Knowledge Mining with Scene Text for Fine-Grained Recognition [article]

Recently, the semantics of scene text has been proven to be essential in fine-grained image classification. However, the existing methods mainly exploit the literal meaning of scene text for fine-grained recognition, which might be irrelevant when it is not significantly related to objects/scenes. We propose an end-to-end trainable network that mines implicit contextual knowledge behind scene text image and enhance the semantics and correlation to fine-tune the image representation. Unlike the
more » ... xisting methods, our model integrates three modalities: visual feature extraction, text semantics extraction, and correlating background knowledge to fine-grained image classification. Specifically, we employ KnowBert to retrieve relevant knowledge for semantic representation and combine it with image features for fine-grained classification. Experiments on two benchmark datasets, Con-Text, and Drink Bottle, show that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art by 3.72\% mAP and 5.39\% mAP, respectively. To further validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, we create a new dataset on crowd activity recognition for the evaluation. The source code and new dataset of this work are available at

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy can ameliorate the EMT phenomenon in keloid tissue

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has been widely used in the clinical setting. In this study, HBOT therapy was evaluated for its ability to ameliorate the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) phenomenon in keloid tissue. Keloid patients were randomly divided into two groups: keloid patients (K group, 9 patients) and keloid patients receiving HBOT (O group, 9 patients). more » ... flowmeter was used to measure the keloid blood supply of patients in the O group. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining was used to observe morphology. E-cadherin, ZO-1, vimentin, fibronectin, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and hypoxia inducible factor (HIF)-1α were measured by immunofluorescence staining and Western blot analysis. Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) was used to evaluate the mRNA expression level of these factors as well. In the O group, keloid blood perfusion was significantly reduced after patients received HBOT. Compared with the K group, lower expression levels of vimentin, vibronectin, VEGF, and HIF-1α were observed in the O group, whereas the expression of E-cadherin and ZO-1 was significantly higher. The mRNA expression of E-cadherin and ZO-1 was also increased after HBOT. The expression levels of factors related to the EMT phenomenon were significantly reversed in keloid patients after they received HBOT, indicating that HBOT may be an effective therapy against the EMT phenomenon in keloid patients.

Voltage control in power distribution networks has been greatly challenged by the increasing penetration of volatile and intermittent devices. These devices can also provide limited reactive power resources that can be used to regulate the network-wide voltage. A decentralized voltage control strategy can be designed by minimizing a quadratic voltage mismatch error objective using gradient-projection (GP) updates. This paper aims to analyze the performance of this decentralized GP-based voltage control design under two dynamic scenarios: i) the nodes perform the decentralized update in an asynchronous fashion, and ii) the network operating condition is time-varying. For the asynchronous voltage control, we improve the existing convergence condition by recognizing that the voltage based gradient is always up-to-date. By modeling the network dynamics using an autoregressive process and considering time-varying resource constraints, we provide an error bound in tracking the instantaneous optimal solution to the quadratic error objective. This result can be extended to more general constrained dynamic optimization problems with smooth strongly convex objective functions under stochastic processes that have bounded iterative changes. Extensive numerical tests have been performed to demonstrate and validate our analytical results for realistic power networks.

Olivine lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) is considered as a promising cathode material for high power-density lithium ion battery due to its high capacity, long cycle life, environmental friendly, low cost, and safety consideration. An ATF4-ATG5 signaling in hypothalamic POMC neurons regulates obesity

ATF4 (activating transcription factor 4) is an important transcription factor that has many biological functions, while its role in hypothalamic POMC (pro-opiomelanocortin-a) neurons in the regulation of energy homeostasis has not been explored. more » ... Mechanistically, we found the expression of ATG5 (autophagy-related 5) is upregulated in POMC neurons of PAKO mice, and ATF4 regulates ATG5 expression by binding directly to its promoter. Mice with Atf4 and Atg5 double knockout in POMC neurons have reduced energy expenditure and gain more fat mass compared with PAKO mice under a HFD. Finally, the effect of Atf4 knockout in POMC neurons is possibly mediated by enhanced ATG5-dependent macroautophagy/autophagy and a-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (a-MSH) production in the hypothalamus. Together, this work not only identifies a beneficial role for ATF4 in hypothalamic POMC neurons in the regulation of obesity, but also provides a new potential therapeutic target for obesity and obesity-related metabolic diseases.

Enhanced Hydrogenation Performance over Hollow Structured Co‐CoO x @N‐C Capsules

It is desirable to design nonprecious metal nanocatalysts with high stability and catalytic performance for fine chemicals production. Here, a method is reported for the preparation of cobalt metal and cobalt oxide cores confined within nanoporous nitrogen-doped hollow carbon capsules. Core-shell structured Zn/Co-ZIF@polymer materials are fabricated through a facile coating polymer strategy on the surface of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF). more » ... tal and cobalt oxide are derived from a facile confined pyrolysis of Zn/Co-ZIF@polymer. The hollow Co-CoOx@N-C capsules can prevent sintering and agglomeration of the cobalt nanoparticles and the nanoporous shell allows for efficient mass transport. The specific surface area and Co particle size are optimized through finely tuning the original Zn content in ZIF particles, thus enhancing overall catalytic activity. The yolk-shell structured Zn4Co1Ox@carbon hollow capsules are shown to be a highly active and selective catalyst (selectivity >99%) for hydrogenation of nitrobenzene to aniline. Furthermore, Zn4Co1Ox@carbon hollow particles show superior catalytic stability, and no deactivation after 8 cycles of reaction. The hollow Co-CoOx@N-C capsules may shed light on a green and sustainable catalytic process for fine chemicals production.

Temporal Interlacing Network [article]

For a long time, the vision community tries to learn the spatio-temporal representation by combining convolutional neural network together with various temporal models, such as the families of Markov chain, optical flow, RNN and temporal convolution. However, these pipelines consume enormous computing resources due to the alternately learning process for spatial and temporal information. One natural question is whether we can embed the temporal information into the spatial one so the
more » ... in the two domains can be jointly learned once-only. In this work, we answer this question by presenting a simple yet powerful operator – temporal interlacing network (TIN). Instead of learning the temporal features, TIN fuses the two kinds of information by interlacing spatial representations from the past to the future, and vice versa. A differentiable interlacing target can be learned to control the interlacing process. In this way, a heavy temporal model is replaced by a simple interlacing operator. We theoretically prove that with a learnable interlacing target, TIN performs equivalently to the regularized temporal convolution network (r-TCN), but gains 4 6 challenging benchmarks. These results push the state-of-the-art performances of video understanding by a considerable margin. Not surprising, the ensemble model of the proposed TIN won the 1^st place in the ICCV19 - Multi Moments in Time challenge. Code is made available to facilitate further research at
