CMS has worked aggressively to make use of multi-core architectures, routinely running 4- to 8-core production jobs in 2017. The primary impediment to efficiently scaling beyond 8 cores has been our ROOT-based output module, which has been necessarily single threaded. In this paper we explore the changes made to the CMS framework and our ROOT output module to overcome the previous scaling limits, using two new ROOT features: the TBufferMerger asynchronous file merger, and Implicit
more &raquo; ... g. We examine the architecture of the new parallel output module, the specific accommodations and modifications that were made to ensure compatibility with the CMS framework scheduler, and the performance characteristics of the new output module.

Biologically Inspired Radio Signal Feature Extraction with Sparse Denoising Autoencoders [article]

Automatic modulation classification (AMC) is an important task for modern communication systems; however, it is a challenging problem when signal features and precise models for generating each modulation may be unknown. We present a new biologically-inspired AMC method without the need for models or manually specified features --- thus removing the requirement for expert prior knowledge. We accomplish this task using regularized stacked sparse denoising autoencoders (SSDAs). Our method selects
more &raquo; ... efficient classification features directly from raw in-phase/quadrature (I/Q) radio signals in an unsupervised manner. These features are then used to construct higher-complexity abstract features which can be used for automatic modulation classification. We demonstrate this process using a dataset generated with a software defined radio, consisting of random input bits encoded in 100-sample segments of various common digital radio modulations. Our results show correct classification rates of > 99% at 7.5 dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and > 92% at 0 dB SNR in a 6-way classification test. Our experiments demonstrate a dramatically new and broadly applicable mechanism for performing AMC and related tasks without the need for expert-defined or modulation-specific signal information.

Synthetic Spectra via a Monadic and Comonadic Modality [article]

We extend Homotopy Type Theory with a novel modality that is simultaneously a monad and a comonad. Because this modality induces a non-trivial endomap on every type, it requires a more intricate judgemental structure than previous modal extensions of Homotopy Type Theory. We use this theory to develop an synthetic approach to spectra, where spectra are represented by certain types, and constructions on them by type structure: maps of spectra by ordinary functions, loop spaces by the identity

We augment the type theory with a pair of axioms, one which implies that the spectra are stable, and the other which relates synthetic spectra to the ordinary definition of spectra in type theory as Ω-spectra. Finally, we show that the type theory is sound and complete for an abstract categorical semantics, in terms of a category-with-families with a weak endomorphism whose functor on contexts is a bireflection, i.e. has a counit an a unit that are a section-retraction pair.

Dermographism in COVID-19

DESCRIPTION A 24-year-old man with a history of relapsing juvenile dermatomyositis inactive for 5 years presented with 1 week of anosmia, dysgeusia and pruritic rash. He also endorsed fatigue and myalgias but no fevers, cough or dyspnoea. His examination was notable for a diffuse maculopapular rash with occasional crusted papules on the proximal upper and lower extremities as well as abdominal linear, violaceous stria. more &raquo; ... ted areas of the skin. Interestingly, a well-established, 5-year-old tattoo on his arm developed spontaneous dermographia (figures 1 and 2). His labs were significant for a positive PCR swab for SARS-Cov-2, mildly elevated creatinine phosphokinase (CPK) to 961 units/L (normal: 0-340 units/L) and mildly elevated liver enzymes with aspartate transaminase (AST) of 84 international units/L (normal: 0-37) and alanine transaminase (ALT) of 72 international units/L (normal: 0-50); the remainder of his labs, including COVID-19 and myositis-related inflammatory markers, were normal. A complete blood count was also normal but an automated cell line differential did show a slight elevation in monocytes to 12.1% (normal 2.0%-10.0%) while lymphocytes showed normal absolute and relative percentages. The rheumatology and dermatology services evaluated for a possible dermatomyositis reactivation but the rash and dermographism were ultimately attributed to an exanthem caused by SARS-Cov-2 virus. His liver enzymes and CPK levels normalised over the next 24 hours, he demonstrated no further progression of his COVID-19 symptoms, and was discharged. He was prescribed fluocinonide 0.05% ointment and reported slow resolution of his dermographia over the next several weeks. At 6 weeks follow-up, the lesions over the sunprotected areas had resolved, but he had interval development of new photo-distributed erythematous poikiloderma with heliotrope, progressive fatigue and CPK re-elevation. He was subsequently confirmed with a dermatomyositis flair in rheumatology clinic and started on an immunosuppressive regimen; he remains well. Viral exanthems are a common manifestation associated with many viral illnesses. Unlike other beta-coronavirus infections which are not typically associated with dermatological manifestations, SARS-Cov-2 virus is frequently associated with cutaneous phenomena. 1 Case definitions and terms are not yet formalised at this early point in the pandemic which makes diagnostic description a challenge. Recently, classification schemes have been proposed for the cutaneous manifestations of COVID-19: pseudochilblain, vesicular, urticarial, maculopapular and livedo or necrosis. 1 We describe a unique urticarial manifestation of SARS-Cov-2 presenting with a mixed, diffuse urticarial and vesicular rash which included the dermographic outline of a well-established tattoo. AuraSense: Robot Collision Avoidance by Full Surface Proximity Detection [article]

Perceiving obstacles and avoiding collisions is fundamental to the safe operation of a robot system, particularly when the robot must operate in highly dynamic human environments. Proximity detection using on-robot sensors can be used to avoid or mitigate impending collisions. However, existing proximity sensing methods are orientation and placement dependent, resulting in blind spots even with large numbers of sensors. In this paper, we introduce the phenomenon of the Leaky Surface Wave (LSW),
more &raquo; ... a novel sensing modality, and present AuraSense, a proximity detection system using the LSW. AuraSense is the first system to realize no-dead-spot proximity sensing for robot arms. It requires only a single pair of piezoelectric transducers, and can easily be applied to off-the-shelf robots with minimal modifications. We further introduce a set of signal processing techniques and a lightweight neural network to address the unique challenges in using the LSW for proximity sensing. Finally, we demonstrate a prototype system consisting of a single piezoelectric element pair on a robot manipulator, which validates our design. We conducted several micro benchmark experiments and performed more than 2000 on-robot proximity detection trials with various potential robot arm materials, colliding objects, approach patterns, and robot movement patterns. AuraSense achieves 100% and 95.3% true positive proximity detection rates when the arm approaches static and mobile obstacles respectively, with a true negative rate over 99%, showing the real-world viability of this system.
