NAMNIs: Neuromodulation And Multimodal NeuroImaging software
2019
Zenodo
The basic requirements in neuroimaging research are rapidly changing due to the growing size of data sets and multimodal approaches with ever more complex, time-consuming, diverse and fast-moving standards. NAMNIs offers a ready-made, open-source pipeline for pre- and post-processing of multimodal neuroimaging and neuromodulation data with a strong focus on reproducibility and multi-platform parallelization support. NAMNIs consists of a processing pipeline for multimodal magnetic resonance

... ng (MRI) data analysis using parallel processing. It performs various pre-processing steps with the aforementioned data that calculate relevant metrics such as the number of activated voxels (spatial extent), within regions of interest (ROIs) effects, ROI-to-whole-brain calculations, probabilistic values, motion parameters, connectivity strength values (standardized in z scores), and more. These steps are performed in parallel with different topologies to enable the processing of large data sets in a reasonable time. It is applicable to High Performance Computing (HPC) and is provided as research software which is free and open-source software (FOSS). Already in the proof-of-concept and prototype phase, the project was published as abstracts of international conferences (Karali et al., 2017) (Karali et al., 2019).
On the economic evaluation of XP projects
2003
Software engineering notes
From a project economics point of view, the most important practices of Extreme Programming ( XP ) are Pair Programming and Test-Driven Development. Pair Programming leads to a large increase in the personnel cost, and Test-Driven Development adds to the development effort. On the other hand, Pair Programming can speed the project up; both Pair Programming and Test-Driven Development can reduce the defect density of the code. Can the increased cost of XP be balanced by its shorter time to

... and higher code quality ? To answer this question, we construct a new model for the business value of software projects. We then analyze the cost and benefit of XP by applying our model to a realistic sample project. We systematically vary important model parameters to provide a sensitivity analysis. Our analysis shows that the economic value of XP strongly depends on how large the XP speed and defect advantage really are. We also find that the market pressure is an important factor when assessing the business value of XP. Our study provides clear guidelines for managers when to consider using XPor better not.
Anticipatory configuration of resource-aware applications
2005
Software engineering notes
We propose an improved approach to dynamic configuration of resource-aware applications. The new anticipatory model of configuration maximizes utility based on three inputs: user preferences, application capability profiles, and resource availability. In this respect, the proposed model is similar to a model of configuration described in [2] . However, the latter addresses the dynamic nature of the problem by reacting to changes (such as decrease in resource availability), and maximizes the

... ity in a point-wise manner. The newly proposed anticipatory approach explicitly models the duration of the task and leverages possible information about the future (such as stochastic resource availability over the expected duration of the task). We expect that the anticipatory model will improve user's utility, conserve scarce resources, and reduce the amount of disruption to the user resulting from changes when compared to the reactive model. However, the optimization problem underlying the anticipatory model is computationally more difficult than the problem underlying the reactive model. We would like to investigate if the anticipatory approach is feasible and efficient in practice while delivering the above-mentioned improvements. In this paper, we carefully state the model of anticipatory configuration, highlight the sources of complexity in the problem, propose an algorithm to the anticipatory configuration problem, and provide a roadmap for research.

Empirical Methods in Software Engineering Research
2007
29th International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE'07 Companion)
Over the past decade, empirical methods have gained acceptance for validating tools and methods in software research. This tutorial aims at acquainting participants with the main methods used in empirical work in software research, enabling them to evaluate empirical results for validity as well as providing the basis for carrying out empirical studies. A wide range of empirical approaches are covered, including case studies, experiments, field studies, and surveys. These approaches are
