The aim of this review is to analyze the cardiorespiratory and tissue-protective effects of caffeine in animal models. Peer-reviewed literature published between 1975 and 2021 was retrieved from CAB Abstracts, PubMed, ISI Web of Knowledge, and Scopus. Extracted data were analyzed to address the mechanism of action of caffeine on cardiorespiratory parameters (heart rate and rhythm), vasopressor effects, and some indices of respiratory function; we close this review by discussing the existing

... te on the research carried out on the effects of caffeine on tissue protection. Adenosine acts through specific receptors and is a negative inotropic andchronotropic agent. Blockage of its cardiac receptors can cause tachycardia (with arrhythmogenic potential) due to the intense activity of β1 receptors. In terms of tissue protection, caffeine produces inhibition of hyperoxia-induced pulmonary inflammation by decreasing proinflammatory cytokine expression in animal models. The protection that caffeine provides to tissues is not limited to the CNS, as studies have demonstrated that it generates attenuation of inflammatory effects in pulmonary tissue, where it inhibits the effects of some pro-inflammatory cytokines and prevents functional and structural changes.

... l evaluation, echocardiography and blood tests were performed. Diuretic naïve patients received 40 mg of intravenous furosemide. Patients on an oupatient diuretic regimen received 2 times the ambulatory dose. The diuresis volume was assessed 6 h after the first loop diuretic administration, and a spot urinary sample was taken after 2 h. Insufficient diuretic response was defined as natriuresis <70 mEq/L or diuresis volume <600 ml.Results: From January 2020 to December 2021, 73 patients were included (59% males, median age 76 years). Of these, 21 patients (28.8%, 95%CI 18.4; 39.2) had an insufficient diuretic response. Diuresis volume was <600 ml in 13 patients (18.1%), and 12 patients (16.4%) had urinary sodium <70 mEq/L. These patients had lower systolic blood pressure, worse glomerular filtration rate, and higher aldosterone levels. Ambulatory furosemide dose was also higher. These patients required more frequently thiazides and inotropes during admission. Conclusion: The diagnostic algorithm based on diuresis and natriuresis was able to detect up to 29% of patients with insufficient diuretic response, who showed some characteristics of more advanced disease.

A new non-aggregative splicing isoform of human Tau is decreased in Alzheimer's disease

Tauopathies, including Alzheimer's disease (AD) and frontotemporal lobar degeneration with Tau pathology (FTLD-tau), are a group of neurodegenerative disorders characterized by Tau hyperphosphorylation. Post-translational modifications of Tau such as phosphorylation and truncation have been demonstrated to be an essential step in the molecular pathogenesis of these tauopathies. In this work, we demonstrate the existence of a new, human-specific truncated form of Tau generated by intron 12

... ion in human neuroblastoma cells and, to a higher extent, in human RNA brain samples, using qPCR and further confirming the results on a larger database of human RNA-seq samples. Diminished protein levels of this new Tau isoform are found by Westernblotting in Alzheimer's patients' brains (Braak I n = 3; Braak II n = 6, Braak III n = 3, Braak IV n = 1, and Braak V n = 10, Braak VI n = 8) with respect to non-demented control subjects (n = 9), suggesting that the lack of this truncated isoform may play an important role in the pathology. This new Tau isoform exhibits similar post-transcriptional modifications by phosphorylation and affinity for microtubule binding, but more interestingly, is less prone to aggregate than other Tau isoforms. Finally, we present evidence suggesting this new Tau isoform could be linked to the inhibition of GSK3β, which would mediate intron 12 retention by modulating the serine/arginine rich splicing factor 2 (SRSF2). Our results show the existence of an important new isoform of Tau and suggest that further research on this less aggregation-prone Tau may help to develop future therapies for Alzheimer's disease and other tauopathies.

Accurate coordinates for active beacons placed in the environment are required in Local Positioning Systems (LPS). These coordinates and the distances (or differences of distances) measured between the beacons and the mobile node to be localized are inputs to most trilateration algorithms. As a first approximation, such coordinates are obtained by means of manual measurements (a time-consuming and non-flexible method), or by using a calibration algorithm (i.e., automatic determination of beacon

... coordinates from ad hoc measurements). This paper presents a method to calibrate the beacons' positions in a LPS using a mobile receiver. The method has been developed for both, spherical and hyperbolic trilateration. The location of only three test points must be known a priori, while the position of the other test points can be unknown. Furthermore, the paper describes a procedure to estimate the optimal positions, or approximate areas in the coverage zone, where the test-points necessary to calibrate the ultrasonic LPS should be placed. Simulation and experimental results show the improvement achieved when these optimal test-points are used instead of randomly selected ones.

The past few decades has seen increased interest in the application of social robots to interventions for Autism Spectrum Disorder as behavioural coaches [4]. We consider that robots embedded in therapies could also provide quantitative diagnostic information by observing patient behaviours. The social nature of ASD symptoms means that, to achieve this, robots need to be able to recognize the internal states their human interaction partners are experiencing, e.g. states of confusion, engagement

... etc. Approaching this problem can be broken down into two questions: (1) what information, accessible to robots, can be used to recognize internal states, and (2) how can a system classify internal states such that it allows for sufficiently detailed diagnostic information? In this paper we discuss these two questions in depth and propose a novel, conceptor-based classifier. We report the initial results of this system in a proof-of-concept study and outline plans for future work.

Nanostructured TiO 2 and TiO 2 /W thin films were deposited on Corning glass substrates by RF and DC magnetron co-sputtering at room temperature, using three targets of TiO, Ti and W. After deposition, samples were subjected to an annealing treatment in air at 500 °C for 3 hrs. The effect of the annealing treatment and tungsten addition to the TiO 2 matrix were studied by Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Morphology and composition was studied with field emission scanning electron

... copy and optical characterization was made with UV-Vis spectroscopy. All the obtained samples presented an amorphous TiO 2 phase; however, after the annealing treatment, a crystallization process from amorphous to anatase phase occurred with gain sizes between 15.6 and 18.3 nm, additionally, a small amount of rutile was also observable. The SEM images corroborated the XRD behavior, besides it was possible to calculate the thickness of the films which was greater for the W-doped films owing the extra power of the sputtering growth, and after the samples had the thermal treatment the thickness decreased due to a more organized structure. Finally, the UV-vis transmittance analysis revealed that the transmittance is higher in heat-treated films as compared to those without any thermal treatment; also, the TiO 2 thin films showed a greater transmittance than the W doped TiO 2 films, reaching 91%. The lack of transmittance in the non-thermal-treated films made it impossible to compute the band gap of the films; nevertheless, for the thermal-treated films the band gap had a minimal change to the classic TiO 2 bang gap value, even for the W doped sample, providing them with the benefits of the tungsten within the same TiO 2 structure due to a great homogenization on the structure.

... From 129 patients were reported 17 patients (13.2%) with bacteremia. 35.3% were cataloged as a primary bacteremia. The source of secondary bacteremia was a ventilator associated pneumonia in 81.8%, central line-associated blood stream infection in 18.1% and urinary catheter infection in 9%. The patients with bacteremia, had a hospitalization stay of 23 days Vs. 20.5 days in the patients without bacteremia (p=0.19); 18 Vs. 13.5 days in the ICU (p=0.061); 15 Vs 11 days on IMV (p=0.053) and a maximum dose of norepinephrine of 0.28 Vs. 0.11 mcg/kg/min (p=0.02). We reported a 14.8% of mortality in patients with bacteremia vs. 12.7% in patients without bacteremia, odds ratio of 0.87 (p=0.75). Conclusion: Critically ill COVID-19 patients and bacteremia tend to increase the length of stay in the ICU and days on IMV with no change in mortality.
