Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a major type of liver cancer caused by the hepatitis B and C viruses, alcohol and exposure to aflatoxin. For HCC treatment, anticancer drugs have been widely used, but drug resistance in advanced HCC is an important problem, resulting in a continuous need for novel therapeutic targets. Therefore, in this study, we established a screening pipeline based on RNA-seq to screen novel therapeutic/prognostic targets in HCC and identified PRMT1 (Protein Arginine
more » ... ransferase 1). In the prognostic analysis, the overexpression of PRMT1 was clearly associated with poor prognosis in a number of HCC patient cohorts. Moreover, after PRMT1 knockdown, HCC cell lines exhibited cell growth and spheroid formation suppression, an increase in Sub-G1 cells by FACS analysis, and enrichment of the cell cycle pathway via functional enrichment analysis. With these results, we demonstrated that PRMT1 could be a novel prognostic marker and therapeutic target for HCC therapy.

2006 Lecture Notes in Computer Science
IP-based IMT Network Platform(IP 2 ) is an ubiquitous platform supporting mobility using two step IP address mode converting -IP host address(IPha) and IP routing address(IPra) -in a backbone network. Mobile Node(MN) in IP 2 maintains its state as either active or dormant state, which is transferred to active state through Paging process when communication is required. In this paper, we proposed a Paging method using agent to resolve the problem of the conventional Paging method which transmits

Performance evaluation of the proposed method using NS-2 showed that the usage of network resources becomes more efficient by reducing Paging loads, especially under the condition of increased nodes.

This study represents the first epidemiological study based on the national registry of primary immunodeficiencies (PID) in Korea. Patient data were collected from 23 major hospitals. A total of 152 patients with PID (under 19 yr of age), who were observed from 2001 to 2005, have been entered in this registry. The period prevalence of PID in Korea in 2005 is 11.25 per million children. The following frequencies were found: antibody deficiencies, 53.3% (n = 81), phagocytic disorders, 28.9% (n =
more » ... 4); combined immunodeficiencies, 13.2% (n = 20); and T cell deficiencies, 4.6% (n = 7). Congenital agammaglobulinemia (n = 21) and selective IgA deficiency (n = 21) were the most frequently reported antibody deficiency. Other reported deficiencies were common variable immunodeficiencies (n = 16), X-linked agammaglobulinemia (n = 15), IgG subclass deficiency (n = 4). Phagocytic disorder was mostly chronic granulomatous disease. A small number of patients with Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome, hyper-IgE syndrome, and severe combined immunodeficiency were also registered. Overall, the most common first manifestation was pneumonia. This study provides data that permit a more accurate estimation PID patients in Korea.

2018 Perinatology
Placental chorioangioma is the most common non-trophoblastic and hamartoma-like tumor and has generally good prognosis if the size is small. The incidence of a placental chorioangioma is an estimated 1% of all deliveries. The size of a chorioangioma is considered significant if it is larger than 4 cm, since fetal compromise can occur due to circulatory overload. Very rarely, a placental chorioangioma can directly exert fetal circulation to cause fetal cerebral ischemic stroke, especially in
more » ... t placental chorioangiomas which are defined as more than 4-5 cm in diameter. Here, we report a case of a huge chorioangioma, sized 7×5 cm with thrombo-occlusion in the placenta associated with neonatal stroke. Perinatal stroke and giant placental chorioangioma are each very rare. Moreover, the combination is extremely rare as is expected. Our case implicates that placental examination should be considered as an important diagnostic workup in cases of perinatal stroke with unknown etiology.

Epidemics of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) now have more than 100,000 confirmed cases worldwide. Diagnosis of COVID-19 is currently performed by RT-qPCR methods, but the capacity of RT-qPCR methods is limited by its requirement of high-level facilities and instruments. Here, we developed and evaluated RT-LAMP assays to detect genomic RNA of SARS-CoV-2, the causative virus of COVID-19. RT-LAMP assays in this study can detect as low as 100 copies of SARS-CoV-2 RNA. Cross-reactivity of

Objective The aim of this study is to assess the risk of adverse pregnancy outcome by maternal serum markers in Quad test and to compare the existing cutoff (2.0 MoM) with 95 percentile cutoff generated from our consecutive population in predicting adverse pregnancy outcome. Methods We generated 95 percentile cutoff as our own reference using 3,000 consecutive women who performed Quad test. Except for follow-up loss, fetal aneuploidy and anomaly, 2,598 women were analyzed for the assessment of
more » ... dverse pregnancy outcome consisted of preeclampsia (PE), preterm birth (<32 weeks), low birth weight and fetal death in utero. Results We confirmed high levels of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), and inhibin A are associated with development of PE, preterm birth, and low birth weight. In general, 95 percentile cutoff corresponded similarly with 2.0 MoM except AFP. Combination of serum markers increased the odds ratio for predicting adverse pregnancy outcome. The women with higher level of both AFP and inhibin A (2.0 ≥ MoM) had 9.8 times higher risk for PE, 24.8 times higher risk for preterm birth, and 5.6 times higher risk for low birth weight. The women with higher level of AFP, hCG, and inhibin A had 8.2 times higher risk for PE, 29.4 times higher risk for preterm birth. Notably, negative predictive value of serum markers for PE and preterm birth are over 98% either in alone and in combination. Conclusion Maternal serum makers either in alone and in combination offer valuable information on the risk assessment of adverse pregnancy outcome.

2019 BMB Reports
Breast cancer (BRC) is the most invasive cancer in women. Although the survival rate of BRC is gradually increasing due to improved screening systems, development of novel therapeutic targets for inhibition of BRC proliferation, metastasis and recurrence have been constantly needed. Thus, in this study, we identified overexpression of SETDB1 (SET Domain Bifurcated 1), a histone methyltransferase, in RNA-seq data of BRC derived from TCGA portal. In Gene Ontology (GO) analysis, cell

Moreover, gene network analysis showed that SMAD7 expression is regulated by SETDB1 levels, indicating that up-regulation of SMAD7 by SETDB1 knockdown inhibited BRC metastasis. Therefore, development of SETDB1 inhibitors and functional studies may help develop more effective clinical guidelines for BRC treatment.

2017 arXiv   pre-print
The reduction of graphene oxide is one of the most facile methods to fabricate a large amount of graphene and the reduction rate of graphene oxide is related with the quality of synthesized graphene for its possible application. The reduction rate is usually determined by using various spectroscopy measurements such as Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Here we propose that the magnetic data can be used as a means of determining
more » ... quality of graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) by the investigation of close relation between magnetic moment and chemical bonding state. Our experimental findings and previous theoretical studies suggest that hydroxyl functional groups in GO mainly contribute to Langevin paramagnetism, carboxyl functional groups in RGO1 act as the source for Pauli paramagnetism, and sp2 bonding state in RGO2 plays a major role on the diamagnetism. Especially in terms of mass production, the magnetic data is useful for decomposing the chemical bonding electronic states in graphene-like samples and judging their quality.
