Live Inspection of Spreadsheets [article]

2015 arXiv   pre-print
Existing approaches for detecting anomalies in spreadsheets can help to discover faults, but they are often applied too late in the spreadsheet lifecycle. By contrast, our approach detects anomalies immediately whenever users change their spreadsheets. This live inspection approach has been implemented as part of the Spreadsheet Inspection Framework, enabling the tool to visually report findings without disturbing the users' workflow. An advanced list representation allows users to keep track

EXP1 is required for organization of the intraerythrocytic malaria parasite vacuole [article]

2019 bioRxiv   pre-print
Intraerythrocytic malaria parasites reside within a parasitophorous vacuole membrane (PVM) that closely overlays the parasite plasma membrane (PPM) and constitutes the barrier between parasite and host compartments. The PVM is the site of several essential transport activities but the basis for organization of this membrane system is unknown. We utilized the second-generation promiscuous biotin ligase BioID2 fused to EXP2 or HSP101 to probe the content of the PVM, identifying known and novel
more » ... didate PVM proteins. Among the best represented hits were members of a group of single-pass integral membrane proteins that constitute a major component of the PVM proteome but whose function remains unclear. We investigated the function of EXP1, the longest known member of this group, by adapting a CRISPR/Cpf1 genome editing system to install the TetR-DOZI-aptamers system for conditional translational control. EXP1 knockdown was essential for intraerythrocytic development and accompanied by profound changes in vacuole ultrastructure, including increased separation of the PVM and PPM and formation of abnormal membrane structures in the enlarged vacuole lumen. While previous in vitro studies indicated EXP1 possesses glutathione S-transferase activity, a mutant version of EXP1 lacking a residue important for this activity in vitro still provides substantial rescue of endogenous exp1 knockdown in vivo. Intriguingly, while activity of the Plasmodium translocon of exported proteins was not impacted by depletion of EXP1, the distribution of the translocon pore-forming protein EXP2 was substantially altered. Collectively, our results reveal a novel PVM defect that indicates a critical role for EXP1 in maintaining proper PVM organization.

A Unified Neural Architecture for Instrumental Audio Tasks [article]

Steven Spratley, Daniel Beck, Trevor Cohn
2019 arXiv   pre-print
Within Music Information Retrieval (MIR), prominent tasks -- including pitch-tracking, source-separation, super-resolution, and synthesis -- typically call for specialised methods, despite their similarities. Conditional Generative Adversarial Networks (cGANs) have been shown to be highly versatile in learning general image-to-image translations, but have not yet been adapted across MIR. In this work, we present an end-to-end supervisable architecture to perform all aforementioned audio tasks,

In doing so, we demonstrate the potential of such flexible techniques to unify MIR tasks, promote efficient transfer learning, and converge research to the improvement of powerful, general methods. Finally, to the best of our knowledge, we present the first application of GANs to guided instrument synthesis.

Executive compensation in Germany

Daniel Beck, Gunther Friedl, Peter Schäfer
2020 Zeitschrift für Betriebswirtschaft
Understanding executive compensation and its effects helps design better organizations. Research on this area is thus of paramount importance. For large US companies, the ExecuComp database offers access to standardized and comprehensive executive compensation data. Hence, research on executive compensation has strongly focused on US companies. It is not clear that research results based on US data apply to other countries due to differences in corporate governance and culture. We have built up
more » ... a database that is similar to ExecuComp for Germany, which is by far the largest economy in Europe. This database includes companies from the two largest German stock indices DAX and MDAX. We make these data available for academic research. We describe the data and we provide important results to outline the opportunities that our database offers. We find that only some of the empirical results for US companies such as the association between company size and pay level generalize to German companies while others such as compensation structure and the vertical pay inequality provide opportunities for further investigation.

Graph-to-Sequence Learning using Gated Graph Neural Networks [article]

Daniel Beck, Gholamreza Haffari, Trevor Cohn
2018 arXiv   pre-print
Many NLP applications can be framed as a graph-to-sequence learning problem. Previous work proposing neural architectures on this setting obtained promising results compared to grammar-based approaches but still rely on linearisation heuristics and/or standard recurrent networks to achieve the best performance. In this work, we propose a new model that encodes the full structural information contained in the graph. Our architecture couples the recently proposed Gated Graph Neural Networks with

Experimental results show that our model outperforms strong baselines in generation from AMR graphs and syntax-based neural machine translation.
