarify the relationship between SUCLG2 and SDHx, particularly SDHB, as well as their role in disease etiology.

Non-equivalent Role of Inter- and Intramolecular Hydrogen Bonds in the Insulin Dimer Interface

Apart from its role in insulin receptor (IR) activation, the C terminus of the B-chain of insulin is also responsible for the formation of insulin dimers. The dimerization of insulin plays an important role in the endogenous delivery of the hormone and in the administration of insulin to patients. Here, we investigated insulin analogues with selective N-methylations of peptide bond amides at positions B24, B25, or B26 to delineate their structural and functional contribution to the dimer
more &raquo; ... ce. All N-methylated analogues showed impaired binding affinities to IR, which suggests a direct IR-interacting role for the respective amide hydrogens. The dimerization capabilities of analogues were investigated by isothermal microcalorimetry. Selective N-methylations of B24, B25, or B26 amides resulted in reduced dimerization abilities compared with native insulin (K d ‫؍‬ 8.8 M). Interestingly, although the N-methylation in [NMeTyrB26]-insulin or [NMePheB24]-insulin resulted in K d values of 142 and 587 M, respectively, the [NMePheB25]-insulin did not form dimers even at high concentrations. This effect may be attributed to the loss of intramolecular hydrogen bonding between NHB25 and COA19, which connects the B-chain ␤-strand to the core of the molecule. The release of the B-chain ␤-strand from this hydrogen bond lock may result in its higher mobility, thereby shifting solution equilibrium toward the monomeric state of the hormone. The study was complemented by analyses of two novel analogue crystal structures. All examined analogues crystallized only in the most stable R 6 form of insulin oligomers (even if the dimer interface was totally disrupted), confirming the role of R 6 -specific intra/intermolecular interactions for hexamer stability.

An anticlockwise metamorphic P-T path and nappe stacking in the Reisa Nappe Complex in the Scandinavian Caledonides, northern Norway: evidence for weakening of lower continental crust before and during continental collision

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> This study investigates the Caledonian metamorphic and tectonic evolution in northern Norway, examining the structure and tectonostratigraphy of the Reisa Nappe Complex (RNC; from bottom to top, Vaddas, Kåfjord and Nordmannvik nappes). Structural data, phase equilibrium modelling, and U-Pb zircon and titanite geochronology are used to constrain the timing and P-T conditions of deformation and metamorphism that formed the nappes and facilitated crustal thickening

Five samples taken from different parts of the RNC reveal an anticlockwise P-T path attributed to the effects of early Silurian heating followed by thrusting. An early Caledonian S1 foliation in the Nordmannvik Nappe records kyanite-grade partial melting at ~<span class="thinspace"></span>760&amp;ndash;790<span class="thinspace"></span>°C and ~<span class="thinspace"></span>9.4&amp;ndash;11<span class="thinspace"></span>kbar. Leucosomes formed at 439<span class="thinspace"></span>±<span class="thinspace"></span>2<span class="thinspace"></span>Ma (U-Pb zircon) in fold axial planes in the Nordmannvik Nappe indicate that compressional deformation initiated while the rocks were still partially molten. This stage was followed by pervasive solid-state shearing as the rocks cooled and solidified, forming the S2 foliation at 680&amp;ndash;730<span class="thinspace"></span>°C and 9.5&amp;ndash;10.9<span class="thinspace"></span>kbar. Multistage titanite growth in the Nordmannvik Nappe records this extended metamorphism between 444 and 427<span class="thinspace"></span>Ma. In the underlying Kåfjord Nappe, garnet cores record lower P-T (590&amp;ndash;610<span class="thinspace"></span>°C and 5.5&amp;ndash;6.8<span class="thinspace"></span>kbar) but a similar geothermal gradient as the S1 migmatitic event in the Nordmannvik Nappe, indicating formation at a higher relative position in the crust. S2 shearing in the Kåfjord Nappe occurred at 580&amp;ndash;605<span class="thinspace"></span>°C and 9.2&amp;ndash;10.1<span class="thinspace"></span>kbar, indicating a considerable pressure increase during nappe stacking. Gabbro intruded in the Vaddas Nappe at 439<span class="thinspace"></span>±<span class="thinspace"></span>1<span class="thinspace"></span>Ma, synchronously with migmatization in the Nordmannvik Nappe. In the Vaddas Nappe S2 shearing occurred at 630&amp;ndash;640<span class="thinspace"></span>ºC and 11.7&amp;ndash;13<span class="thinspace"></span>kbar. Titanite growth along the lower RNC boundary records S2-shearing at 432<span class="thinspace"></span>±<span class="thinspace"></span>6<span class="thinspace"></span>Ma. It emerges that early Silurian heating (~<span class="thinspace"></span>440<span class="thinspace"></span>Ma), probably resulting from large-scale magma underplating, initiated partial melting that weakened the lower crust, which facilitated dismembering of the crust into individual nappe units. This tectonic style contrasts subduction of mechanically strong continental crust to great depths.</p>
