Safety Verification of Neural Network Controlled Systems [article]

In this paper, we propose a system-level approach for verifying the safety of neural network controlled systems, combining a continuous-time physical system with a discrete-time neural network based controller. We assume a generic model for the controller that can capture both simple and complex behaviours involving neural networks. Based on this model, we perform a reachability analysis that soundly approximates the reachable states of the overall system, allowing to achieve a formal proof of

To this end, we leverage both validated simulation to approximate the behaviour of the physical system and abstract interpretation to approximate the behaviour of the controller. We evaluate the applicability of our approach using a real-world use case. Moreover, we show that our approach can provide valuable information when the system cannot be proved totally safe.

In 1973, Neil Sloane published a very short paper introducing an intriguing problem: Pick a decimal integer n and multiply all its digits by each other. Repeat the process until a single digit Δ(n) is obtained. Δ(n) is called the multiplicative digital root of n or the target of n. The number of steps Ξ(n) needed to reach Δ(n), called the multiplicative persistence of n or the height of n is conjectured to always be at most 11. This paper proves that the conjecture holds for all odd target values: Namely that if Δ(n)∈{1,3,7,9}, then Ξ(n) ≤ 1 and that if Δ(n)=5, then Ξ(n) ≤ 5. Naturally, we overview the difficulties currently preventing us from extending the approach to (nonzero) even targets.

A classical model is used for the power consumption of cryptographic devices. It is based on the Hamming distance of the data handled with regard to an unknown but constant reference state. Once validated experimentally it allows an optimal attack to be derived called Correlation Power Analysis. It also explains the defects of former approaches such as Differential Power Analysis.

Health policy – why research it and how: health political science

The establishment of policy is key to the implementation of actions for health. We review the nature of policy and the definition and directions of health policy. In doing so, we explicitly cast a health political science gaze on setting parameters for researching policy change for health. A brief overview of core theories of the policy process for health promotion is presented, and illustrated with empirical evidence. The key arguments are that (a) policy is not an intervention, but drives
more &raquo; ... rvention development and implementation; (b) understanding policy processes and their pertinent theories is pivotal for the potential to influence policy change; (c) those theories and associated empirical work need to recognise the wicked, multi-level, and incremental nature of elements in the process; and, therefore, (d) the public health, health promotion, and education research toolbox should more explicitly embrace health political science insights. The rigorous application of insights from and theories of the policy process will enhance our understanding of not just how, but also why health policy is structured and implemented the way it is.

Predictors of Failed Pelvic Arterial Embolization for Severe Postpartum Hemorrhage

To estimate what factors are associated with a failed pelvic arterial embolization for postpartum hemorrhage and to attempt to estimate efficacy of pelvic arterial embolization in rare conditions. This was a retrospective cohort study including all consecutive women who underwent pelvic arterial embolization trial for postpartum hemorrhage between 1994 and 2007 at a tertiary care center. Pelvic arterial embolization failure was defined as the requirement for subsequent surgical procedure to
more &raquo; ... rol postpartum hemorrhage. Pelvic arterial embolization was attempted in 0.3% of deliveries by the same radiologist in 87% of cases. Failures occurred in 11 of 100 cases (11%) and in 4 of 17 cases (24%) of placenta accreta or percreta. The major complication rate after pelvic arterial embolization was low (3%). Fifty patients (50%) were transferred from nine other institutions. Pelvic arterial embolization was performed in 11 cases (11%) after a failed conservative surgical procedure and in eight cases (8%) for secondary postpartum hemorrhage, with success rates of 91% and 88%, respectively. Pelvic arterial embolization demonstrated a patency throughout one ligated pedicle in 9 of the 11 cases of failed conservative surgical procedure (82%). Twin pregnancy, chorioamnionitis, operative vaginal delivery, hospital-to-hospital transfer, nature of embolizing agent and arteries embolized, failed surgical procedure, secondary postpartum hemorrhage, cause of postpartum hemorrhage, and more than one pelvic arterial embolization were not found to be significantly associated with failed pelvic arterial embolization. The only factors significantly associated with failed pelvic arterial embolization were a higher rate of estimated blood loss (more than 1,500 mL) and more than 5 transfused red blood cell units. Attempted pelvic arterial embolization after a failed vessel ligation procedure and for a secondary postpartum hemorrhage is a good option with high success rates.

The current access to mobile services a user has, is defined by the user's mobile terminal as the single entry point to an operators network. This comes along with a set of limitations. Although performance and multimedia capabilities of mobile devices are constantly increasing, user-service interaction is still limited due to physical constraints imposed by the form factor. Another drawback is the varying ability of devices to download and execute new services. At the same time it is not
more &raquo; ... le to synchronise, exchange or share the user's data and media content among different devices. In order to overcome these limitations this paper presents the concept of the Distributed Communication Sphere and the according architectural framework that allows its management. This framework defines functional components to enable multi-device delivery of communication and media service sessions, user input interpretation, terminal management and resource discovery. It also provides flexible service delivery through the dynamic desktop component and relies on intelligent service enablers of the underlying service platform architecture, such as context-awareness, service provisioning and personal profile enablers.
