Comparative evaluation of three image analysis methods for angular displacement measurement in a MEMS microgripper prototype: a preliminary study

<p class="Abstract"><span lang="EN-US">The functional characterization of MEMS devices is relevant today since it aims at verifying the behavior of these devices, as well as improving their design. more &raquo; ... ethod, SURF-based (Angular Displacement Measurement based on Speeded Up Robust Features, ADM<sub>SURF</sub>) and FFT-based (Angular Displacement Measurement based on Fast Fourier Transform, ADM<sub>FFT</sub>) method, respectively. Moreover, the measurement results are compared with a Semi-Automatic Method (SAM), to evaluate which of them is the most suitable for the functional characterization of the device. The curve fitting of the outcomes from SAM and ADM<sub>SURF</sub>, showed a quadratic trend in agreement with the analytical model. Moreover, the ADM<sub>SURF</sub> measurements below 1° are affected by an uncertainty of about 0.08° for voltages less than 14 V, confirming its suitability for microgripper characterization. It was also evaluated that the ADM<sub>FFT</sub> is more suitable for measurement of rotations greater than 1° (up to 30°), with a measurement uncertainty of 0.02°, at 95% of confidence level.</span></p>

A Preliminary Study on the Adaptive SNR Threshold Method for Depth of Penetration Measurements in Diagnostic Ultrasounds

Maximum depth-of-penetration (DOP) is among the most relevant parameters in quality assurance programs for Ultrasound (US) scanners. Nowadays, a generally-accepted protocol for DOP estimation is still awaited and, in common practice, DOP is visually assessed despite the low accuracy. To overcome the eye-based assessment subjectivity, automatic image analysis methods have been proposed in literature. The present work focuses on a novel automatic method, namely the adaptive Signal to Noise Ratio

SNR) threshold method (AdSTM), developed in the MATLAB environment, by comparing it with an existing automatic approach, namely the tangent threshold method (TTM), and the mean judgment of eight observers (naked eye method). The three investigated methods were applied on data acquired from four US scanners for general purpose imaging, equipped with linear, convex, and vector array probes. Tests were carried out in two different configuration settings (raw scanner and default preset working conditions). AdSTM outcomes were tested by means of Monte Carlo Simulations. Most of measurement results were compatible despite the fact that the AdSTM seemed to be more sensitive and faster than the TTM. The results analysis confirms the higher dispersion of the naked eye method in DOP assessment with respect to the proposed automatic methods.

A preliminary study on an image analysis based method for lowest detectable signal measurements in Pulsed Wave Doppler ultrasounds

<span lang="EN-GB">Nowadays, Doppler system performance evaluation is a widespread issue because a shared worldwide standard is still awaited. Among the recommended Doppler test parameters, the lowest detectable signal could be considered mandatory in Quality Control (QC) protocols for Pulsed Wave (PW) Doppler. Such parameter is defined as the minimum signal level that can be clearly distinguished from noise and therefore, it is considered as related to PW Doppler sensitivity. The present study
more &raquo; ... focuses on proposing and validating a novel image analysis based method for the estimation of the Lowest Detectable Signal in the spectrogram image (LDS<sub>IMG</sub>), namely Automatic Doppler Sensitivity Measurement Method (ADSMM), as well as to compare its results with the outcomes retrieved from the Naked Eye Doppler Sensitivity Method (NEDSM), based on the mean judgment of three independent observers. Data have been collected from a Doppler flow phantom, through three ultrasound systems for general purpose imaging, equipped with two linear array probes each and with two configuration settings. Results are globally compatible among the proposed methods, US systems and settings. Further studies could be carried out on a higher number of US diagnostic systems, Doppler frequencies and observers, as well as with different probe and phantom models.</span>

Doppler flow phantom failure detection by combining empirical mode decomposition and independent component analysis with short time Fourier transform

<p class="Abstract">Nowadays, objective protocols and criteria for the monitoring of phantoms failures are still lacking in literature, despite their technical limitations. In such a context, the present work aims at providing an improvement of a previously proposed method for the Doppler flow phantom failures detection. Such failures were classified as low frequency oscillations, high velocity pulses and velocity drifts. The novel objective method, named EMoDICA-STFT, is based on the combined
more &raquo; ... pplication of the Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD), Independent Component Analysis (ICA) and Short Time Fourier Transform (STFT) techniques on Pulsed Wave (PW) Doppler spectrograms. After a first series of simulations and the determination of adaptive thresholds, phantom failures were detected on real PW spectrograms through the EMoDICA-STFT method. Data were acquired from two flow phantom models set at five flow regimes, through a single ultrasound (US) diagnostic system equipped with a linear, a convex and a phased array probe, as well as with two configuration settings. Despite the promising outcomes, further studies should be carried out on a greater number of Doppler phantoms and US systems as well as including an in-depth investigation of the proposed method uncertainty.</p>

Biomechanical risk in fatiguing frequency-dependent lifting activities: muscle coactivation in people with and without low back pain

Musculoskeletal diseases and disorders from biomechanical overload are very common among workers. In Italy in 2019, occupational diseases of the osteomuscular system and connective tissue accounted for 66% of the total number of diseases reported to INAIL. Many factors can contribute to the establishment of a condition of biomechanical overload and therefore to the onset of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs). Among these, work-related low-back disorders (WLBDs), caused mainly by
more &raquo; ... ling heavy loads, are very common. In recent years, several methods have been developed to assess the risk of biomechanical overload, included in several international standards (ISO-11228, ISO-11226, ISO/TR 12295 and 12296) aimed at identifying high-risk work activities and assessing the effectiveness of ergonomic interventions. Among the best known, with regard to the manual lifting of heavy loads, there is the Revised NIOSH Lifting Equation that, while presenting many advantages (cost-effectiveness, non-invasiveness, speed of application ...) at the same time also has limitations concerning mainly the high subjectivity (subject of scientific debate) and the impossibility of these methods to assess all work tasks. From these premises, it is clear the usefulness of being able to use new quantitative risk assessment methodologies, objectifiable and repeatable, which provide for the possibility of assessing the risk from biomechanical overload even in modern working scenarios where the use of exoskeletons by workers and the sharing of working space with cobots is becoming increasingly widespread. In fact, the methods currently used are incomplete and ineffective in assessing the real impact that these technologies have on the health and safety of workers in Industry 4.0. Recent studies (some of which we were involved in) have introduced the possibilities offered by optoelectronic systems, inertial sensors (IMUs) and surface electromyography (sEMG), to integrate the most widely used observational methodologies. These modern technologies, evaluating how a subject moves his joints and uses his muscles during the execution of a work task, can integrate the observational methods, quantify the elements that characterize the risk minimizing the evaluation errors caused by individual subjectivity and allow to carry out the assessment of biomechanical risk even in those areas where the currently most widespread methodologies are not able to give exhaustive answers. In particular, the innovative methodologies based on IMUs and sEMG, allow the instrumental quantitative assessment of biomechanical risk directly in the field thanks to the fact that the sensors are miniaturized, wearable, easily transportable and based on "wireless" transmission of data acquired on the worker who performs the task. These aspects facilitate data recording, allowing accurate signal acquisition even in unfavorable environments and in work situations where the worker interacts with a cobot or uses an exoskeleton. Previous studies have involved studies of non-fatiguing lifts, where the movement and relative risk of single repetitions of lifting were studied. Currently, we wonder what happens when the work activity becomes fatiguing and whether it is still possible to use these methods to classify risk. In addition, another unexplored question concerns the presence of workers who continue to perform work activity during the first phase of onset of musculoskeletal disorders: can the risk to which these workers are exposed be considered the same as that involving workers without pain? To answer these questions, we conducted an experimental campaign at the University of Birmingham in collaboration with Roma Tre University and INAIL in which subjects with and without back disorders performed fatiguing lifts of 15 minutes in three risk levels determined by three different lifting frequencies. We studied trunk muscle activity in terms of muscle coactivation of the trunk flexor and extensor muscles. The results show how coactivation can classify risk during manual load lifting activities by distinguishing not only the level of risk but also the presence or absence of back disorders. These results suggest that the use of electromyographic features to assess the biomechanical risk associated with work activities can also be used in the presence of fatiguing lifting also to distinguish the risk in case of subjects with back pain. This methodology could be used to monitor fatigue and extend the possibilities offered by currently available instrumental-based approaches.

Mitochondrial diseases (MDs) are a large group of genetically determined multisystem disorders, characterized by extreme phenotypic heterogeneity, attributable in part to the dual genomic control (nuclear and mitochondrial DNA) of the mitochondrial proteome. Advances in next-generation sequencing technologies over the past two decades have presented clinicians with a challenge: to select the candidate disease-causing variants among the huge number of data provided. more &raquo; ... ols available to support genetic interpretations still lack specificity and sensitivity. For this reason, the diagnosis of MDs continues to be difficult, with the new "genotype first" approach still failing to diagnose a large group of patients. With the aim of investigating possible relationships between clinical and/or biochemical phenotypes and definitive molecular diagnoses, we performed a retrospective multicenter study of 111 pediatric patients with clinical suspicion of MD. In this cohort, the strongest predictor of a molecular (in particular an mtDNA-related) diagnosis of MD was neuroimaging evidence of basal ganglia (BG) involvement. Regression analysis confirmed that normal BG imaging predicted negative genetic studies for MD. Psychomotor regression was confirmed as an independent predictor of a definitive diagnosis of MD. The findings of this study corroborate previous data supporting a role for neuroimaging in the diagnostic approach to MDs and reinforce the idea that mtDNA sequencing should be considered for first-line testing, at least in specific groups of children.

SMA-miRs: miR-181a-5p, -324-5p, -451a are overexpressed in spinal muscular atrophy skeletal muscle and serum samples

Background:Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a neuromuscular disorder characterized by the degeneration of the second motor-neuron. The phenotype ranges from very severe to very mild forms. All patients have the homozygous loss of the SMN1 gene and a variable number of SMN2 (generally two-to-four copies), inversely related with the severity. The amazing results of the available treatments have made compelling the need of prognostic biomarkers to predict the progression trajectories of patients.
more &raquo; ... eside the SMN2 products, few other biomarkers have been evaluated so far, including some miRs.Methods:We performed whole miRNome analysis of muscle samples of patients and controls (14 biopsies and 9 cultures). The levels of muscle differentially expressed miRs were evaluated in serum samples (51 patients and 37 controls) and integrated with SMN2 copies, SMN2-full length transcript levels in blood and age (SMA-score). Results:Over 100 miRs were differentially expressed in SMA muscle; three of them (HSA-miR-181a-5p, -324-5p, -451a; SMA-miRs) were significantly up-regulated in serum of patients. The severity predicted by the SMA-score was related with that of the clinical classification at a correlation coefficient of 0.87 (p<10-5).Conclusions:miRNome analyses suggest the primary involvement of skeletal muscle in SMA pathogenesis; the SMA-miRs are likely actively released in the blood flow, even if their function and target cells require to be elucidated. The accuracy of the SMA-score needs to be verified in replicative studies: if confirmed, its use could be crucial for the routine prognostic assessment, also in pre-symptomatic patients.
