Goldman flows on a nonorientable surface [article]

David B. Klein
2007 arXiv   pre-print
Given an embedded cylinder in an arbitrary surface, we give a gauge theoretic definition of the associated Goldman flow, which is a circle action on a dense open subset of the moduli space of equivalence  ...  Introduction We generalize the Goldman flow of L. Jeffrey and J.  ...  Goldman defines an associated R-action on Hom(π 1 (S), G)/G.  ...

David Porter, ed. - Vision on Fire: Emma Goldman on the Spanish Revolution, 2nd ed.; Robin Adèle Greeley, Surrealism and the Spanish Civil War

Sasha D. Pack
2007 Left history
David Porter has reedited an earlier collection of the writings and correspondence of the noted anarchist militant Emma Goldman, for whom the heady events of 1936 formed a kind of climax for a career dating  ...  For Goldman, Spain's predicament of civil war, urban and rural unrest, and its abundance of committed revolutionaries formed the ideal mise-en-scène for the revolution she long had theorized.  ...  Like Goldman, Porter refers routinely to unwieldy concepts such as oppression, liberation, capitalism, the masses, and the state, and at one point even posits the view-with which Goldman would surely have  ...

Goldman flows on the Jacobian

Lisa C. Jeffrey, David B. Klein
2009 Journal of Geometry and Physics
We show that the Goldman flows preserve the holomorphic structure on the moduli space of homomorphisms of the fundamental group of a Riemann surface into U(1), in other words the Jacobian.  ...  Goldman flows on the Jacobian The Goldman flow on the Jacobian is defined as follows.  ...  The U (1) Goldman flow Let G = U(1). The Goldman flow on M(G) is a periodic R-action {Ξ s } s∈R associated to a simple closed curve C.  ...

Entangled granular media [article]

Nick Gravish, Scott V. Franklin, David L. Hu, Daniel I. Goldman
2012 arXiv   pre-print
We study the geometrically induced cohesion of ensembles of granular "u-particles" which mechanically entangle through particle interpenetration. We vary the length-to-width ratio l/w of the u-particles and form them into free-standing vertical columns. In laboratory experiment we monitor the response of the columns to sinusoidal vibration (frequency f, peak acceleration Γ). Column collapse occurs in a characteristic time, τ, which follows the relation τ = f^-1(Δ / Γ). Δ resembles an activation
