Sp(3,R) Monge geometries in dimension 8 [article]

Ian Anderson, Pawel Nurowski
2016 arXiv   pre-print
We study a geometry associated with rank 3 distributions in dimension 8, whose symbol algebra is constant and has a simple Lie algebra sp(3,R) as Tanaka prolongation. We restrict our considerations to only those distributions that are defined in terms of a systems of ODEs of the form ż_ij=∂^2 f(ẋ_1,ẋ_2)/∂ẋ_i∂ẋ_j, i≤ j=1,2. For them we built the full system of local differential invariants, by solving an equivalence problem a'la Cartan, in the spirit of his 1910's five variable paper. The
more » ... red geometry is a parabolic geometry, and we show that its main invariant - the harmonic curvature - is a certain quintic. In the case when this quintic is maximally degenerate but nonzero, we use Cartan's reduction procedure and reduce the EDS governing the invariants to 11, 10 and 9 dimensions. As a byproduct all homogeneous models having maximally degenerate harmonic curvature quintic are found. They have symmetry algebras of dimension 11 (a unique structue), 10 (a 1-parameter family of nonequivalent structures) or 9 (precisely two nonequivalent structures).

Spacetime Groups [article]

Ian Anderson, Charles Torre
2020 arXiv   pre-print
A spacetime group is a connected 4-dimensional Lie group G endowed with a left invariant Lorentz metric h and such that the connected component of the isometry group of h is G itself. The Newman-Penrose formalism is used to give an algebraic classification of spacetime groups, that is, we determine a complete list of inequivalent spacetime Lie algebras, which are pairs (g,η), with g being a 4-dimensional Lie algebra and η being a Lorentzian inner product on g. A full analysis of the equivalence
more » ... problem for spacetime Lie algebras is given which leads to a completely algorithmic solution to the problem of determining when two spacetime Lie algebras are isomorphic. The utility of our classification is demonstrated by a number of applications. The results of a detailed study of the Einstein field equations for various matter fields on spacetime groups are given, which resolve a number of open cases in the literature. The possible Petrov types of spacetime groups that, generically, are algebraically special are completely characterized. Several examples of conformally Einstein spacetime groups are exhibited. Finally, we describe some novel features of a software package created to support the computations and applications of this paper.

Cyclic whist tournaments

Ian Anderson, Normal J. Finizio
1994 Discrete Mathematics
Although the existence of a Whist tournament design Wh(4n) for each n> 1 was established in the 1970s by Baker and Wilson, no new cyclic Wh(4n) was discovered since Moore's 1896 paper until Finizio constructed a number of cyclic designs with 4nS 1000. We now establish the existence of several infinite families of cyclic Wh(4n). (0, 1,295).

Fine-scale distribution of pine ectomycorrhizas and their extramatrical mycelium

David R. Genney, Ian C. Anderson, Ian J. Alexander
2006 New Phytologist
In order to clarify the functional role of individual ectomycorrhizal (EcM) fungal species in the field, we need to relate their abundance and distribution as mycorrhizas to their abundance and distribution as extramatrical mycelium (EMM). • We divided each of four 20 cm × 20 cm × 2 cm slices of pine forest soil into 100 cubes of 2 cm × 2 cm. For each cube, ectomycorrhizas were identified and the presence of EMM of the EcM fungi recorded as ectomycorrhizas was determined by terminal restriction
more » ... fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) analysis of ITS rDNA. • Ectomycorrhizas and EMM of seven EcM species were mapped. Spatial segregation of mycorrhizas and EMM was evident and some species produced their EMM in different soil layers from their mycorrhizas. • The spatial relationship between mycorrhizas and their EMM generally conformed to their reported exploration types, but EMM of smooth types (e.g. Lactarius rufus ) was more frequent than expected. Different EcM fungi foraged at different spatial scales.
