Radial shock waves therapy (RSWT) differs from extracorporeal shock waves therapy (ESWT) in that it produces a non-focused wave that is dissipated radially at the skin. Few studies have yet explored the effects of RSWT on bone tissue. Osteoblasts in culture flasks were studied by polymerase chain reaction after treatment with RSW (500 impulses, 0.05 mJ/mm 2 ). more » ... nd receptor activator NF kappa ligand expression at 24 and 48 h, of osteocalcin at 24, 48 and 72 h, and osteopontin at 48 and 72 h. These findings show that RSWT is not indicated for treatment of delayed fracture union, pseudoarthrosis, and complex regional pain syndrome. The observed reduction in the receptor activator of nuclear factor-kB ligand/osteoprotegerin ratio suggests that it has an inhibiting effect on osteoclastogenesis, which could make it a useful tool for applications in proliferative diseases.

Linear analysis of the gravitational beam-plasma instability [article]

We investigate the well-known phenomenon of the beam-plasma instability in the gravitational sector, when a fast population of particles interacts with the massive scalar mode of an Horndeski theory of gravity, resulting into the linear growth of the latter amplitude. Following the approach used in the standard electromagnetic case, we start from the dielectric representation of the gravita- tional plasma, as introduced in a previous analysis of the Landau damping for the scalar Horndeski mode.
more » ... Then, we set up the modified Vlasov-Einstein equation, using at first a Dirac delta func- tion to describe the fast beam distribution. This way, we provide an analytical expression for the dispersion relation and we demonstrate the existence of non-zero growth rate for the linear evolu- tion of the Horndeski scalar mode. A numerical investigation is then performed with a trapezoidal beam distribution function, which confirms the analytical results and allows to demonstrate how the growth rate decreases as the beam spread increases.

Neuromuscular diseases (NMDs) are inherited or acquired conditions affecting skeletal muscles, motor nerves, or neuromuscular junctions. Most of them are characterized by a progressive damage of muscle fibers with reduced muscle strength, disability, and poor health-related quality of life of affected patients. In this scenario, skeletal health is usually compromised as a consequence of modified bone-muscle cross-talk including biomechanical and bio-humoral issues, resulting in increased risk
more » ... bone fragility and fractures. In addition, NMD patients frequently face nutritional issues, including malnutrition due to feeding disorders and swallowing problems that might affect bone health. Moreover, in these patients, low levels of physical activity or immobility are common and might lead to overweight or obesity that can also interfere with bone strength features. Also, vitamin D deficiency could play a critical role both in the pathogenesis and in the clinical scenario of many NMDs, suggesting that its correction could be useful in maintaining or enhancing bone health, especially in the early phases of NMDs. Last but not least, specific disease-modifying drugs, available for some NMDs, are frequently burdened with adverse effects on bone tissue. For example, glucocorticoid therapy, standard of care for many muscular dystrophies, prolongs long-term survival in treated patients; nevertheless, high dose and/or chronic use of these drugs are a common cause of secondary osteoporosis. This review addresses the current state of knowledge about the factors that play a role in determining bone alterations reported in NMDs, how these factors can modify the biological pathways underlying bone health, and which are the available interventions to manage bone involvement in patients affected by NMDs. Considering the complexity of care of these patients, an interdisciplinary and multimodal management strategy based on both pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions is recommended, particularly targeting musculoskeletal issues that are closely related to functional independence as well as social implications.

The three shared tasks proposed in EvaLatin 2022, i. e. Lemmatization, Part-of-Speech Tagging and Features Identification, are aimed to foster research in the field of language technologies for Classical languages. Modified Gravitational Waves Across Galaxies from Macroscopic Gravity [article]

We analyze the propagation of gravitational waves in a medium containing bounded subsystems ("molecules"), able to induce significant Macroscopic Gravity effects. We establish a precise constitutive relation between the average quadrupole and the amplitudes of a vacuum gravitational wave, via the geodesic deviation equation. Then we determine the modified equation for the wave inside the medium and the associated dispersion relation. A phenomenological analysis shows that anomalous
more » ... of the wave emerge with an appreciable experimental detectability if the medium is identified with a typical galaxy. Both the modified dispersion relation (wave velocity less than the speed of light) and anomalous oscillations modes could be detectable by the incoming LISA or pulsar timing arrays experiments, having the appropriate size to see the concerned wavelengths (larger than the molecular size) and the appropriate sensitivity to detect the expected deviation from vacuum General Relativity.
