Higher Order Recurrent Neural Networks [article]

In this paper, we study novel neural network structures to better model long term dependency in sequential data. We propose to use more memory units to keep track of more preceding states in recurrent neural networks (RNNs), which are all recurrently fed to the hidden layers as feedback through different weighted paths. By extending the popular recurrent structure in RNNs, we provide the models with better short-term memory mechanism to learn long term dependency in sequences. Analogous to
more &raquo; ... al filters in signal processing, we call these structures as higher order RNNs (HORNNs). Similar to RNNs, HORNNs can also be learned using the back-propagation through time method. HORNNs are generally applicable to a variety of sequence modelling tasks. In this work, we have examined HORNNs for the language modeling task using two popular data sets, namely the Penn Treebank (PTB) and English text8 data sets. Experimental results have shown that the proposed HORNNs yield the state-of-the-art performance on both data sets, significantly outperforming the regular RNNs as well as the popular LSTMs.

This paper addresses the following simple question about sparsity. For the estimation of an n-dimensional mean vector θ in the Gaussian sequence model, is it possible to find an adaptive optimal threshold estimator in a full range of sparsity levels where nonadaptive optimality can be achieved by threshold estimators? We provide an explicit affirmative answer as follows. Under the squared loss, adaptive minimaxity in strong and weak ℓ_p balls with 0< p<2 is achieved by a class of smooth
more &raquo; ... d estimators with the threshold level of the Benjamini-Hochberg FDR rule or its a certain approximation, provided that the minimax risk is between n^-δ_n and δ_n n for some δ_n→ 0. For p=0, this means adaptive minimaxity in ℓ_0 balls when 1<θ_0≪ n. The class of smooth threshold estimators includes the soft and firm threshold estimators but not the hard threshold estimator. The adaptive minimaxity in such a wide range is a delicate problem since the same is not true for the FDR hard threshold estimator at certain threshold and nominal FDR levels. The above adaptive minimaxity of the FDR smooth-threshold estimator is established by proving a stronger notion of adaptive ratio optimality for the soft threshold estimator in the sense that the risk for the FDR threshold level is uniformly within an infinitesimal fraction of the risk for the optimal threshold level for each unknown vector, when the minimum risk of nonadaptive soft threshold estimator is between n^-δ_n and δ_n n. It is an interesting consequence of this adaptive ratio optimality that the FDR smooth-threshold estimator outperforms the sample mean in the common mean model θ_i=μ when |μ|<n^-1/2.

Two highly birefringent polymer terahertz (THz) fibers were proposed in this paper, which were formed with honeycomb cladding and some elliptical air holes in the fiber core. The losses and mode birefringence for two different fibers are investigated by finite-different time-domain method. The results show that fiber 2 can achieve both high birefringence (larger than 0.022) and low confinement loss (0.01 dB/m) in a wide THz frequency range. A graph is said to be total-colored if all the edges and the vertices of the graph is colored. A path in a total-colored graph is a total proper path if (i) any two adjacent edges on the path differ in color, (ii) any two internal adjacent vertices on the path differ in color, and (iii) any internal vertex of the path differs in color from its incident edges on the path. A total-colored graph is called total-proper connected if any two vertices of the graph are connected by a total proper path

For a connected graph G, the total proper connection number of G, denoted by tpc(G), is defined as the smallest number of colors required to make G total-proper connected. These concepts are inspired by the concepts of proper connection number pc(G), proper vertex connection number pvc(G) and total rainbow connection number trc(G) of a connected graph G. In this paper, we first determine the value of the total proper connection number tpc(G) for some special graphs G. Secondly, we obtain that tpc(G)≤ 4 for any 2-connected graph G and give examples to show that the upper bound 4 is sharp. For general graphs, we also obtain an upper bound for tpc(G). Furthermore, we prove that tpc(G)≤3n/δ+1+1 for a connected graph G with order n and minimum degree δ. Finally, we compare tpc(G) with pvc(G) and pc(G), respectively, and obtain that tpc(G)>pvc(G) for any nontrivial connected graph G, and that tpc(G) and pc(G) can differ by t for 0≤ t≤ 2.

A graph is said to be total-colored if all the edges and the vertices of the graph are colored. A path in a total-colored graph is a total monochromatic path if all the edges and internal vertices on the path have the same color. A total-coloring of a graph is a total monochromatically-connecting coloring ( TMC-coloring, for short) if any two vertices of the graph are connected by a total monochromatic path of the graph. For a connected graph G, the total monochromatic connection number,
more &raquo; ... by tmc(G), is defined as the maximum number of colors used in a TMC-coloring of G. These concepts are inspired by the concepts of monochromatic connection number mc(G), monochromatic vertex connection number mvc(G) and total rainbow connection number trc(G) of a connected graph G. Let l(T) denote the number of leaves of a tree T, and let l(G)={ l(T) | T is a spanning tree of G } for a connected graph G. In this paper, we show that there are many graphs G such that tmc(G)=m-n+2+l(G), and moreover, we prove that for almost all graphs G, tmc(G)=m-n+2+l(G) holds. Furthermore, we compare tmc(G) with mvc(G) and mc(G), respectively, and obtain that there exist graphs G such that tmc(G) is not less than mvc(G) and vice versa, and that tmc(G)=mc(G)+l(G) holds for almost all graphs. Finally, we prove that tmc(G)≤ mc(G)+mvc(G), and the equality holds if and only if G is a complete graph.

MicroRNA-29a Promotes Pancreatic Cancer Growth by Inhibiting Tristetraprolin

Background/Aims: The microRNA (miR) 29 family has been studied extensively for its involvement in several diseases, and aberrant expression of its members is associated with tumorigenesis and cancer progression. Here, we examined the role of miR-29a in pancreatic cancer and the involvement of tristetraprolin (TTP). Methods: We monitored miR-29a and TTP expression in pancreatic cancer by qRT-PCR and western blotting. The effect of miR-29a on pancreatic cancer was determined through MTT assay and

Results: We found that miR-29a was up regulated in pancreatic tumor tissues and cell lines and positively correlated with metastasis. Ectopic expression of miR-29a increased the expression of pro-inflammatory factors and epithelialmesenchymal transition (EMT) markers, through down regulating TTP. TTP was down regulated in tumor tissues, and its ectopic expression decreased cell viability and migration in vitro, inhibited tumor growth and the EMT phenotype in vivo, and reversed the effect of miR-29a on tumor cell proliferation and invasion in vitro and in vivo. Conclusion: Our results suggest that miR-29a acts as an oncogene by down regulating TTP and provide the basis for further studies exploring the potential of miR-29a and TTP as biomarkers and targets for the treatment of pancreatic cancer. (F) The expression of EMT markers was assessed by western blotting in miR-29a or TTP expressing cells. * and #, p <0.05. cancer, such as mRNAs encoding angiogenic inducers including VEGF, and invasion related proteins such as matrix metalloproteinase 1 and the urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA) and its co-activating receptor uPAR, and the hypoxia-related factors [37] . Although many drugs have been applied in pancreatic cancer treatment [38, 39] , the mortality of pancreatic cancer is still high. Therefore, it is urgent to develop new targets for cancer intervention. In the present study, we showed that miR-29a is up regulated and TTP is down regulated in pancreatic cancer cell lines and tissues, and miR-29a promotes tumor cell proliferation and the EMT phenotype by modulating TTP expression. The present findings linking miR-29a to the regulation of TTP expression in pancreatic cancer identify potential novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets and provide the basis for future studies aimed at exploring the effects of the modulation of TTP expression as a potential therapeutic strategy in cancer.

Maternal valproic acid exposure leads to neurogenesis defects and autism-like behaviors in non-human primates

Despite the substantial progress made in identifying genetic defects in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), the etiology for majority of ASD individuals remains elusive. Maternal exposure to valproic acid (VPA), a commonly prescribed antiepileptic drug during pregnancy in human, has long been considered a risk factor to contribute to ASD susceptibility in offspring from epidemiological studies in humans. more &raquo; ... rom human epidemiology. However, the apparent difference between rodent and human poses a significant challenge to extrapolate the findings from rodent models to humans. Here we report for the first time the neurodevelopmental and behavioral outcomes of maternal VPA exposure in non-human primates. Monkey offspring from the early maternal VPA exposure have significantly reduced NeuN-positive mature neurons in prefrontal cortex (PFC) and cerebellum and the Ki67-positive proliferating neuronal precursors in the cerebellar external granular layer, but increased GFAP-positive astrocytes in PFC. Transcriptome analyses revealed that maternal VPA exposure disrupted the expression of genes associated with neurodevelopment in embryonic brain in offspring. VPA-exposed juvenile offspring have variable presentations of impaired social interaction, pronounced stereotypies, and more attention on nonsocial stimuli by eye tracking analysis. Our findings in non-human primates provide the best evidence so far to support causal link between maternal VPA exposure and neurodevelopmental defects and ASD susceptibility in humans.

Haemin-enhanced expression of haem oxygenase-1 stabilizes erythrocyte-induced vulnerable atherosclerotic plaques

and purpose: Previous studies demonstrated that intraplaque haemorrhage increased the contents of cholesterol and oxidants in atherosclerotic plaques. The present study was aimed to test the hypothesis that enhanced expression of haem oxygenase-1 (HO-1) may stabilize vulnerable plaques. Experimental approach: Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) was performed to identify three similar abdominal aortic plaques in each of 58 fat-fed New Zealand rabbits after aortic balloon injury. IVUS, 50 mL autologous erythrocytes (RBC) or normal saline (NS) were injected from adventitia into two of the pre-selected plaques, respectively, whereas the third plaque served as a blank control. All rabbits were randomly divided into two groups, receiving intraperitoneal injection of haemin and saline respectively. Key results: Compared with NS or control plaques, RBC plaques had more macrophage infiltration and lipid content, thinner plaque fibrous cap, and higher expression of inflammatory factors and incidence of plaque rupture. RBC plaques in the haemin group had about a 50% lower incidence of plaque rupture than those in the control group. Conclusions and implications: Haem oxygenase-1 may eliminate haem or other oxidants, exert unexpected anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory effects and serve as a promising approach to the direct inhibition of erythrocyte-induced plaque instability.

Strong decays of D_3^∗(2760), D_s3^∗(2860), B_3^∗, and B_s3^∗ [article]

In this paper, we study the OZI-allowed two-body strong decays of 3^- heavy-light mesons. Experimentally the charmed D_3^∗(2760) and the charm-strange D_s3^∗(2860) states with these quantum numbers have been discovered. For the bottomed B(5970) state, which was found by the CDF Collaboration recently, its quantum number has not been decided yet and we assume its a 3^- meson in this paper. The theoretical prediction for the strong decays of bottom-strange state B_s3^∗ is also given. The
more &raquo; ... tic wave functions of 3^- heavy mesons are constructed and their numerical values are obtained by solving the corresponding Bethe-Salpeter equation with instantaneous approximation. The transition matrix is calculated by using the PCAC and low energy theorem, following which, the decay widths are obtained. For D_3^∗(2760) and D_s3^∗(2860), the total strong decay widths are 72.6 MeV and 47.6 MeV, respectively. For B_3^∗ with M=5978 MeV and B_s3^∗ with M=6178 MeV, their strong decay widths are 22.9 MeV and 40.8 MeV, respectively.
