Decorrelated Double Q-learning [article]

Gang Chen
2020 arXiv   pre-print
Q-learning with value function approximation may have the poor performance because of overestimation bias and imprecise estimate. Specifically, overestimation bias is from the maximum operator over noise estimate, which is exaggerated using the estimate of a subsequent state. Inspired by the recent advance of deep reinforcement learning and Double Q-learning, we introduce the decorrelated double Q-learning (D2Q). Specifically, we introduce the decorrelated regularization item to reduce the

Deep Learning with Nonparametric Clustering [article]

Gang Chen
2015 arXiv   pre-print
Clustering is an essential problem in machine learning and data mining. One vital factor that impacts clustering performance is how to learn or design the data representation (or features). Fortunately, recent advances in deep learning can learn unsupervised features effectively, and have yielded state of the art performance in many classification problems, such as character recognition, object recognition and document categorization. However, little attention has been paid to the potential of
more » ... eep learning for unsupervised clustering problems. In this paper, we propose a deep belief network with nonparametric clustering. As an unsupervised method, our model first leverages the advantages of deep learning for feature representation and dimension reduction. Then, it performs nonparametric clustering under a maximum margin framework -- a discriminative clustering model and can be trained online efficiently in the code space. Lastly model parameters are refined in the deep belief network. Thus, this model can learn features for clustering and infer model complexity in an unified framework. The experimental results show the advantage of our approach over competitive baselines.

We introduce a class of new objects "virtual manifolds/orbifolds", on which we develop the integration theory. In particular, the virtual localization formula is obtained.

Evolutionary Multitasking for Semantic Web Service Composition [article]

Chen Wang, Hui Ma, Gang Chen, Sven Hartmann
2019 arXiv   pre-print
Web services are basic functions of a software system to support the concept of service-oriented architecture. They are often composed together to provide added values, known as web service composition. Researchers often employ Evolutionary Computation techniques to efficiently construct composite services with near-optimized functional quality (i.e., Quality of Semantic Matchmaking) or non-functional quality (i.e., Quality of Service) or both due to the complexity of this problem. With a
more » ... icant increase in service composition requests, many composition requests have similar input and output requirements but may vary due to different preferences from different user segments. This problem is often treated as a multi-objective service composition so as to cope with different preferences from different user segments simultaneously. Without taking a multi-objective approach that gives rise to a solution selection challenge, we perceive multiple similar service composition requests as jointly forming an evolutionary multi-tasking problem in this work. We propose an effective permutation-based evolutionary multi-tasking approach that can simultaneously generate a set of solutions, with one for each service request. We also introduce a neighborhood structure over multiple tasks to allow newly evolved solutions to be evaluated on related tasks. Our proposed method can perform better at the cost of only a fraction of time, compared to one state-of-art single-tasking EC-based method. We also found that the use of the proper neighborhood structure can enhance the effectiveness of our approach.

We demonstrate a generic, user-configurable toolkit for generating different types of indoor mobility data for real-world buildings. Our prototype generates the desired data in a three-layer pipeline. The Infrastructure Layer accepts industry-standard digital building information (DBI) files to generate the host indoor environment, allowing users to configure the generation of a variety of positioning devices, such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, RFID, etc. The Moving Object Layer offers the functionality

The Positioning Layer generates synthetic signal strength measurements known as raw RSSI 1 measurements according to the positioning device data and trajectory data generated at relevant layers. It also generates different types of indoor positioning data through the customization of all typical indoor positioning methods on the raw RSSI data.

2019 World Journal of Gastroenterology
Understanding the occurrence, development, and treatment of liver diseases is the main goal of hepatopathology research. Liver diseases are not only diverse but also highly heterogeneous among individuals. At present, research on liver diseases is conducted mainly through cell culture, animal models, pathological specimens, etc. However, these methods cannot fully reveal the pathogenic mechanism and therapeutic characteristics of individualized liver diseases. Recent advances in

Guarded recursive datatype constructors

Hongwei Xi, Chiyan Chen, Gang Chen
2003 SIGPLAN notices
We introduce a notion of guarded recursive (g.r.) datatype constructors, generalizing the notion of recursive datatypes in functional programming languages such as ML and Haskell. We address both theoretical and practical issues resulted from this generalization. On one hand, we design a type system to formalize the notion of g.r. datatype constructors and then prove the soundness of the type system. On the other hand, we present some significant applications (e.g., implementing objects,
more » ... nting staged computation, etc.) of g.r. datatype constructors, arguing that g.r. datatype constructors can have far-reaching consequences in programming. The main contribution of the paper lies in the recognition and then the formalization of a programming notion that is of both theoretical interest and practical use.
