This study explored the association of shame and guilt with PTSD among women who had experienced intimate partner violence (IPV). Sixty-three women were assessed by a research clinic serving the mental health needs of women IPV survivors. Results indicated that shame, guilt-related distress, and guilt-related cognitions showed significant associations with PTSD but global guilt did not. When shame and guilt were examined in the context of specific forms of psychological abuse, moderation
more » ... s indicated that high levels of both emotional/verbal abuse and dominance/isolation interacted with high levels of shame in their association with PTSD. Neither guilt-related distress nor guilt-related cognitions were moderated by specific forms of psychological abuse in their association with PTSD. These data support the conceptualization of shame, guilt distress, and guilt cognitions as relevant features of PTSD. Results are discussed in light of proposed changes to diagnostic criteria for PTSD.

The effects of dissociation on information processing for analogue trauma and neutral stimuli: A laboratory study

2012 Journal of Anxiety Disorders
This study investigated the effects of high and low levels of dissociation on information processing for analogue trauma and neutral stimuli. Fifty-four undergraduate females who reported high and low levels of trait dissociation were presented with two films, one depicting traumatic events, the other containing neutral material. Participants completed a divided attention task (yielding a proxy measure of attention), as well as explicit memory (free-recall) and implicit memory (word-stem
more » ... ion) tasks for both films. Results indicated that the high DES group showed less attention and had poorer recall for the analogue trauma stimuli, relative to the neutral stimuli and the low DES group. These findings suggest that high levels of trait dissociation are associated with reductions in attention and memory for analogue trauma stimuli, relative to neutral stimuli and relative to low trait dissociation. Implications for the role of cognitive factors in the etiology of negative post-trauma responses are discussed.

Factor Structure of the Dissociative Experiences Scale: An Examination Across Sexual Assault Status

The Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES) has a long history within the literature, with conflicting reports concerning its underlying components and stability across different samples. This study examined the DES factor structure using advanced analytic procedures. Additionally, the impact of sexual victimization on the underlying components of the DES was explored, in order to examine whether sexual trauma influenced the scale's structure. In Study 1, exploratory factor analysis suggested the
more » ... ossibility of either a 1-or 2-factor structure in DES data obtained from an unselected sample of college females. Comparison of these models using an independent validation sample in Study 2 observed a clear advantage of a 2-factor structure. Study 3 explored whether sexual assault status influenced the structure of the 2-factor DES model, using samples drawn from Studies 1 and 2. A multiple group confirmatory factor analysis supported a robust 2-factor structure for the DES irrespective of sexual assault status. Dissociative phenomena have steadily gained attention across multiple areas of the psychological literature. Although conceptualizations of the construct vary, researchers agree that dissociation involves a disruption of the successful integration of thoughts, memories, and emotions into conscious awareness (DePrince and Freyd 2007). Janet, the first author to introduce the term dissociation, described the construct as pathological in nature, involving alterations in consciousness that prevent potentially traumatic information from entering into awareness (DePrince and Freyd 2007). Although some continue to conceptualize dissociative states as maladaptive responses to threatening material (e.g., Frankel 1990; Waller et al. 1996) , a more common view is that dissociative tendencies vary from normal experience (e.g., day dreaming) to severe pathology (e.g., Dissociative Identity Disorder). Within this framework, dissociative tendencies are viewed as both natural and distinguishable based on their severity (Price 1987; Spiegel 1963) . One of the instruments used most extensively to quantify the frequency and severity of dissociative experience is the Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES; Bernstein and Putnam 1986). The DES contains 28 items assessing a range of dissociative experiences along a continuous scale. For each item, respondents provide a continuous percentage rating (0 %-100 %) indicating the frequency of each dissociative experience. Evidence of both test-retest reliability (0.78 to 0.84; Carlson and Putnam 1993) and internal

Factors contributing to anxious driving behavior: The role of stress history and accident severity

Although fear and travel avoidance among anxious drivers are well documented, relatively little is known about the behavior of anxious individuals who continue to drive. Previous research has identified three broad domains of anxious driving behavior: exaggerated safety/caution behaviors, anxiety-based performance deficits, and hostile/aggressive driving behaviors. In an effort to explicate factors associated with the development of anxious driving behaviors, associations with objective
more » ... severity, accident-related distress, and life stress history were explored among individuals reporting accident involvement (N = 317). Interactive effects of accident distress and self-reported stress history were noted across all three domains of anxious driving behavior. Examination of these effects indicates unique associations between accident distress and anxious behavior only in those reporting more severe life stress. Consistent with contemporary models of anxiety, these data suggest stress history may serve as a general vulnerability factor for development of anxious driving behavior following accident involvement. Keywords driving anxiety; driving behavior; life stress; motor vehicle accidents Anxious drivers have been shown to engage in a variety of fear-related behaviors that may be considered reckless, inappropriate, or dangerous (e.g., J. Taylor, Deane, & Podd, 2007; Matthews et al., 1998) . In an effort to quantify the occurrence of anxiety-related driving behaviors, Clapp et al. (2011) identified three distinct dimensions of problematic behaviorexaggerated safety/caution, anxiety-based performance deficits, and hostile/aggressive behaviors. These behaviors are believed to contribute to negative driving outcomes and poor response to anxiety-oriented treatments, but factors associated with the development of p≤ .01; * p≤ .05; ΔR 2 = change in R 2 ; Obj = objective accident severity; Sub = subjective accident distress; Stress = life stress history (number of events); SxObj = interaction of stress history and objective severity; SxSub = interaction of stress history and subjective distress J Anxiety Disord.

Background-Diets high in red or processed meat have been positively associated with some cancers and several possible underlying mechanisms have been proposed, including iron-related pathways. However, the role of meat intake on adult glioma risk has yielded conflicting findings due to small sample sizes and heterogeneous tumor classifications. Objective-The study objective was to examine red meat, processed meat and iron intake in relation to glioma risk in the European Prospective
more » ... n into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) study. Methods-In this prospective cohort study, 408,751 individuals from nine European countries completed demographic and dietary questionnaires at recruitment. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards models were used to examine intake of red meat, processed meat, total dietary iron and haem iron in relation to incident glioma. Results-During an average follow-up of 14.1 years, 688 incident glioma cases were diagnosed. There was no evidence that any of the meat variables (red, processed meat, or subtypes of meat) or iron (total or haem) were associated with glioma; results were unchanged when the first two years of follow-up was excluded. Conclusion-This study suggests that there is no association between meat or iron intake and adult glioma. This is the largest prospective analysis of meat and iron in relation to glioma and as such provides a substantial contribution to a limited and inconsistent literature. Keywords EPIC; glioma; brain cancer; N-nitroso compounds; processed meat; red meat; dietary iron; haem iron Ward et al.
