A parallel-in-time fixed-stress splitting method for Biot's consolidation model [article]

2018 arXiv pre-print
In this work, we study the parallel-in-time iterative solution of coupled flow and geomechanics in porous media, modelled by a two-field formulation of the Biot's equations. In particular, we propose a new version of the fixed stress splitting method, which has been widely used as solution method of these problems. This new approach forgets about the sequential nature of the temporal variable and considers the time direction as a further direction for parallelization. We present a rigorous

Review of Francisco Fernández, José (Ed.). (2018). The Plays of Margaret Drabble. A Critical Edition. Syracuse: Syracuse University Press. Pages: 176. ISBN: 978-0-8156-3605-2

Laura Monrós-Gaspar
2021 International Journal of English Studies (IJES)
A first-class degree graduate in English Literature at Newnham, young Margaret Drabble soon attracted the attention of readers and critics with the publication of her first prose works in the 1960s. Besides her interests in writing, she had developed a strong fascination with the stage, into which she had made incursions earlier in her life both as a graduate student and as an actress playing small parts with the Royal Shakespeare Company at Stratford. Her ventures into the theatre industry as
more » ... n actress and as the wife of the actor Clive Swift inevitably prompted her to practice her literary style as a playwright. Those were the years in which she was commissioned the two plays ˗Laura (1964) and Bird of Paradise (1969) ˗, which are the object of the volume under review in this article. With a renowned career as a writer of fiction, the publication of the only two plays written by Drabble over fifty years after their first performance is motivated, Fernández claims, by two main concerns: "the consideration of Drabble as the social writer par excellence of her generation and the presence in her work of an artistic impulse that has always been open to evolution and transformation" (2018: 1). And indeed, the two texts are real gems to understand the growth of the style of an essential author of her generation, but also to testify to the social changes of the Great Britain of the 1960s, when politics and social movements were clamoring for a reevaluation of the traditional roles of women. It is not difficult understand, therefore, Drabble's command that the two plays were included in an academic edition when she was first approached with this project (Fernández, 2018: 5).

A new manual wheelchair propulsion system with self-locking capability on ramps

2018 Mechanical Sciences

Abstract. A wheelchair user faces many difficulties in their everyday attempts to use ramps, especially those of some length. The present work describes the design and build of a propulsion system for manual wheelchairs for use in ascending or descending long ramps. The design is characterized by a self-locking mechanism that activates automatically to brake the chair when the user stops pushing. The system consists of a planetary transmission with a self-locking capacity

Different transmission ratios are proposed, adapted to the slope and to the user's physical capacity (measured as the power the user can apply over ample time periods). The design is shown to be viable in terms of resistance, and approximate dimensions are established for the height and width of the propulsion system. Also, a prototype was built in order to test the self-locking system on ramps.

2010 Open Life Sciences
AbstractThe aim of this study was to assess the time trend of plasmatic proteins in red deer stags. Blood samples were taken monthly from 17 male red deer for 22 months. Total plasmatic determination and protein electrophoresis were performed. Plasmatic proteins showed minimum values during spring and summer and a maximum at the peak of the mating period. Total globulins, β and γ, followed a pattern similar to that observed for total proteins, whereas α1 and α2 globulins showed no seasonal

The paper presents experimental results concerning the ultrasonically-assisted extraction of bioactive compounds from Erodium glaucophyllum roots. A comparison with conventional methodology is presented, and thereby the phytochemical composition and the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of extracts are evaluated. The phenolic profile of Erodium extracts was analyzed by TOF–LC–MS–MS. The identification of phenolic compounds revealed that the major component was (+)-gallocatechin in

The highest quantity of phenolic compounds and antioxidant capacity was found in the hydroethanolic extract obtained by conventional extraction (29.22–25.50 mg GAE/g DM; 21.174 mM Trolox equivalent). The highest content of carotenoids, varying from 0.035 to 0.114 mg/g dry matter, was reached by ultrasonic-assisted extraction. Furthermore, Erodium extracts showed a potent inhibition of the inflammatory reaction by means of the inhibition of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α). The extracts obtained when ultrasound extraction was combined with ethanol:water (50:50, v/v) presented the greatest inhibition (92%).

2017 Clinical and Preclinical Optical Diagnostics
Skin lesion segmentation is a complex step for dermoscopy pathological diagnosis. Kernel density estimation is proposed as a segmentation technique based on the statistic distribution of color intensities in the lesion and non-lesion regions.
