Decreased copy number of mitochondrial DNA: A potential diagnostic criterion for gastric cancer

An alteration in the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) copy number has been detected in numerous human cancers. However, certain changes in the mtDNA copy number that occur during the initiation and progression of gastric cancer remain undetected. more » ... were also investigated. However, the mechanism by which the change in mtDNA copy number occurs remains to be elucidated. Epigenetic changes are believed to play a significant role in regulating the mtDNA content. In order to determine whether there is a potential correlation between DNA methylation and mtDNA regulation, in vitro demethylation experiments were performed. Tumor tissues and corresponding non-cancerous tissues were surgically resected from 76 gastric cancer patients between 2010 and 2011. The results revealed that the average relative mtDNA copy numbers were 94.71±28.11 in the cancer tissues and 111.68±21.84 in the corresponding non-cancerous tissues (P<0.01). The quantitative changes in mtDNA demonstrated a significant decrease in gastric cancer, particularly in ill-defined stage III and IV cases, but had no association with gender. The mtDNA copy numbers demonstrated a marked increase (P<0.05) following demethylation treatment. The present results indicate that the mtDNA copy number plays a significant role during the progression of colorectal cancer, particularly during the late clinicopathological stages, and that the change in the mtDNA copy number may correlate with DNA methylation.

Ovarian cancer is one of the most lethal of woman cancers, and its clinical therapeutic outcome currently is unsatisfied. Dinaciclib, a novel small molecule inhibitor of CDK1, CDK2, CDK5 and CDK9, is assessed in clinical trials for the treatment of several types of cancers. more » ... with the increased intracellular ROS levels, which were accompanied by obvious alterations of related proteins such as CDKs, Cyclins, Mcl-1, XIAP and survivin. Pretreatment with N-acety-L-cysteine significantly blocked ROS generation but only partially rescued apoptosis triggered by dinaciclib. Moreover, the combination of dinaciclib with cisplatin synergistically promoted cell cycle arrest and apoptosis, and inhibited the subcutaneous xenograft growth of ovarian cancer in nude mice. Altogether, dinaciclib potently synergizes with cisplatin in preclinical models of ovarian cancer, indicating this beneficial combinational therapy may be a promising strategy for treatment of ovarian cancer.

General breather solution to the Sasa-Satsuma (SS) equation is systematically investigated in this paper. We firstly transform the SS equation into a set of three Hirota bilinear equations under proper plane wave background. Starting from a specially arranged tau-function of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili hierarchy and a set of eleven bilinear equations satisfied, we implement a series steps of reduction procedure, i.e., C-type reduction, dimension reduction and complex conjugate reduction, and

Volasertib (BI 6727), a highly selective and potent inhibitor of PLK1, has shown broad antitumor activities in the preclinical and clinical studies for the treatment of several types of cancers. However, the anticancer effect of volasertib on cervical cancer cells is still unknown. Furthermore, volasertib also enhances the intracellular reactive oxidative species (ROS) levels, and pretreated with ROS scavenger N-acety-L-cysteine totally blocks ROS generation but partly reverses volasertib-induced apoptosis. In addition, volasertib significantly potentiates the activity of cisplatin to inhibit the growth of cervical cancer in vitro and in vivo. In brief, volasertib suppresses tumor growth and potentiates the activity of cisplatin in cervical cancer, suggesting the combination of volasertib and cisplatin may be a promising strategy for the treatment of patients with cervical cancer.

General rogue wave solutions to the Sasa-Satsuma equation are constructed by the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) hierarchy reduction method. These solutions are presented in three different forms. The first form is expressed in terms of recursively defined differential operators while the second form shares a similar solution structure except that the differential operators are no longer recursively defined. Instead of using differential operators, the third form is expressed by Schur polynomials.

Study of Dynamical Chiral Symmetry Breaking in (2 + 1) Dimensional Abelian Higgs Model

In this paper, we study the dynamical mass generation in the Abelian Higgs model in 2 + 1 dimensions. Instead of adopting the approximations in [Jiang H et al., J. Phys. A 41 2008 255402.], we numerically solve the coupled Dyson-Schwinger Equations (DSEs) for the fermion and gauge boson propagators using a specific truncation for the fermion-photon vertex ansatz and compare our results with the corresponding ones in the above mentioned paper. more » ... r remain qualitatively unaffected by refining the truncation scheme of the DSEs, although there exist large quantitative differences between the results presented in the above paper and ours. Interweaving Industrial Ecology and Ecological Modernization: A Comparative Bibliometric Analysis

Although industrial activity has brought about rapid economic growth, it also faces the dual challenges of resource constraints and environmental pressure. Industrial ecology (IE) and ecological modernization (EM) are two theories regarding the conceptualization and implementation of sustainable development that emerged from the natural and social sciences, respectively. Over the past three decades, scholars have conducted copious amounts of theoretical and applied research on IE and EM, but
more » ... parative studies from an interdisciplinary perspective on the relationship between the two remain relatively rare. On the basis of a bibliometric analysis, this study offers a comprehensive examination of the background, theoretical connotations, and main content of IE and EM, also exploring the role of both theoretical perspectives in the promotion of sustainable industrial development. The findings are fourfold: (1) the research on IE and EM has been increasing year by year, particularly in the past decade; (2) the research is mostly concentrated in developed countries such as the United States and European Union member nations, and contributions from China have increased significantly in recent years; (3) IE has a broader research community than EM and has evolved clearer and more specific research contents and methods; and (4) IE, which analyzes the problems of specific industrial systems, and EM, which constitutes a higher-level institutional policy design, exhibit a trend of cross-fertilization. This study provides a reference for building a more systematic and comprehensive theoretical system of ecological transformation and discusses the future research directions in this field.

A halo tester is designed to analyze the halo formation in low-light-level (LLL) image intensifiers and the influencing factors on halo size. The tester is used to collect a 0.1922-mm hole image directly using a CoolSNAPK4 charge-coupled device (CCD) in a darkroom under illumination conditions between 10 −2 and 10 −4 lx. Combinatorial Causal Bandits [article]

In combinatorial causal bandits (CCB), the learning agent chooses at most K variables in each round to intervene, collects feedback from the observed variables, with the goal of minimizing expected regret on the target variable Y. Different from all prior studies on causal bandits, CCB needs to deal with exponentially large action space. We study under the context of binary generalized linear models (BGLMs) with a succinct parametric representation of the causal models. We present the algorithm
more » ... BGLM-OFU for Markovian BGLMs (i.e. no hidden variables) based on the maximum likelihood estimation method, and show that it achieves O(√(T)log T) regret, where T is the time horizon. For the special case of linear models with hidden variables, we apply causal inference techniques such as the do-calculus to convert the original model into a Markovian model, and then show that our BGLM-OFU algorithm and another algorithm based on the linear regression both solve such linear models with hidden variables. Our novelty includes (a) considering the combinatorial intervention action space, (b) considering general causal models including ones with hidden variables, (c) integrating and adapting techniques from diverse studies such as generalized linear bandits and online influence maximization, and (d) not relying on unrealistic assumptions such as knowing the joint distribution of the parents of Y under all interventions used in some prior studies.
