We performed a comparative study of the superconducting gap in the new filled skutterudite superconductors LaPt 4 Ge 12 and PrPt 4 Ge 12 using high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy. We succeeded in observing spectral changes across T c that reflect the opening of the superconducting gap in both compounds and also in observing a noticeable difference in their respective superconducting spectral shapes near the Fermi level, pointing toward a more complex superconducting gap structure in PrPtdoi:10.1103/physrevb.86.014521 fatcat:tsxpu43ujzhcxotjvmmlgejv6e

In this paper, we present the result of soft x-ray photoemission spectroscopy and its comparison with the density functional calculation. Although local density approximation seems to be a good starting point for describing the electronic structure of FeSe, the simulated spectrum poorly reproduced the structure around E B = 2 eV. We have performed soft x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (SXPES) and resonant photoemission spectroscopy (RPES) of the filled skutterudite superconductor PrPt 4 Ge 12 in order to study the electronic structure of valence band and the character of Pr 4f . Pr 3d → 4f RPES shows that, although Pr 4f electrons in PrPt 4 Ge 12 are not as strongly hybridized with conduction electrons near E F as in PrFe 4 P 12 , there are finite Pr 4f contribution to the states near E F in PrPt 4 Ge 12 . These PES results give the information of fundamental electronic structure for understanding the physical properties of the novel filled skutterudite superconductor PrPt 4 Ge 12 .
This study evaluated heat storage flux or released flux due to biotic activity (S C ) in forests. First, as a case study, we investigated diurnal pattern of S C over an evergreen coniferous forest via a three-year continuous eddy-covariance CO 2 flux measurement. more »... ow-free period. Second, we estimated S C by using net ecosystem exchange over several forest ecosystems as reported by previous studies. During the snow-free period over several forest ecosystems, the maximum Sc and daily amplitude exceed 3-12 and 4-17 W m -2 respectively. Those values were comparable to those of the latent heat storage flux in the air layer from the ground surface to the level of eddy-covariance measurement over several forest ecosystems as shown by previous reports. Our findings suggest that S C cannot be always ignored. We would need to examine whether S C can be ignored based on the circumstances of the targeted research.

Infantile myofibromatosis (IM) is a rare soft tissue tumor of infancy and childhood. We report the case of a newborn girl with an abdominal tumor discovered at 32 weeks of gestation by fetal ultrasound. She underwent a laparotomy for an unexplained abdominal mass 20 days after birth. The tumor originated from the spleen and was removed by splenectomy. There were no other abnormal findings on diagnostic modalities. The boron concentration dependence of the Si electronic structure of Si(100)2×1 surfaces were investigated by angle-resolved photemission spectrosopy (ARPES). The ARPES spectra exhibit rigid shifts toward lower binding energy as the boron concentration increases. AbstractDiabetic nephropathy (DN) is accompanied by characteristic changes in the glomerulus, but little is known about the effect of diabetes on parietal epithelial cells (PECs). In this study, a descriptive analysis of PECs was undertaken in diabetic db/db mice and in diabetic patients. PEC hypertrophy was significantly more prominent in diabetic mice than in nondiabetic mice, and this was evident even at the early stage. In cultured PECs, a high glucose condition, compared with normal glucose condition, induced cellular hypertrophy and apoptosis. Flow cytometry showed that some PECs in the G0 phase reentered the cell cycle but got arrested in the S phase. Finally, in human diabetic subjects, hypertrophy and vacuolization were observed in the PECs. Our data showed that PECs undergo substantial changes in DN and may participate in rearrangement for differentiation into podocytes.
