2015 Chinese Optics Letters (COL)
We propose a scheme to obtain a low-loss propagation of Airy surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) along the interface between a dielectric and a negative-index metamaterial (NIMM). We show that, by using the transverse-magnetic mode and the related destructive interference effect between electric and magnetic absorption responses, the propagation loss of the Airy SPPs can be largely suppressed when the optical frequency is close to the lossless point of the NIMM. As a result, the Airy SPPs

While pretrained language models ("LM") have driven impressive gains over morpho-syntactic and semantic tasks, their ability to model discourse and pragmatic phenomena is less clear. As a step towards a better understanding of their discourse modelling capabilities, we propose a sentence intrusion detection task. We examine the performance of a broad range of pretrained LMs on this detection task for English. Lacking a dataset for the task, we introduce INSteD, a novel intruder sentence

Our experiments show that pretrained LMs perform impressively in in-domain evaluation, but experience a substantial drop in the cross-domain setting, indicating limited generalisation capacity. Further results over a novel linguistic probe dataset show that there is substantial room for improvement, especially in the cross-domain setting.

and Purpose: Atrial metabolic remodeling plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of atrial fibrillation (AF). Sirtuin3 (Sirt3) plays an important role in energy homeostasis. However, the effect of Sirt3 agonist Honokiol (HL) on AF is unclear. Therefore, the aim of this study is to determine the effect of HL on atrial metabolic remodeling in AF and to explore possible mechanisms.Experimental Approach: irt3 and glycogen deposition in left atria of AF patients were examined. Twenty-one rabbits

The HL-1 cells were subjected to rapid pacing at 5 Hz for 24 h, in the presence or absence of HL and overexpression or siRNA of Sirt3 by transfection. Metabolic factors, circulating metabolites, atrial electrophysiology, ATP level, and glycogens deposition were detected. Acetylated protein and activity of its enzymes were detected.Key Results: Sirt3 was significantly down-regulated in AF patients and rabbit/HL-1cell model, resulting in the abnormal expression of its downstream metabolic key factors, which were significantly restored by HL. Meanwhile, AF induced an increase of the acetylation level in long-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase (LCAD), AceCS2 and GDH, following decreasing of activity of it enzymes, resulting in abnormal alterations of metabolites and reducing of ATP, which was inhibited by HL. The Sirt3 could regulate acetylated modification of key metabolic enzymes, and the increase of Sirt3 rescued AF induced atrial metabolic remodeling. Conclusion and Implications: HL inhibited atrial metabolic remodeling in AF via the Sirt3 pathway. The present study may provide a novel therapeutical strategy for AF.

This paper proposes a novel data-driven approach for inertial navigation, which learns to estimate trajectories of natural human motions just from an inertial measurement unit (IMU) in every smartphone. The key observation is that human motions are repetitive and consist of a few major modes (e.g., standing, walking, or turning). Our algorithm regresses a velocity vector from the history of linear accelerations and angular velocities, then corrects low-frequency bias in the linear

We have acquired training data with ground-truth motions across multiple human subjects and multiple phone placements (e.g., in a bag or a hand). The qualitatively and quantitatively evaluations have demonstrated that our algorithm has surprisingly shown comparable results to full Visual Inertial navigation. To our knowledge, this paper is the first to integrate sophisticated machine learning techniques with inertial navigation, potentially opening up a new line of research in the domain of data-driven inertial navigation. We will publicly share our code and data to facilitate further research.

Federated learning methods enable us to train machine learning models on distributed user data while preserving its privacy. However, it is not always feasible to obtain high-quality supervisory signals from users, especially for vision tasks. Unlike typical federated settings with labeled client data, we consider a more practical scenario where the distributed client data is unlabeled, and a centralized labeled dataset is available on the server. We further take the server-client and

Within this new Federated Multi-Target Domain Adaptation (FMTDA) task, we analyze the model performance of exiting domain adaptation methods and propose an effective DualAdapt method to address the new challenges. Extensive experimental results on image classification and semantic segmentation tasks demonstrate that our method achieves high accuracy, incurs minimal communication cost, and requires low computational resources on client devices.

2020 arXiv   pre-print
Applying the knowledge of an object detector trained on a specific domain directly onto a new domain is risky, as the gap between two domains can severely degrade model's performance. Furthermore, since different instances commonly embody distinct modal information in object detection scenario, the feature alignment of source and target domain is hard to be realized. To mitigate these problems, we propose a Graph-induced Prototype Alignment (GPA) framework to seek for category-level domain

In the nutshell, more precise instance-level features are obtained through graph-based information propagation among region proposals, and, on such basis, the prototype representation of each class is derived for category-level domain alignment. In addition, in order to alleviate the negative effect of class-imbalance on domain adaptation, we design a Class-reweighted Contrastive Loss to harmonize the adaptation training process. Combining with Faster R-CNN, the proposed framework conducts feature alignment in a two-stage manner. Comprehensive results on various cross-domain detection tasks demonstrate that our approach outperforms existing methods with a remarkable margin. Our code is available at
