A DANIEL COME TO JUDGMENT; ON BARKER AND WEAVER ON KENISTONS ON KRONHAUSENS ON SEX Somebody has invited me to be an eye- witness of a three-car pile-up: E. N. Barker and T. Approaches for modeling magnetic nanoparticle dynamics [article]

Daniel B. Reeves, John B. Weaver
<span title="2015-05-10">2015</span> <i > arXiv </i> &nbsp; <span class="release-stage" >pre-print</span>
Magnetic nanoparticles are useful biological probes as well as therapeutic agents. There have been several approaches used to model nanoparticle magnetization dynamics for both Brownian as well as N\'eel rotation. The magnetizations are often of interest and can be compared with experimental results. Here we summarize these approaches including the Stoner-Wohlfarth approach, and stochastic approaches including thermal fluctuations. Non-equilibrium related temperature effects can be described by
more &raquo; ... a distribution function approach (Fokker-Planck equation) or a stochastic differential equation (Langevin equation). Approximate models in several regimes can be derived from these general approaches to simplify implementation.

Introduction

<span title="2010-01-19">2010</span> <i title="Springer Nature"> <a target="_blank" rel="noopener" href="https://fatcat.wiki/container/jpch4hznzze4tgddvpbtaabkwq" style="color: black;">Review of Quantitative Finance and Accounting</a> </i> &nbsp;
In 1961, the first student to have Larry Fisher as his dissertation chair, graduated from the University of Chicago. In 1991, I graduated from Rutgers University with the (then unrealized) distinction of being the last student to have Larry as dissertation committee chair. As can be seen from Larry's vita, published at the end of this volume, over the years, Larry served on 30 dissertation committees. Although I will not assume to speak for all 30 of us, I have spoken with enough fellow
more &raquo; ... of his to know that my experience with Larry was typical. I could never have hoped for a better dissertation chair than Larry. His door was always open to me. No question was ever too trivial and time to answer was never pressing (unless we were speaking on the phone and our wives were waiting for us to finish!) We spent hours debugging Fortran programs with Larry examining the data as if it was an old friend. He read carefully various versions of my dissertation and made numerous suggestion detailed in the margins. When Larry died, it was a great loss for the finance profession and especially those of us that knew him well. We held a memorial symposium at Rutgers on October 17, 2008 to honor Larry's works and friendship. Many attended and many stories were told. One I will always remember encapsulates Larry's love of knowledge. It seems that at one point in his time at Chicago, Larry was not seen for a week. This was highly unusual for Larry. When he returned, his colleagues asked where he had been. His reply was that the latest edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica had just been published and he read through it. I don't know if the story is true, but knowing Larry, it just might be. This volume is an outgrowth of that memorial service. The pieces contained herein are all authored by students that had Larry serve on their dissertation committee. Gene Fama recorded a video that was played at the symposium in which he talked about Larry's contribution to finance. We transcribed that video and publish those comments in this volume. Marshall Blume presented a paper on endowment spending in which he argues that endowment spending rules and fund investment strategies need to be determined simultaneously. I presented a paper which Larry, Gwen Webb, and I had been working on

An Enlarged Profile of Uremic Solutes

<span title="2015-08-28">2015</span> <i title="Public Library of Science (PLoS)"> <a target="_blank" rel="noopener" href="https://fatcat.wiki/container/s3gm7274mfe6fcs7e3jterqlri" style="color: black;">PLoS ONE</a> </i> &nbsp;
Better knowledge of the uremic solutes that accumulate when the kidneys fail could lead to improved renal replacement therapy. This study employed the largest widely available metabolomic platform to identify such solutes. Plasma and plasma ultrafiltrate from 6 maintenance hemodialysis (HD) patients and 6 normal controls were first compared using a platform combining gas and liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry. Further studies compared plasma from 6 HD patients who had undergone total
more &raquo; ... olectomy and 9 with intact colons. We identified 120 solutes as uremic including 48 that had not been previously reported to accumulate in renal failure. Combination of the 48 newly identified solutes with those identified in previous reports yielded an extended list of more than 270 uremic solutes. Among the solutes identified as uremic in the current study, 9 were shown to be colonderived, including 6 not previously identified as such. Literature search revealed that many uremic phenyl and indole solutes, including most of those shown to be colon-derived, come from plant foods. Some of these compounds can be absorbed directly from plant foods and others are produced by colon microbial metabolism of plant polyphenols that escape digestion in the small intestine. A limitation of the metabolomic method was that it underestimated the elevation in concentration of uremic solutes which were measured using more quantitative assays.

Co-Occurrence of 35 Mycotoxins: A Seven-Year Survey of Corn Grain and Corn Silage in the United States

<span title="2021-07-23">2021</span> <i title="MDPI AG"> <a target="_blank" rel="noopener" href="https://fatcat.wiki/container/dg6crjwlojavhafr4a4zr3xi5y" style="color: black;">Toxins</a> </i> &nbsp;
Mycotoxins contaminate crops worldwide and play a role in animal health and performance. Multiple mycotoxins may co-occur which may increase the impact on the animal. To assess the multiple mycotoxin profile of corn (Zea mays), we conducted a 7-year survey of new crop corn grain and silage in the United States. A total of 711 grain and 1117 silage samples were collected between 2013 and 2019 and analyzed for the simultaneous presence of 35 mycotoxins using ultra-performance liquid
more &raquo; ... –tandem mass spectrometry. The measured mean number of mycotoxins per sample were 4.8 (grain) and 5.2 (silage), ranging from 0 to 13. Fusaric acid (FA) was most frequently detected in 78.1 and 93.8% of grains and silages, respectively, followed by deoxynivalenol (DON) in 75.7 and 88.2% of samples. Fumonisin B1 (FB1), fumonisin B2 and 15-acetyl-deoxynivalenol (15ADON) followed. The greatest (p < 0.05) co-occurrence was between FA and DON in 59.1% of grains and 82.7% of silages, followed by FA with FB1, DON with 15ADON, and FA with 15ADON. Although many samples had lower mycotoxin concentrations, 1.6% (grain) and 7.9% (silage) of tested samples had DON ≥ 5000 µg/kg. Fumonisins were detected ≥ 10,000 µg/kg in 9.6 and 3.9% of grain and silage samples, respectively. Concentrations in grain varied by year for eight mycotoxin groups (p < 0.05), while all 10 groups showed yearly variations in silage. Our survey suggest that multiple mycotoxins frequently co-occur in corn grain and silage in the Unites States, and some of the more prevalent mycotoxins are those that may not be routinely analyzed (i.e., FA and 15ADON). Assessment of multiple mycotoxins should be considered when developing management programs.
