Wear resistance of cast dental Ti-Fe alloys

Binary Ti-Fe alloys with 5-25 mass% Fe were prepared, and subjected to reciprocating wear test. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between mechanical properties and the wear resistance of titanium and Ti-Fe alloys. The dimensions (length, width and depth) of wear marks on Ti-Fe alloys were less than those observed on pure Ti specimen. Wear resistance of Ti-Fe alloys was better than that of pure titanium. more » ... wear resistance of Ti-Fe alloys. Single β Ti-Fe alloys showed better wear resistance than α+β Ti-Fe alloys. Increase in concentration of Fe in the β phase of Ti-Fe alloys leads to improved wear resistance of the alloy. Ti-Fe alloys with 11-15 mass% Fe form ideal candidates for fabrication of dental titanium alloys with excellent wear resistance.

Influence of Amino Acids on the Mobility of Iodide in Hydrocalumite

In the cement system, hydrocalumite is a candidate adsorbent for low-level 129I anionic species. However, the stability of hydrocalumite after immobilizing I− is unclear when they are exposed to pedosphere characterized by organic substances derived from living organisms. Ion-exchange of Cys2− with I− in I-hydrocalumite was faster than Asp2−, and the interlayer spacing (d003) of Cys-hydrocalumite was smaller than that of Asp-hydrocalumite. DFT simulations not only supported the above results but also predicted that there was a positive correlation between the formation energies and interlayer spacings of amino acids intercalated hydrocalumite, depending on the configurations. Moreover, in the DFT predictions, the interaction between amino acids and metallic hydroxide layers was responsible for the formation of hydrogen bonds and Ca-O chemical bonds between the -COO− groups and [Ca2Al(OH)6]+. The other three amino acids did not show intercalation through ion-exchange. The stability of I-hydrocalumite is influenced differently by coexisting amino acids, depending on the ionic sizes, charge numbers, and hydrophilicity, which cause the second contamination.

This paper reports our investigation of wireless communication performance obtained using orbital angular momentum (OAM) multiplexing, from theoretical evaluation to experimental study. First, we show how we performed a basic theoretical study on wireless OAM multiplexing performance regarding modulation, demodulation, multiplexing, and demultiplexing. This provided a clear picture of the effects of mode attenuation and gave us insight into the potential and limitations of OAM wireless
more » ... tions. Then, we expanded our study to experimental evaluation of a dielectric lens and end-to-end wireless transmission on 28 gigahertz frequency bands. To overcome the beam divergence of OAM multiplexing, we propose a combination of multi-input multi-output (MIMO) and OAM technology, named OAM-MIMO multiplexing. We achieved 45 Gbps (gigabits per second) throughput using OAM multiplexing with five OAM modes. We also experimentally demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed OAM-MIMO multiplexing using a total of 11 OAM modes. Experimental OAM-MIMO multiplexing results reached a new milestone for point-to-point transmission rates when 100 Gbps was achieved at a 10-m transmission distance.

Reduced residual conduction gaps and favourable outcome in contact force-guided circumferential pulmonary vein isolation

Aims Although contact force (CF)-guided circumferential pulmonary vein isolation (CPVI) for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) is useful, AF recurrence at long-term follow-up still remains to be resolved. The purpose of this study was to assess safety and efficacy of CF-guided CPVI and to compare residual conduction gaps during CPVI and long-term outcome between the conventional (non-CF-guided) and the CF-guided CPVI. Methods and results We studied the 50 consecutive PAF patients undergoing
more » ... VI by a ThermoCool EZ Steer catheter (conventional group, mean age 61 + 10 years) and the other 50 consecutive PAF patients by a ThermoCool SmartTouch catheter (CF group, 65 + 11 years). The procedure parameters and residual conduction gaps during CPVI, and long-term outcome for 12 months were compared between the two groups. Circumferential pulmonary vein isolation was successfully accomplished without any major complications in both groups. Total procedure and total fluoroscopy times were both significantly shorter in the CF group than in the conventional group (160 + 30 vs. 245 + 61 min, P , 0.001, and 17 + 8 vs. 54 + 27 min, P , 0.001, respectively). Total number of residual conduction gaps was significantly less in the CF group than in the conventional group (2.7 + 1.7 vs. 6.3 + 2.7, P , 0.05). The AF recurrence-free rates after CPVI during 12-month follow-up were 96% (48/50) in the CF group and 82% (41/50) in the conventional group (P ¼ 0.02 by log rank test). Multivariate Cox regression analysis further supported this finding. Conclusion Contact force-guided CPVI is safe and more effective in reducing not only the procedure time but also the AF recurrence than the conventional CPVI, possibly due to reduced residual conduction gaps during CPVI procedure. ---

Mechanical properties and microstructures of cast dental Ti-Fe alloys

Binary Ti-Fe alloys of varying concentrations of Fe between 5-25% were made, and their castings evaluated in terms of microstructures formed and mechanical properties. The aim of this study was to explore the composition of Ti-Fe alloys that offers improved wear resistance of titanium. X-ray diffraction and microstructural observation revealed that 5-7% Fe, 8-15% Fe, and 20-25% Fe consisted of α+β, single β, and β+TiFe phases, respectively. more » ... o that of Co-Cr alloys but lower than of the other Ti-Fe alloys. Elongation of the Ti-Fe alloys was negligible. However, dimples were observed in specimen containing 7-11% Fe. Alloys with 9% Fe demonstrated the highest strength of more than 850 MPa. We believe that Ti-Fe alloys with 8-11% Fe may be applicable in development of an alloy with good wear resistance due to the exhibited properties of high hardness and ductility albeit low.

Primary cellulitis and cutaneous abscess caused by Yersinia enterocolitica in an immunocompetent host

Primary extraintestinal complications caused by Yersinia enterocolitica are extremely rare, especially in the form of skin and soft-tissue manifestations, and little is known about their clinical characteristics and treatments. We presented our case and reviewed past cases of primary skin and soft-tissue infections caused by Y enterocolitica. She presented to an outpatient clinic with redness, swelling, and pain of the left ring finger and left upper arm without fever or gastrointestinal symptoms 3 days before admission. One day later, ulceration of the skin with exposed bone of the proximal interphalangeal joint of the left ring finger developed, and cefditoren pivoxil was described. However, she was admitted to our hospital due to deterioration of symptoms involving the left finger and upper arm. Cefazolin was initiated on admission, then changed to sulbactam/ampicillin and vancomycin with debridement of the left ring finger and drainage of the left upper arm abscess. Wound culture grew Y enterocolitica serotype O:8 and methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus. Blood cultures were negative and osteomyelitis was ruled out. Vancomycin was switched to ciprofloxacin, then skin and soft-tissue manifestations showed clear improvement within a few days. The patient received 14 days of ciprofloxacin and oral amoxicillin/clavulanate and has since shown no recurrence. We reviewed 12 cases of primary skin and soft-tissue infections caused by Y enterocolitica from the literature. In several past cases, portal entry involved failure of the skin barrier on distal body parts. Thereafter, infection might have spread to the regional lymph nodes from the ruptured skin. Y enterocolitica is typically resistant to aminopenicillins and narrow-spectrum cephalosporins. In most cases, these inefficient antibiotic agents were initially prescribed, but patient conditions rapidly improved after implementing appropriate therapy and drainage. In addition, primary skin and soft-tissue infections occurred even in patients lacking risk factors. Physicians should consider the rare differential diagnosis of Y enterocolitica infection when seeing patients with deteriorating skin lesions under standard treatment, even if the patient is immunocompetent. Extensive deep vein thrombosis treatment using fondaparinux and edoxaban: a case report

Factor Xa inhibitor is a key drug in the coagulation cascade. Parenteral anticoagulation using low molecular weight heparin or fondaparinux is the recommended form of treatment for most patients presenting with venous thrombosis. Following the acute phase, edoxaban is recommended. We present a case of extensive deep vein thrombosis treated using fondaparinux and edoxaban. more » ... red to our hospital. Ultrasonography revealed a thrombus in the left femoral vein. Computed tomographic angiography revealed clots in the distal right pulmonary artery. Thus, the anticoagulant treatment was initiated with subcutaneous injections of fondaparinux (7.5 mg) for 5 consecutive days, followed by once daily oral administration of edoxaban (60 mg). After 3 months of treatment, a regression of thrombotic clots was shown. Three months later, the remaining clots disappeared, leaving only mural thrombi; no bleeding complications were observed during the treatment period. Conclusion: The anticoagulant treatment with subcutaneous fondaparinux and subsequently with oral edoxaban was effective for treating extensive deep vein thrombosis.
