This paper presents a parameter formula connecting the well-known proportional-integralderivative (PID) control and the active disturbance rejection control (ADRC). On the one hand, this formula gives a quantitative lower bound to the bandwidth of the extended state observer (ESO) used in ADRC, implying that the ESO is not necessarily of high gain. On the other hand, enlightened by the design of ADRC, a new PID tuning rule is provided, which can guarantee both strong robustness and nice

Moreover, it is proved that the ESO can be rewritten as a suitable linear combination of the three terms in PID, which can give a better estimate for the system uncertainty than the single integral term in the PID controller. Theoretical results are verified also by simulations in the paper.

Domain Balancing: Face Recognition on Long-Tailed Domains [article]

Long-tailed problem has been an important topic in face recognition task. However, existing methods only concentrate on the long-tailed distribution of classes. Differently, we devote to the long-tailed domain distribution problem, which refers to the fact that a small number of domains frequently appear while other domains far less existing. more » ... ations. In this paper, we propose a novel Domain Balancing (DB) mechanism to handle this problem. Specifically, we first propose a Domain Frequency Indicator (DFI) to judge whether a sample is from head domains or tail domains. Secondly, we formulate a light-weighted Residual Balancing Mapping (RBM) block to balance the domain distribution by adjusting the network according to DFI. Finally, we propose a Domain Balancing Margin (DBM) in the loss function to further optimize the feature space of the tail domains to improve generalization. Extensive analysis and experiments on several face recognition benchmarks demonstrate that the proposed method effectively enhances the generalization capacities and achieves superior performance.

The Role of NLRP3 and IL-1β in Refractory Epilepsy Brain Injury

Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the roles and mechanisms of inflammatory mediators NLRP3 and IL-1β in refractory temporal epilepsy brain injury. Method: First, the brain tissue and the peripheral blood of children undergoing intractable temporal lobe epilepsy surgery were analyzed as research objects. more » ... ice. Pilocarpine was injected intraperitoneally into the experimental group, and isovolumetric saline was injected intraperitoneally into the control group (n = 8 in each group). The expression of IL-1β in the peripheral blood, cerebral cortex, and hippocampus of mice was measured by ELISA at 3 h, 24 h, 3 days, and 7 days after modeling. Fluoro-Jade B (FJB) and TUNEL methods were used to determine necrosis and apoptosis in hippocampal neurons, respectively, and the expression of NLRP3 in the cortex was measured by immunofluorescence methods. Result: (1) The IL-1β levels in the peripheral blood of children with intractable temporal lobe epilepsy were higher than those in the control group (t = 2.813, P = 0.01). There was also a positive correlation between IL-1β expression levels and the onset time of a single convulsion in patients with refractory epilepsy (r = 0.9735, P < 0.05). The expression level of NLRP3 in the cerebral cortex of patients with refractory temporal lobe epilepsy was higher than that in the control group. (2) The expression level of NLRP3 in the hippocampus of wild-type mice increased 3 days after modeling and decreased slightly at 7 days but remained higher than that of the control group. IL-1β levels in peripheral blood were significantly higher than those in the control group at 3 days (t = 8.259, P < 0.0001). The IL-1β levels in the peripheral blood of NLRP3 knockout mice were lower than those in the wild-type group at 3 days (t = 3.481, P = 0.004). At day 7, the neuronal necrosis and apoptosis levels in the CA3 region of the hippocampus decreased. Conclusion: NLRP3 may be involved in the development of refractory temporal lobe epilepsy. Inhibiting NLRP3 may alleviate local brain injury by downregulating the IL-1β expression. The IL-1β levels in the peripheral blood of patients with refractory temporal lobe epilepsy may reflect the severity of convulsions.

A topological structure, as a subset of [0 2 ) , is proposed for the set of quadratic Lyapunov functions (QLFs) of a given stable linear system. A necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a common QLF of a finite set of stable matrices is obtained as the positivity of a certain integral. The structure and the conditions are considerably simplified for planar systems. It is also proved that a set of block upper triangular matrices share a common QLF, iff each set of diagonal blocks share a common QLF.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials provide extraordinary opportunities for exploring phenomena arising in atomically thin crystals. Beginning with the first isolation of graphene, mechanical exfoliation has been a key to provide high-quality 2D materials but despite improvements it is still limited in yield, lateral size and contamination. Here we introduce a contamination-free, one-step and universal Au-assisted mechanical exfoliation method and demonstrate its effectiveness by isolating 40 types
more » ... f single-crystalline monolayers, including elemental 2D crystals, metal-dichalcogenides, magnets and superconductors. Most of them are of millimeter-size and high-quality, as shown by transfer-free measurements of electron microscopy, photo spectroscopies and electrical transport. Large suspended 2D crystals and heterojunctions were also prepared with high-yield. Enhanced adhesion between the crystals and the substrates enables such efficient exfoliation, for which we identify a common rule that underpins a universal route for producing large-area monolayers and thus supports studies of fundamental properties and potential application of 2D materials.

Colorectal cancer can be grouped into Dukes A, B, C, and D stages based on its developments. Generally speaking, more advanced patients have poorer prognosis. To integrate progression stage prediction systems with recurrence prediction systems, we proposed an ensemble prognostic model for colorectal cancer. High risk patients and low risk patients predicted by the ensemble model had a significant different disease free survival (log-rank test p-value, 0.0016) and disease specific survival (log-rank test p-value, 0.0041). The ensemble model can better distinguish the high risk and low risk patients than the stage prediction model and the recurrence prediction model alone. This method could be applied to the studies of other diseases and it could significantly improve the prediction performance by ensembling heterogeneous information.

SENP1 desensitizes hypoxic ovarian cancer cells to cisplatin by up-regulating HIF-1α

Hypoxia-inducible factor 1 alpha (HIF-1α) is closely related to chemoresistance of ovarian cancers. Although it is reported that HIF-1α can be regulated by Sentrin/SUMO-specific protease 1 (SENP1), the effects of SENP1 on HIF-1α is still controversial. In this study, we identified that SENP1 positively regulated the expression of HIF-1α by deSUMOylation and weakened the sensitivity of hypoxic ovarian cancer cells to cisplatin. p53 SUMOylation Mediates AOPP-Induced Endothelial Senescence and Apoptosis Evasion

The aging of endothelial cells plays a critical role in the development of age-related vascular disease. We established a model of endothelial premature senescence by application of Advanced oxidation protein products (AOPPs) modified bovine serum albumin (AOPP-BSA) in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). This cellular senescence was accompanied with endothelial barrier dysfunction and angiogenesis impairment. It was further revealed that these senescent HUVECs underwent apoptosis
more » ... asion and the receptor for advanced glycation endproducts (RAGE) played a role in these processes. The AOPP-induced senescence was regulated by the state of autophagy in HUVECs. We further proved that AOPP-BSA attenuated the autophagy of HUVECs, led to p53 SUMOylation at K386, resulting in endothelial senescence. We also established the animal model of vascular senescence by using ApoE−/− mice fed with high-fat diet plus daily injection of AOPP-BSA to verify the role of p53 SUMOylation in vascular senescence. Combined with intraperitoneal injection of rapamycin, the effect of autophagy on AOPP-induced p53 SUMOylation was also confirmed in vivo. Our data indicates that p53 SUMOylation at K386 plays an important role in AOPP-induced endothelial senescence and apoptosis evasion, suggesting that p53 K386 SUMOylation may serve as a potential therapeutic target in protecting against vascular senescence.
