Frederick University seized the opportunity granted by the ECPU in June 2012 to introduce new programs of study using the distance learning mode of delivery. In June 2013, two programs of study were successfully evaluated and the University got permission to offer two distance learning programs starting in September 2013: 1) Masters in Business Administration (MBA DL) and 2) Masters in Curriculum and Instruction (Med DL). The current paper primarily presents the pedagogical framework developed by the ELC, which served as the backbone of the design of the above new programs of study, and furthermore, the manner in which various agents involved in this endeavour interacted in order to successfully accomplish the project of design and implement distance learning programs at Frederick University.

Optimal stopping for portfolio management

This thesis is concerned with the modelling and algorithmic development of a Stopping Rule Problem (SRP) in the area of Portfolio Management. More specifically, the objective is to provide an exit strategy for an invested portfolio containing one or more assets. The exit strategy aims to protect gains in addition to limiting losses. The thesis focuses on the investment/disinvestment in the portfolio and is not concerned with the composition of the portfolio. A new Finite Horizon SRP, referred
more » ... as the Portfolio Management Problem (PMP), has been proposed that allows future scenarios to be considered in the optimisation of the exit time. The PMP aims at maximizing the expected reward of a Portfolio Manager (PM) through an optimal policy. A Dynamic Programming approach is proposed and the DP algorithm developed is capable of solving real-life problems for short- and long-term trades. The applicability of the PMP is limited to cases where no constraints have been imposed by the PM. In view of adding more realism into the model, a Stop Loss and Target Return has been encapsulated in the formulation of the PMP model and thus, in the optimisation of the exit time. The impact of the model with enhanced managerial capabilities, is a better control of the maximum drawdown which restricts the risk of investment, influencing positively metrics of performance. An efficient tradeoff between computational time and size of problem solved has been developed. The final part of this thesis focuses on a PMP which takes into consideration in a dynamic way the new market information for the determination of the optimal policy for assets exhibiting Mean-reversion (MR). This has been achieved through the insertion of a MR Rule specifically developed for the PMP which quantifies future tendencies of the asset prices based on its varying average. An algorithm dealing with the further additional memory requirements has been developed, capable of solving problems of size identical to the original PMP.

more » ... and Delivery Problem (PDP) and its variants by an optimisation engine is the core capability required in making operational planning and decisions. For PDPs, it is required to determine minimum-cost routes to serve a number of requests, each associated with paired pickup and delivery points. A robust solution method for solving PDPs is crucial to the success of implementing decision support tools, which are integrated with Geographic Information System (GIS) and Fleet Telematics so that the flexibility, agility, visibility and transparency are fulfilled. If these tools are effectively implemented, competitive advantage can be gained in the area of cost leadership and service differentiation. In this research, variants of PDPs, which multiple depots or providers are considered, are investigated. These are so called Multi-depot Pickup and Delivery Problems (MDPDPs). To increase geographical coverage, continue growth and encourage horizontal collaboration, efficiently solving the MDPDPs is vital to operational planning and its total costs. This research deals with designing optimisation algorithms for solving a variety of real-world applications. Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) formulations of the MDPDPs are presented. Due to being NP-hard, the computational time for solving by exact methods becomes prohibitive. Several metaheuristics and hybrid metaheuristics are investigated in this thesis. The extensive computational experiments are carried out to demonstrate their speed, preciseness and robustness.
