Knowledge is indispensable to understanding. The ongoing information explosion highlights the need to enable machines to better understand electronic text in human language. Much work has been devoted to creating universal ontologies or taxonomies for this purpose. However, none of the existing ontologies has the needed depth and breadth for "universal understanding". In this paper, we present a universal, probabilistic taxonomy that is more comprehensive than any existing ones. It contains 2.7

Unlike traditional taxonomies that treat knowledge as black and white, it uses probabilities to model inconsistent, ambiguous and uncertain information it contains. We present details of how the taxonomy is constructed, its probabilistic modeling, and its potential applications in text understanding.

2020 arXiv   pre-print
With the prosperous of cross-border e-commerce, there is an urgent demand for designing intelligent approaches for assisting e-commerce sellers to offer local products for consumers from all over the world. In this paper, we explore a new task of cross-lingual information retrieval, i.e., cross-lingual set-to-description retrieval in cross-border e-commerce, which involves matching product attribute sets in the source language with persuasive product descriptions in the target language. We
more » ... lly collect a new and high-quality paired dataset, where each pair contains an unordered product attribute set in the source language and an informative product description in the target language. As the dataset construction process is both time-consuming and costly, the new dataset only comprises of 13.5k pairs, which is a low-resource setting and can be viewed as a challenging testbed for model development and evaluation in cross-border e-commerce. To tackle this cross-lingual set-to-description retrieval task, we propose a novel cross-lingual matching network (CLMN) with the enhancement of context-dependent cross-lingual mapping upon the pre-trained monolingual BERT representations. Experimental results indicate that our proposed CLMN yields impressive results on the challenging task and the context-dependent cross-lingual mapping on BERT yields noticeable improvement over the pre-trained multi-lingual BERT model.

Identification of a novel MYO7A mutation in Usher syndrome type 1

Ling Cheng, Hongsong Yu, Yan Jiang, Juan He, Sisi Pu, Xin Li, Li Zhang
2017 OncoTarget
Usher syndrome (USH) is an autosomal recessive disease characterized by deafness and retinitis pigmentosa. In view of the high phenotypic and genetic heterogeneity in USH, performing genetic screening with traditional methods is impractical. In the present study, we carried out targeted next-generation sequencing (NGS) to uncover the underlying gene in an USH family (2 USH patients and 15 unaffected relatives). One hundred and thirty-five genes associated with inherited retinal degeneration
more » ... selected for deep exome sequencing. Subsequently, variant analysis, Sanger validation and segregation tests were utilized to identify the disease-causing mutations in this family. All affected individuals had a classic USH type I (USH1) phenotype which included deafness, vestibular dysfunction and retinitis pigmentosa. Targeted NGS and Sanger sequencing validation suggested that USH1 patients carried an unreported splice site mutation, c.5168+1G>A, as a compound heterozygous mutation with c.6070C>T (p.R2024X) in the MYO7A gene. A functional study revealed decreased expression of the MYO7A gene in the individuals carrying heterozygous mutations. In conclusion, targeted next-generation sequencing provided a comprehensive and efficient diagnosis for USH1. This study revealed the genetic defects in the MYO7A gene and expanded the spectrum of clinical phenotypes associated with USH1 mutations.

2006 Optical Engineering: The Journal of SPIE
We describe an automated three-axis BRDF measurement instrument that can help increase the physical realism of computer graphics images by providing light scattering data for the surfaces within a synthetic scene that is to be rendered. To our knowledge, the instrument is unique in combining wide angular coverage (beyond 85° from the surface normal), dense sampling of the visible wavelength spectrum (1024 samples), and rapid operation (less than ten hours for complete measurement of an
more » ... sample). The gonioreflectometer employs a broadband light source and a detector with a diffraction grating and linear diode array. Validation was achieved by comparisons against reference surfaces and other instruments. The accuracy and spectral and angular ranges of the BRDFs are appropriate for computer graphics imagery, while reciprocity and energy conservation are preserved. Measured BRDFs on rough aluminum, metallic silver automotive paint, and a glossy yellow paint are reported, and an example rendered automotive image is included.

PRODUCTION FUNCTION ESTIMATION WITH UNOBSERVED INPUT PRICE DISPERSION

Paul L. E. Grieco, Shengyu Li, Hongsong Zhang
2016 International Economic Review
We propose a method to consistently estimate production functions in the presence of input price dispersion when intermediate input quantities are not observed. The traditional approach to dealing with unobserved input quantities-using deflated expenditure as a proxy-requires strong assumptions for consistency. Instead, we control for heterogeneous input prices by exploiting the first order conditions of the firm's profit maximization problem. Our approach applies to a wide class of production
more » ... unctions and can be extended to accommodate a variety of heterogeneous intermediate input types. A Monte Carlo study illustrates that the omitted price bias is significant in the traditional approach, while our method consistently recovers the production function parameters. We apply our method to a firm-level data set from Colombian manufacturing industries. The empirical results are consistent with the prediction that the use of expenditure as a proxy for quantities biases the elasticity of substitution downward. Moreover, using our preferred method, we provide evidence of significant input price dispersion and even wider productivity dispersion than is estimated using proxy methods.

2013 Transactions of the Association for Computational Linguistics
Recognizing metaphors and identifying the source-target mappings is an important task as metaphorical text poses a big challenge for machine reading. To address this problem, we automatically acquire a metaphor knowledge base and an isA knowledge base from billions of web pages. Using the knowledge bases, we develop an inference mechanism to recognize and explain the metaphors in the text. To our knowledge, this is the first purely datadriven approach of probabilistic metaphor acquisition,

This paper gives a partially-sharing nonces attack on SM2 Digital Signature Algorithm (SM2DSA). Templates, which are built in the scenario of no secrets known, are used to detect the collisions on the Most Significant Byte of the Nonces (MSBN). Targeting a real world smartcard with 8bit precharged bus, the power consumption of data moving procedure after the random number generation is focused, on which the template building and matching phases are based. With the templates, we obtain a number

To optimize thermophysical performances, Sm3TaO7 was doped with Lu3+ and pressureless sintered at 1600 ?C. It was shown that Sm3+ is partly substituted by Lu3+ cations and the (Sm1-xLux)3TaO7 ceramics with a single pyrochlore structure are obtained. With increasing x value from 0 to 0.5, the band gap increases gradually from 4.677 to 4.880 eV. Owing to the enhanced phonon scattering caused by Lu3+ doping, the thermal conductivities at 800 ?C of the prepared samples are in the range of

Due to the reduction of crystal lattice energy and average electro-negativity difference, the thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) is heightened with increasing Lu content. TEC achieves the highest value (10.45 ? 10?6 K?1 at 1200 ?C) at the equal molar ratio between Sm3+ and Lu3+ cations (i.e. x = 0.5), which is much higher than those of 7YSZ and Sm2Zr2O7 ceramics.

A Dynamic Multiple Watermarking Algorithm Based on DWT and HVS

Li Zhang, Xilan Yan, Hongsong Li, Minrong Chen
2012 International Journal of Communications, Network and System Sciences
In this paper, a dynamic robust multiple watermarking algorithm is proposed based on Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) and Human Visual System (HVS). Watermark image is transformed by Arnold transform. Original image is divided into blocks with 8 by 8 and each block is transformed by DWT. By adopting the Just Noticeable Difference (JND) of HVS and changing low frequency coefficients, binary string message can be embedded into the decomposed original image. Watermark can be extracted blindly.
