observed similarities in the fracture pattern of the axis vertebra and that in hanged men described by Wood Jones on specimen of criminals. Since then, more than 200 articles, textbooks, and podium presentations worked up this interesting fracture entity [5] . We therefore read the well-structured review [7] concerning management of hangman's fractures (Hmfx) and traumatic spondylolisthesis (TS C2-3 ), with great interest. Optical Realization of Quantum Gambling Machine [article]

2000 arXiv   pre-print
Quantum gambling --- a secure remote two-party protocol which has no classical counterpart --- is demonstrated through optical approach. A photon is prepared by Alice in a superposition state of two potential paths. Then one path leads to Bob and is split into two parts. The security is confirmed by quantum interference between Alice's path and one part of Bob's path. It is shown that a practical quantum gambling machine can be feasible by this way.

Variation Trends of Fractal Dimension in Epileptic EEG Signals

Zhiwei Li, Jun Li, Yousheng Xia, Pingfa Feng, Feng Feng
2021 Algorithms
Epileptic diseases take EEG as an important basis for clinical judgment, and fractal algorithms were often used to analyze electroencephalography (EEG) signals. However, the variation trends of fractal dimension (D) were opposite in the literature, i.e., both D decreasing and increasing were reported in previous studies during seizure status relative to the normal status, undermining the feasibility of fractal algorithms for EEG analysis to detect epileptic seizures. In this study, two
more » ... s with high accuracy in the D calculation, Higuchi and roughness scaling extraction (RSE), were used to study D variation of EEG signals with seizures. It was found that the denoising operation had an important influence on D variation trend. Moreover, the D variation obtained by RSE algorithm was larger than that by Higuchi algorithm, because the non-fractal nature of EEG signals during normal status could be detected and quantified by RSE algorithm. The above findings in this study could be promising to make more understandings of the nonlinear nature and scaling behaviors of EEG signals.

Synthesis and Pore Structure of Mesozeolite FAU

FENG Chun-Feng, MA Li, MA Jing-Hong, LI Rui-Feng
2014 Journal of Inorganic Materials
Mesoporous zeolites X and Y with FAU structure were hydrothermally synthesized using an organosilane surfactant (TPOAC) as mesopore-generating agent, which was added into the conventional synthesis system of the crystalline microporous aluminosilicates. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, high-resolution transmission electron microscope, N 2 adsorption-desorption isotherms and thermogravimetric analysis were used to characterize their structural and textural features. The results

Both mesoporous zeolite X and Y displayed not only inherent topological and microporous structure of zeolite FAU, but also different morphology from conventional zeolite FAU crystals.

Dissecting dysfunctional crosstalk pathways regulated by miRNAs during glioma progression

Yunpeng Zhang, Yanjun Xu, Feng Li, Xiang Li, Li Feng, Xinrui Shi, Lihua Wang, Xia Li
2016 OncoTarget
Glioma is a malignant nervous system tumor with a high fatality rate and poor prognosis. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are important post-transcriptional modulators of glioma initiation and progression. Tumor progression often results from dysfunctional co-operation between pathways regulated by miRNAs. We therefore constructed a glioma progression-related miRNA-pathway crosstalk network that not only revealed some key miRNA-pathway patterns, but also helped characterize the functional roles of miRNAs
more » ... ng glioma progression. Our data indicate that crosstalk between cell cycle and p53 pathways is associated with grade II to grade III progression, while cell communications-related pathways involving regulation of actin cytoskeleton and adherens junctions are associated with grade IV glioblastoma progression. Furthermore, miRNAs and their crosstalk pathways may be useful for stratifying glioma and glioblastoma patients into groups with short or long survival times. Our data indicate that a combination of miRNA and pathway crosstalk information can be used for survival prediction.

Gene Transfection of Bioactive Glass Fibers

LIU Hui, CHEN Xiao-Feng, LI Xian, LI Yu-Li, LIN Ze-Feng
2014 Journal of Inorganic Materials
Bioactive glasses (BGs) exhibit potential applications for gene transfection because of their composition including Ca and P. Here, bioactive glass fibers (BGFs) with mesopores or hierarchical nanopores, were prepared by electrospinning process using BGs Sol-Gel precursor and its effect on mediating gene transfection was investigated. The results indicate that BGF acts as a gene vector by releasing Ca 2+ and PO 4 3-, and then reunioning them along with plasmid DNA in Dulbecco's Modified Eagle's
more » ... Medium (DMEM). BGFs have a dose-dependent manner in transfection efficiency. When using 1 μg/mL plasmid, the transfection efficiency of BGF with concentration at 1000 μg/mL is higher than 50% of lipofectamine LTX_PLUS. The transfection mechanism of BGF is similar to that of calcium phosphate (CaP) system. Furthermore, BGF's sufficient ions releasing ensures stability and effectiveness to be applied in gene transfection, which makes BGF a promising candidate for gene delivery in replace of traditional gene carrier, the nano-calcium phosphate system.

2011 Nature Communications
multi-partite entangled states are important for developing studies of quantum networking and quantum computation. To date, the largest number of particles that have been successfully manipulated is 14 trapped ions. Yet in quantum information science, photons have particular advantages over other systems. In particular, they are more easily transportable qubits and are more robust against decoherence. Thus far, the largest number of photons to have been successfully manipulated in an experiment
more » ... is six. Here we demonstrate, for the first time, an eight-photon Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state with a measured fidelity of 0.59 ± 0.02, which proved the presence of genuine eight-partite entanglement. This is achieved by improving the photon detection efficiency to 25% with a 300-mW pump laser. With this state, we also demonstrate an eight-party quantum communication complexity scenario. This eight-photon entangled-state source may be useful in one-way quantum computation, quantum networks and other quantum information processing tasks.
