Complementarity in a macroscopic observation [article]

Complementarity is usually considered as a phenomenon of microscopic systems. In this paper we report an experimental observation of complementarity in the correlated double-slit interference with a pseudothermal light source. The thermal light beam is divided into test and reference beams which are correlated with each other. The double-slit is set in the test arm, and the interference pattern can be observed in the intensity correlation between the two arms. The experimental results show that
more &raquo; ... the disappearance of interference fringe depends on whether which-path information is gained through the reference arm. The experiment therefore witnesses the complementarity occurring in a macroscopic system.

WikiKG90M in KDD Cup 2021 is a large encyclopedic knowledge graph, which could benefit various downstream applications such as question answering and recommender systems. Participants are invited to complete the knowledge graph by predicting missing triplets. Recent representation learning methods have achieved great success on standard datasets like FB15k-237. Thus, we train the advanced algorithms in different domains to learn the triplets, including OTE, QuatE, RotatE and TransE.
more &raquo; ... y, we modified OTE into NOTE (short for Norm-OTE) for better performance. Besides, we use both the DeepWalk and the post-smoothing technique to capture the graph structure for supplementation. In addition to the representations, we also use various statistical probabilities among the head entities, the relations and the tail entities for the final prediction. Experimental results show that the ensemble of state-of-the-art representation learning methods could draw on each others strengths. And we develop feature engineering from validation candidates for further improvements. Please note that we apply the same strategy on the test set for final inference. And these features may not be practical in the real world when considering ranking against all the entities.

InGaN self-assembled nanostructures have been prepared by growth interruption during metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) growth. With a 12 s growth interruption, we successfully formed InGaN nanostructures with a typical lateral size of 25 nm and an average height of 4.1 nm. The nanostructure density was approximately 2 Â 10 10 cm À2 . In contrast, much larger InGaN nanostructures were obtained without growth interruption. Thioredoxin-interacting protein mediates NALP3 inflammasome activation in podocytes during diabetic nephropathy

Numerous studies have shown that the NALP3 inflammasome plays an important role in various immune and inflammatory diseases. However, whether the NALP3 inflammasome is involved in the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy (DN) is unclear. In our study, we confirmed that high glucose (HG) concentrations induced NALP3 inflammasome activation both in vivo and in vitro. Blocking NALP3 inflammasome activation by NALP3/ASC shRNA and caspase-1 inhibition prevented IL-1β production and eventually

We also found that thioredoxin (TRX)-interacting protein (TXNIP), which is a prooxidative stress and pro-inflammatory factor, activated NALP3 inflammasome by interacting with NALP3 in HG-exposed podocytes. Knocking down TXNIP impeded NALP3 inflammasome activation and alleviated podocyte injury caused by HG. In summary, the NALP3 inflammasome mediates podocyte and glomerular injury in DN, moreover, TXNIP participates in the formation and activation of the NALP3 inflammasome in podocytes during DN, which represents a novel mechanism of podocyte and glomerular injury under diabetic conditions.

Antitumor activities of dFv-LDP-AE: An enediyne-energized fusion protein targeting tumor-associated antigen gelatinases

Gelatinases play an important role in tumor growth and metastasis, and overexpression of these molecules is strongly correlated with poor prognosis in a variety of malignant tumors. Lidamycin is an enediyne antitumor antibiotic with potent cytotoxicity. We previously reported that a tandem scFv format (dFv-LDP-AE) showed enhanced binding ability with gelatinases compared with the scFv-lidamycin conjugate (Fv-LDP-AE). In this study, the antitumor activities of dFv-LDP-AE on hepatocellular
more &raquo; ... ma (HCC) were evaluated in vitro and in vivo. By SDS-PAGE analysis, it was found that partial fusion protein dFv-LDP existed as dimer; the results of ELISA and immunofluorescence demonstrated that the fusion protein dFv-LDP could efficiently bind to hepatoma cells in vitro. The apparent arrest of cell cycle at G2/M phase and induction of apoptosis at nanomole levels indicated that the dFv-LDP-AE was very potent against HCC. In in vivo experiments, dFv-LDP-AE shown enhanced cytotoxic effects compared to those of LDM. Administration at mouse tolerable dosage level, the inhibition rate of tumor growth was 89.5% of dFv-LDP-AE vs. 73.6% of LDM on transplantable H22 in mice (P<0.05) and, 87.3% of dFv-LDP-AE vs. 63.4% of LDM on hepatoma Bel-7402 in athymic mice (P<0.01). Small animal optical imaging showed that the FITC-labeled dFv-LDP preferentially localized in the tumor site in less than 30 min, which demonstrated remarkable tumor-targeting properties. As a kind of refractory glaucoma, the neovascular glaucoma causes severe pain and is extremely destructive with very high rate of blindness. A more appropriate treatment coming with the individual situation of patients' visual acuity may help keep the remaining vision at the greatest extent, relieve the pain. Based on the literatures published at home and abroad during recent years, this paper gives a brief review on the advances in treatment of neovascular glaucoma.

Circulating noncoding RNAs as early predictive biomarkers in preeclampsia: a diagnostic meta-analysis

Background We designed a meta-analysis to evaluate the clinical significance and efficacy of circulating noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) in the early prediction of preeclampsia. Methods PubMed, Embase and the Cochrane Library were used to search for literature. The combined prediction performance was evaluated by calculating the area under the summary receiver operator characteristic (SROC) curve. The potential sources of heterogeneity were analysed by meta-regression analysis and subgroup analysis.
more &raquo; ... statistical analyses and mapping were performed by RevMan 5.3 and Stata 12.0. Results A total of 41 studies from 14 articles, including 557 preeclampsia patients and 842 controls, were included in our meta-analysis. All studies collected blood before onset. NcRNAs in blood performed relatively well in predicting preeclampsia. The combined sensitivity was 0.71, the specificity was 0.84, and the area under the SROC curve (AUC) was 0.86. Peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) samples showed the best diagnostic accuracy. The combined AUC was 0.93. Combined detection was better than single detection, and miRNA was better than circRNA. The heterogeneity of the study was determined by sample size, lncRNA characteristics, lncRNA source and race. Conclusion Circulating ncRNAs can be valuable biomarkers used as candidates for noninvasive early predictive biomarkers of preeclampsia and have great clinical application prospects. The clinical value of ncRNAs needs to be tested by further multicentre, comprehensive and prospective studies, and the test criteria should be established.

A randomized controlled clinical trial of vildagliptin plus metformin combination therapy in patients with type II diabetes mellitus

The aim of the present study was to assess the efficacy and safety of vildagliptin plus metformin combination therapy in patients with type II diabetes mellitus. Type II diabetic patients with poor glycemic control following at least three months of metformin treatment were selected and randomized into two groups. FBG, PPG and HbA1c levels of the patients in the vildagliptin group significantly decreased following the trial, whereas no statistically significant differences were observed in the various indicators of the placebo group prior to and following the trial. The FBG, PPG and HbA1c levels in the vildagliptin group were significantly lower compared with the placebo group 24-weeks after the trial. Comparisons of body weight, blood lipid and hepatorenal function between the groups prior to and following the trial exhibited no statistically significant differences. Therefore, vildagliptin plus metformin combination therapy effectively reduced FBG, PPG and HbA1c levels in patients with no risk of weight gain or hepatorenal dysfunction.
