Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a major type of liver cancer caused by the hepatitis B and C viruses, alcohol and exposure to aflatoxin. For HCC treatment, anticancer drugs have been widely used, but drug resistance in advanced HCC is an important problem, resulting in a continuous need for novel therapeutic targets. more »... ransferase 1). In the prognostic analysis, the overexpression of PRMT1 was clearly associated with poor prognosis in a number of HCC patient cohorts. Moreover, after PRMT1 knockdown, HCC cell lines exhibited cell growth and spheroid formation suppression, an increase in Sub-G1 cells by FACS analysis, and enrichment of the cell cycle pathway via functional enrichment analysis. With these results, we demonstrated that PRMT1 could be a novel prognostic marker and therapeutic target for HCC therapy.

This study represents the first epidemiological study based on the national registry of primary immunodeficiencies (PID) in Korea. Patient data were collected from 23 major hospitals. A total of 152 patients with PID (under 19 yr of age), who were observed from 2001 to 2005, have been entered in this registry. The period prevalence of PID in Korea in 2005 is 11.25 per million children. Congenital agammaglobulinemia (n = 21) and selective IgA deficiency (n = 21) were the most frequently reported antibody deficiency. Other reported deficiencies were common variable immunodeficiencies (n = 16), X-linked agammaglobulinemia (n = 15), IgG subclass deficiency (n = 4). Phagocytic disorder was mostly chronic granulomatous disease. A small number of patients with Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome, hyper-IgE syndrome, and severe combined immunodeficiency were also registered. Overall, the most common first manifestation was pneumonia. This study provides data that permit a more accurate estimation PID patients in Korea.
Placental chorioangioma is the most common non-trophoblastic and hamartoma-like tumor and has generally good prognosis if the size is small. Here, we report a case of a huge chorioangioma, sized 7×5 cm with thrombo-occlusion in the placenta associated with neonatal stroke. Perinatal stroke and giant placental chorioangioma are each very rare. Moreover, the combination is extremely rare as is expected. Our case implicates that placental examination should be considered as an important diagnostic workup in cases of perinatal stroke with unknown etiology.

Epidemics of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) now have more than 100,000 confirmed cases worldwide. Diagnosis of COVID-19 is currently performed by RT-qPCR methods, but the capacity of RT-qPCR methods is limited by its requirement of high-level facilities and instruments. Here, we developed and evaluated RT-LAMP assays to detect genomic RNA of SARS-CoV-2, the causative virus of COVID-19. RT-LAMP assays in this study can detect as low as 100 copies of SARS-CoV-2 RNA. more »... dverse pregnancy outcome consisted of preeclampsia (PE), preterm birth (<32 weeks), low birth weight and fetal death in utero. Results We confirmed high levels of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), and inhibin A are associated with development of PE, preterm birth, and low birth weight. In general, 95 percentile cutoff corresponded similarly with 2.0 MoM except AFP. Combination of serum markers increased the odds ratio for predicting adverse pregnancy outcome. The women with higher level of both AFP and inhibin A (2.0 ≥ MoM) had 9.8 times higher risk for PE, 24.8 times higher risk for preterm birth, and 5.6 times higher risk for low birth weight. The women with higher level of AFP, hCG, and inhibin A had 8.2 times higher risk for PE, 29.4 times higher risk for preterm birth. Notably, negative predictive value of serum markers for PE and preterm birth are over 98% either in alone and in combination. Conclusion Maternal serum makers either in alone and in combination offer valuable information on the risk assessment of adverse pregnancy outcome.

Breast cancer (BRC) is the most invasive cancer in women. Our experimental findings and previous theoretical studies suggest that hydroxyl functional groups in GO mainly contribute to Langevin paramagnetism, carboxyl functional groups in RGO1 act as the source for Pauli paramagnetism, and sp2 bonding state in RGO2 plays a major role on the diamagnetism. Especially in terms of mass production, the magnetic data is useful for decomposing the chemical bonding electronic states in graphene-like samples and judging their quality.
