We report an experimental observation of the optical transparency enhancement resonances in Hanleelectromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) configuration with a microwave field excitation. In this experimental system, a strong control field and a weak probe field form three-level Λ-type configurations of EIT. The fourth level is coupled by an additional microwave field. Quantile Regression Modeling of Recurrent Event Risk [article]

Progression of chronic disease is often manifested by repeated occurrences of disease-related events over time. Delineating the heterogeneity in the risk of such recurrent events can provide valuable scientific insight for guiding customized disease management. In this paper, we present a new modeling framework for recurrent event data, which renders a flexible and robust characterization of individual multiplicative risk of recurrent event through quantile regression that accommodates both
more » ... rved covariates and unobservable frailty. The proposed modeling requires no distributional specification of the unobservable frailty, while permitting the exploration of dynamic covariate effects. We develop estimation and inference procedures for the proposed model through a novel adaptation of the principle of conditional score. The asymptotic properties of the proposed estimator, including the uniform consistency and weak convergence, are established. Extensive simulation studies demonstrate satisfactory finite-sample performance of the proposed method. We illustrate the practical utility of the new method via an application to a diabetes clinical trial that explores the risk patterns of hypoglycemia in Type 2 diabetes patients.

Folding of Tubular Waterbomb

Origami has recently emerged as a promising building block of mechanical metamaterials because it offers a purely geometric design approach independent of scale and constituent material. The folding mechanics of origami-inspired metamaterials, i.e., whether the deformation involves only rotation of crease lines (rigid origami) or both crease rotation and facet distortion (nonrigid origami), is critical for fine-tuning their mechanical properties yet very difficult to determine for origami
more » ... ns with complex behaviors. Here, we characterize the folding of tubular waterbomb using a combined kinematic and structural analysis. We for the first time uncover that a waterbomb tube can undergo a mixed mode involving both rigid origami motion and nonrigid structural deformation, and the transition between them can lead to a substantial change in the stiffness. Furthermore, we derive theoretically the range of geometric parameters for the transition to occur, which paves the road to program the mechanical properties of the waterbomb pattern. We expect that such analysis and design approach will be applicable to more general origami patterns to create innovative programmable metamaterials, serving for a wide range of applications including aerospace systems, soft robotics, morphing structures, and medical devices.

Softening Characterization of 300M High-Strength Steel during Post-Dynamic Recrystallization

This paper investigates softening phenomena within the post-dynamic recrystallization (PDRX) process in 300M high-strength steel specimens with different initial dynamically recrystallized volume fractions. Isothermal, interrupted compression experiments were performed on a Gleeble-3500 at a temperature of 1273 K and strain rate of 0.01 s −1 . The softening behaviors respectively caused by the static recrystallization (SRX) and metadynamic recrystallization (MDRX) were qualitatively characterized by variations in the mechanical properties of the deformed and recrystallized grains. On the basis of the Taylor dislocation model, the evolution of geometric necessary dislocations (GNDs) and statistically stored dislocations (SSDs) densities were also discussed to qualitatively clarify the nature of different softening behaviors. Results indicate that the SRX occurred alone in samples without initial DRX grains, after an incubation time of approximately 50 s, while MDRX initially appeared within 1 s and completed at about 8 s in samples with a high initial volume fraction of DRX grains. The microhardness, indentation hardness, and Young's modulus in the deformed and recrystallized grains decreased gradually with an increase of MDRX and SRX volume fractions. The sink-in and pile-up phenomena were enhanced by the SRX and MDRX softening processes, respectively. The SSDs density decreased more noticeably during the MDRX process than that during the SRX, which indicates that the MDRX process contributed to a more significant softening effect within the microstructural evolution regimes.

Finite-Time Lyapunov Functions and Impulsive Control Design

In this paper, we introduce finite-time Lyapunov functions for impulsive systems. The relaxed sufficient conditions for asymptotic stability of an equilibrium of an impulsive system are given via finite-time Lyapunov functions. A converse finite-time Lyapunov theorem for controlling the impulsive system is proposed. Three examples are presented to show how to analyze the stability of an equilibrium of the considered impulsive system via finite-time Lyapunov functions. Furthermore, according to

However, the folding behavior of most general origami structures is very difficult to analyze because of the lack of theoretical model and analysis methodology for the complex mobile assemblies of spherical linkages. This paper focuses on the widely-used Waterbomb origami tubes. Based on the kinematics and compatibility of spherical linkages, the rigid folding behavior of generalized Waterbomb tubes was systematically analyzed with analytical kinematics equations to describe their rigid contract and twist motion. The effect of various geometrical parameters on the rigid folding behaviour, bifurcation property as well as physical blockages of the Waterbomb origami tube was studied. This work lays a theoretical foundation for the design and control of programmable metamaterials, deformable structures, and robots based on Waterbomb origami tubes, while such kinematic model can be readily applied to other origami patterns. High contrast transparent Ramsey fringes are observed using double microwave pulses interaction with the prepared atomic coherent state in a warm 87 Rb vapor with mixture buffer gases in a closed cell. The Ramsey fringes are generated by the pulsed technique, a strong coupling light pulse and a weak signal light pulse are applied to prepare the atomic coherent state, followed by the application of double microwave pulses to interact with the atomic coherent state. The central line of the transparent Ramsey fringes has narrow linewidth of 125 Hz and high contrast of 21%. The light shift is dramatically reduced since the interrogating process is not involved the light field, and the cavity pulling effect is negligible due to the low Q requirement, which is promising for building small, compact, and stable atomic clocks.

In this paper, we propose a novel clustering model to solve this general problem of herb categorization, a pivotal task of prescription optimization and herb regularities. Ainsi, la représentation des valeurs esthétiques du texte original doit être considérée comme l'objectif ultime de la traduction littéraire. Le présent article se fonde, sur le plan théorique, sur les éléments esthétiques formels et non formels de la littérature classifiés par le traductologue chinois Liu Miqing ainsi que par la philologie chinoise traditionnelle et la stylistique littéraire moderne. Il explore en détail les méthodes de représentation des valeurs esthétiques littéraires sous deux angles, soit les marques esthétiques formelles et les marques esthétiques non formelles. Il révèle que, puisque dans une oeuvre littéraire les marques formelles et non formelles sont vraiment inséparables, une combinaison adéquate de celles-ci peut produire une solution satisfaisante. ABSTRACT The beauty of literary translation is determined by the artistic nature of the original work. Therefore, how to represent its aesthetic values should be considered the ultimate objective of literary translation. This paper, which is theoretically based on formal and nonformal aesthetic constituents of literature classified by the Chinese translation theorist Liu Miqing as well as traditional Chinese philology and modern literature stylistics, discusses extensively how to succeed in representing aesthetic values of literary works from two aspects, i.e., formal aesthetic markers and non-formal aesthetic markers. It also points out that since in a literary work formal markers and non-formal markers are really inseparable, the proper combination of the two can provide a satisfactory solution.

Impact of Diabetic Ketoacidosis on Thyroid Function in Patients with Diabetes Mellitus

Background. Changes in thyroid function in diabetes patients who developed diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) still need to be fully elucidated. The aim of this study was to systematically review available data on the relationship between thyroid function and DKA in diabetes patients who developed DKA. Methods. Electronic databases (PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and China Academic Journal Full-text Database (CNKI)) were searched systematically to search relevant literature before December 2020.
more » ... mean ± standard deviation and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) were used for evaluation, and sensitivity analysis was performed. Publication bias was estimated by funnel plot, Egger's test, and Begger's test. Results. 29 studies were included in the meta-analysis, and the indicators (T4, T3, FT3, FT4, TSH, T3RU, and rT3) of patients with DKA were compared and analyzed. The results of this study showed that the levels of T4, T3, FT3, FT4, and TSH were decreased and the level of rT3 was increased in patients with DKA. Compared with after treatment, the levels of T4, T3, FT3, and FT4 in patients with DKA were decreased before treatment, while the levels of rT3 were increased, and there was no significant difference in changes of TSH. With the aggravation of DKA, the levels of T4, T3, FT3, and FT4 will further decrease, while the changes of TSH have no statistical difference. Conclusion. Thyroid function changed in diabetic patients with DKA. It changed with the severity of DKA. This condition may be transient, preceding further recovery of DKA.

more » ... on path. Four types of square-twist origami patterns are analyzed, among which two are found rigidly foldable, while the other two are not. The explicit kinematic equations of the rigid cases are derived based on the kinematic equivalence between the rigid origami pattern and the closed-loop network of spherical 4R linkages. We also propose a crease-addition method to convert the rigid foldability of the non-rigid patterns. The motion compatibility conditions of the modified patterns are checked, which verify the rigid foldability of the modified patterns. The kinematic analysis reveals the bifurcation behaviour of the modified patterns. This work not only helps to deepen our understanding on the rigid foldability of origami patterns and its relationship with the M-V assignments, but also provides us an effective way to create more rigidly foldable origami patterns from non rigid ones.
